The Jarrett Guarantano debate thread...

Do you guys remember when Trooper Taylor said that a former walk-on RB (name might have been Yancey) was the best back we had and Fulmer and staff went plum looney? IIRC that was when we had Riggs and Houston.

So much for coach speak! We’ve heard that for years now!

If I were you and a few others here, I would pump your brakes a little, use your common sense and don't get your hopes up. This coach might know what he's talking about, but he very well might not and I don't want you guys ruining everything by buying into.... JG has improved some. You guys could ruin our whole season by believing that JG has improved... Some.

That's some pretty thick sarcasm right there, but I swear on everything orange in my house that some of you seem disappointed and even mad that someone says he's improved some. Why? Lol, cause that would mean y'all were wrong!!

You're not fooling anyone.

Pray he's able to have an awesome season. Maybe the line will give him more than 3 seconds. But last year he sure couldn't feel the pocket collapsing. Many times if he'd stepped up he could have avoided pressure and possibly made a play. I also felt he didn't move through progressions fast enough.

I thought he had a really good season for what he had to deal with..... he had no running game..... constantly in long yardage situations.....getting hit from all angles after 3 seconds In The pocket and was still one of the higher rated QBs in the SEC

Great article discussing JG improving a weakness... right up to the point where you threw the OL under the bus completely unnecessarily.

Man,
That OL is pure crap.

JG has got to be the toughest player on the team having to play behind that OL.

Snap, and DII defenses is in your face before you can set back.

If Guarantano has a break out season, Chris Weinke might get the moniker, "The Quarterback Whisperer."

excellent retort
I just like how alot of you guys will turn a positive article and spin it anyway negative possible. I realize JG needs to improve in some areas but for the most part the actual growth of this offense will almost soley rely on the offensive line. If that ubit can take the next step, JG will be one of the better QBs in the conference.

You trot out on the field and block for that QB and see how you perform.

Cuts as well one way as the other. It isn't easy blocking for a QB who can't do hot reads and takes all day to get the ball off. (Yes. I'm answering an untruthful exaggeration with an untruthful exaggeration)
So your saying that the O-line being absolute garage last year is an exaggeration.....haha alright then pal

Yeah. It is. They were actually better at pass pro than most of you give them credit for... and got somewhat better from a mental mistake standpoint over the season.

But... like I said, I was answering an exaggeration with an exaggeration. JG wasn't bad all of the time and neither was the OL. Both however had significant problems that must improve.

The standard time is 2.7 seconds to get it out not 3 or more doubt Bama OL gives 3+.

The OL did have break downs. There were a FEW plays where there was a jail break. Those improved. There were others where the OL's were just physically manhandled. Those improved but much less.

That said, JG made them look worse than they were because he was TOO SLOW getting the ball out and was not effective throwing quick, anticipation passes. ALL QB's are faced with pressure. Some deal with it well. He didn't.

But I guess to some of you... throwing the OL under the bus unreasonably is OK so long as all criticism is deflected from JG.

Unless he gets solid offensive line play in front of him, few of his improvements will matter. However, it is encouraging to see the specific feedback about where/how JG has gotten better. I am anxious to see tangible results this season.

Actually the positive article itself is spin...literally using data that is objective and not quantifiable to try and spin our QB into being "good"..or at least con fans into thinking so.

You're right about the o-line and I don't think anyone will disagree with that. But the o-line improving isn't going to make JG a world beater. We have seen enough of his play over the past two years to know he isn't the guy. He is now just a placeholder until some other QB can get developed. JG isn't bad in the sense that he loses games because of his play, he just doesn't win them. There is not enough offensive output to take control and win a lot of games. He is completing passes and not throwing picks but he isn't throwing touchdowns nor is he moving the team down the field consistently.
