The Missing Element For UT: Joy.

Let's don't pretend that Uconn is going to roll over.

Pitt and Villanova didn't roll over either. They got their asses kicked by a team that wanted it more than they did. That team could still walk out on the court and beat UConn.

I understand that the full court, up tempo style may not be best suited for this team. I think that was one of the reasons Tennessee played so well early in Pearl tenure here. When you are playing possession to possession, you have so much more pressure put on you. You have to take a good shot. You can't afford to make a mistake. In those early years the players just played so much looser. They didn't have to think as much. They didn't have to worry about being pulled out of the game if they took a bad shot.

It really seems like that has changed.

If I'm Pearl, I'm selling the hell out of this concept.

Talked to a friend of mine today who works in the NBA. I mentioned my belief that UT has become the Denver Nuggets of college basketball, being drained and dragged down by off court issues. He reminded me how much fun Denver was obviously having as they ran to the Western Conference finals a couple of years ago. That's what the Vols have lost. The energy and esprit de corps that were hallmarks of Pearl's early years have been replaced by grim faces and a sense of impending doom around TBA. It doesn't have to be that way. This team can't do anything about Bruce Pearl's situation. Further, the 'AA isn't going to do anything that affects this season. It's time to get the fun back into UT basketball. Saturday in Hartford is a good starting point. The team needs to get back to the loose, joyous play they exhibited at Pitt. There's still plenty of time to make this a great season.
:salute:

I agree with hat's post, but I think the fans and team got their mojo back with the win over Vanderbilt. A win over UCONN would put icing on the cake and I guarantee Thompson Boiling Arena would be rocking for the LSU game IF that happens. UCONN is a very physical team that is going to be tough to beat. Hopefully, we play them with a big head, since they just won big games against Texas and Nova.

That's the thing, the kids aren't in the crosshairs. Nobody's about to jerk their scholarships or pull them out of this year's tournament. Be kids. Live in the moment. What's going to happen this summer is way too far off to concern yourself with right now. I guarantee this, playing with a sense of dread and slogging through the rest of the season certainly doesn't help Pearl's situation going forward.

Please, for the sake of everyone here, tone down the vitriol & the violent Rhetoric. did you not see the CNN guy apologize for using this term. & the great political genius Bill Mahar talk about us being such a violent country because we use gun/weapon related terms..please help heal our country and give up your 1st admendment rights ...................bTW , im being extremly sarcastic.

Agree. I was just wondering if it would be best if Bruce doesn't coach this Saturday at UConn? It will be interesting to see how the chemistry of the team works out. Well, anyway...keep Bruce, we need him!

A full court defensive philosophy is not best suited for this team. But an up tempo style by way of a rebound and an outlet pass suits us just fine. 4 out of 5 of our guys on the floor at any given time can handle and push the ball.

Obviously this style only works when the other team is missing their shots. But if we're D'ing up strong and forcing them into bad shots, we can push the tempo offensively and circumvent our lackluster halfcourt offense.

Dear Friends:

I hope this finds each of you doing well and preparing for the holiday season – hopefully with family and friends.

Let me begin by saying how much we appreciate your incredible support of the Vols in Atlanta this weekend at the Championship Game. Orange was everywhere and estimates are that the Tennessee contingent was 40,000 to 50,000 strong. Your presence was inspiring. While we fell short in our goal to bring home the Championship, hopefully our team's efforts were appreciated by all who follow the program.

I have spent a tremendous amount of time with this year's football team in both game settings and otherwise. I continue to be impressed by their character, heart, work ethic and esprit de corps. This is a great group of young men who have achieved more than many expected. They are worthy of your continued support, and I hope you will be there to provide that on Jan. 1 in Tampa. We should never take playing in a New Year's Day bowl on national television against a quality opponent for granted. Numerous programs in our league and across the nation would gladly trade places. Tickets are $65 and on sale now at University of Tennessee Athletics University of Tennessee or by calling the ticket office at (800) 332-VOLS . In addition, official travel packages are available at Home of the Tennessee Vols on Tour. We have several events planned during that weekend for Vol fans. A new event we hope will become a mainstay with alumni and fans will be a free Big Orange Pep Rally with Coach Fulmer, players, President Petersen, the UT band, cheerleaders and Smokey. The event is being planned for New Year's Eve afternoon. After the pep rally, I would invite you to join us to ring in 2008 at a special Big Orange New Year's event. All the details about the pep rally and New Year's event are being finalized and will be available at www.utalumni.utk.edu/bott. On game day we will have our traditional Big Orange Tailgate Tour with a full breakfast buffet at Raymond James Stadium from 8:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. You need to pre-register at www.utalumni.utk.edu/bott before Dec. 27 (Noon ET). Make plans to join us in Florida for New Year's. I know our team will appreciate your decision to do so.

A number of media outlets have written recently of my decision to give Coach Fulmer a one-year extension on his contract and to review his compensation. Phillip and his staff did an exceptional job keeping our team focused and working to improve during the latter half of the season as they won the Divisional Championship. We have now appeared in five Championship Games in 11 years, which is more than any other SEC program can claim. In addition, Coach Fulmer is one of only six coaches in America to have won 100 more games than he has lost and he remains the winningest active coach in America with 10 or more years of experience. He is our coach and will be our coach for the foreseeable future. A contract extension allows him to aggressively recruit the student-athletes that will allow the football program to hopefully bring home another National Championship for you – the greatest fans in America.

Thank you again for your tremendous support in Atlanta as well as the entire 2007 season. We hope to see you in Tampa on New Year's Day.

Go Vols!

If Pearl can take this team to the Final Four, it will absolutely save his job. At that point he would have the support to weather a year-long suspension.

Guys the NCAA committee hates Bruce Pearl. Their hate has been demonstrated with the horrible brackets they gave our team the past 3 years. He has a lot of enemies in the coaching fraternity, since he ratted out the Illinois coach. My point is we will probably make the tournament this year, due to a ridiculously hard strength of schedule, but don't expect us to get past the Sweet Sixteen, let alone win the first game. Many things will have to fall in place to make a Sweet Sixteen, Elight Eight run. For example, if Ohio didn't beat Georgetown last year, we probably would not have made it past the first round.

Also, if we make the tournament, I highly doubt Pearl will be let go, even if he faces a year suspension. Hamilton has already promised the recruits Pearl will be their coach. If we say bye bye to Chris Jones and Kevin Ware, all I have to say is good luck to UT's program for the forseeable future. Chris Jones may be the best point guard in the school's history, he is an outstanding player. I think a lot of people need to look into both Hamilton and Pearl promising the future recruits that Pearl will be coaching them. If they lie about this, it will look extremely bad in the media.
