Calling people "hillbillies" and "in-breds" is just as racist as any other name-calling.

Yeah, for some reason it's still acceptable to make fun of hillbillies and fat people. Which is why people like me and Phil Fulmer have to have thick skins. :( :D

On another note - wasn't Conredge Holloway the first black QB in SEC history. If he wasn't the first, he had to be one of the first.

I think you might be right.

The first black player to sign a football scholarship in the SEC was Tennessee's Lester McClain. I believe McClain played tight end and I believe the year was 1969.

The last two facts I'm not certain of, but I'm certain McClain was the fisrt black football player in the SEC.

Tennessee's been treating players equally ever since. Regardless of what rock they crawled from, hill they climbed off of, color, creed etc.

The real bigots are those who refer to 'hillbillies', and make fun of a man's size or appearance. Those are your real mindless morons.

Go Vols!!

Speaking of, how 'bout the sign at the Ole Miss game last year in the endzone: "Don't Feed Phil"?

That probably looked great on TV. I'm sure a lot of educated people are just dying to send their kids off to Oxford now.

Add first black basketball HC...Wade Houston. I believe Vandy had the first black basketball player, and we had the second. Also, we have a house full of black assistant coaches. Does anyone believe that Washington, Taylor et al would hang around in a predjudical environment? NOT

Whitey Cracker Here and I will NOT send my kids to a college that has "Rebel Man" as it's mascot. My son is getting some early mailers from OM as a baseball recruit. He ain't going there.

Oh, come on. Colonel Reb isn't a racist symbol. That's just heritage. And the rebel flags? HERITAGE, man.

What a load of crap. Wish they'd join the rest of us in the 21st century and realize the feelings that are invoked by the display of provocative and dehumanizing symbolism.

Case in point: I don't have a lot of German friends sporting Schwastica belt-buckles.

You ought to come down to GA where we still have people who are basing their vote entirely on who will support a ballot referendum to put the Stars and Bars back on the state flag.

I think for about 5% of them, it really is about heritage. As for the rest - they're the same people who got pissed when Hee-Haw was cancelled.

TV1 Lester was a Vol from 67-69. Walker was at UT from 69-71. I thought it was the opposite but those are the years listed at utsports.com.

I still think Reynolds, Kiner and Walker are the best trio of linebackers we've ever had. If Kiner'd just kept his mouth shut about the "mule". Well...at least we still got his kid!!

Last spam of the afternoon. The Miami Herald has denied having any story about UT recruiting violations per posts on another board. While we shoulda known this all along, my pucker factor has just eased up. Wheeew!

I read on the CBSSportsline Board several Ohio State fans are advancing this rumor to take focus off of their problems. A Michigan fan exposed them it was the same person on several boards.

My mother was friends with Lester when she went to UT. She was there from 66 to 70 I believe.

Albert Davis of Alcoa was signed along with Lester McClain... but Davis failed to qualify academically. McClain played on the '68, '69, and '70 teams.

Yep Lester was the 1st, got my names screwed up.
Funny thing is noone ever mentions UT broke the color barrier in the SEC.

So has anyone heard anymore on this "story"? It is spreading like wildfire on message boards, but there is no credible source that reports anything.

Doesn't seem to be any truth to it at all. Several people have claimed to have called the Miami Herald and were told there was no such story.

Nope, no story. We still have until September for more "bombs", though.

Expect this to be a bi-annual occurance. Once during recruiting season, and once during football season. It's gonna happen as long as UT and Alabama play each other, most likely. LOL

As long as we keep beating them, at least. But, hey, I'll take some unfounded allegations against us for a Bammer-whoopin' any old day.

Just FYI, I live in South FL. I don’t know a bout the Miami Herald doing a story, but a local Sports host on AM 790 in Miami has talked about this issue for the past week. Only he didn't mention Tennessee by name he did say that things were getting really ugly for some of the top prospects in the Miami area with schools coming from up north offering and doing anything for their services. I don't know where he is getting his info or how much truth there is to it but the story is out there in the local media in South FLA. It wouldn't surprise me if the Miami Herald does a story on this but doesn't mention UT or any other school by name since this radio station does have connections with the Herald.

FOR THE RECORD:

Concerning what I posted earlier about Canes fans calling us "RACISTS"

A VOL poster replied to the thread that Miami HS players could leave (paraphrasing) "Miami, and being around a bunch of Cubans".

Not sure if thats a racial statement or not, but I think that is where it came from.

That persons' statement about cubans may have been racist, but the term 'cuban' is not negative whereas 'hillbillies' and 'inbreds' are terms I would consider very negative.
