The Lady Vols - Free Throws

Yep. Free-throws were the end-story of the game. Coach KJH should have the Lady’s at the free-throw line most of next practice. Gotta take advantage of all those fouls……
Free throw shooting is a critical aspect of the game. The LVs missed a great opportunity in this game. Had the LVs capitalized on more of their FTs in the third quarter, they possibly would have a lead going into the fourth quarter. Going forward, the LVs should set a goal of hitting at least 75% of their FTs.

That should have been a priority prior to the game starting. I honestly believe a mediocre team is all she will ever field. I hope I'm wrong

It was only a matter of time before it bit them. Weak teams and they pulled it out; nothing weak about Stanford. However, I believe free throws have to be pretty much “own time” any more. Rules regulating practice time, coaches, etc.
Players can go in the gym anytime they want to and shoot 1,000 free throws if they want to. They can also run sprints to get in better shape. The gym is always open if they eat to use it.

It's unacceptable--period. You take 29 FT shots and miss 13? You lose.

But poor shooting generally--Vols shot 30 percent tonight, and barely over 50 percent from the FT line--has been this program's
problem for years. And Key with 1 point?

When you recruit a team that can’t shoot you can’t really be surprised when they can’t shoot lol. This is going to remain an issue until we start recruiting people who can do the most important thing in basketball - actually put the ball in the basket.

In only her third season Kellie has managed to assemble the worst offensive team this program has ever seen. It's actually pretty impressive...

Totally agree (even with the inadvertent chuckle invoked by the last sentence above).

If players will take advantage of the facilities available to improve fundamentals such as FT on their own, practices can focus more on improving team offensive efficiency, ball movement, timing, ball security, passing, anticipation and recognition of teammates' tendencies, setting and using screens, pressing, trapping, in-bounds plays and defending, boxing out, tracking long rebounds, etc. Coaches can work on FT mechanics when necessary and can hold team accountable when putting players in pressure situations (Translation: team runs for misses...which also helps with conditioning).

Huge chunks of limited practice time should not have to be devoted to practicing free throws. Btw...I believe the tv announcers said that Stanford had only been shooting 58% from the line this year prior to our game.Their players delivered when it counted. That should motivate our ladies the way squeaking out a win despite poor shooting would not.

This has been a strange year. There are a lot of teams struggling at the line this year for both men and women. As you mentioned, Stanford has been just as bad as the Lady Vols on the year. The difference is Haley Jones is shooting over 80% and went 12 for 12 against the Lady Vols. Outside of Brink, who shoots worse than everyone but Dye from the line, Jones has shot the majority of their FTs. Rae and Marta were both good FT shooters last season and with them the percentage wouldn’t be nearly as bad because Rae is basically to the Lady Vols what Jones is to Stanford. Rae is an excellent FT shooter and shot 82% right behind Re last season and Marta in her limited sample was 75%.

I have always felt that the free throw percentage should be adjusted when you miss the front end of a one-and-one. You miss 1 you loss opportunity for 2. That stat would be dismal.

do you think not having your best offensive player might have something to do with that?
Hopefully Burrell will be back soon, but can someone explain to me why why plays Darby so much as she seems more of a liability than an advantage. She comments often about her 3 point shooting but when has she ever helped us in a critical game. She is slow on defense and can not close out and guard the three. Stanford has so many easy looks tonight. The last thing is the 6 point swing at the end of the 3 when hit or miss Stanford should never have allowed that 3 point shot, guard your girl please

inquiring minds! because i don't question coach kellie much but this darby thing has me perplexed. I'm not saying don't start her but bringing in Wynn and her defensive presence sooner couldn't hurt ... she would at least rebound and hustle

trouble is, free throws need just as much coaching as any other aspect of the game,,,,from the outside looking in can mechanics be trued much better,,,,crooked follow throughs,,,lack of a target focus, etc
