The Mississippi State Postgame Report

CCM seems to have cut guys loose a bit...McRae, Moore, Reese and Richardson really come to mind. Think it's no coincidence over the last 5 games we're averaging about 72ppg, and against good competition.

This has also coincided with Goldens benching. He seems reluctant to push the pace to me. Serious question, do you still think the slow grind it out pace is better. Or do you think as they become more comfortable with the up tempo, that it will actually benefit us more? I feel like the problem is up tempo suits Jordy, Josh, and Moore. While the slower pace suits Golden, and Stokes.

And that's what I touched on previously...half the roster is better running, the other half better in a slower paced game.

In a perfect world...pick the ideal spots to run. One issue we've had with running is its effected us on D, we've had trouble getting back, can't let it effect your D. The other major issue is turnovers, we aren't good enough to give the other team the ball 15-20 times a game, <12 is a good number for us.

I think it's a fine line, run in spots with certain lineups, but don't let it effect your D. On the flip side, slow it down and take care of the ball with certain lineups, and when things need to be controlled. I thought we did a good job of walking that line the final 30 minutes or so, the first 10 minutes there were too many TOs.

Agree on all points. This is new to the guys though, I think with doing it more over time the TOs will improve. Getting back is also a matter of hustle to many times I see certain guys standing around instead of getting back. Golden works with what he has but man I really want a true PG.

Much better game from this team today. Very impressed by Armani Moore. Hustle and grit in doing the little stuff and being aggressive on the boards.
Aggressive on both ends. Liked it.

I wouldn't start Trae. We started off strong. Stick with it. Trae is on a little roll now. Don't mess it up.
And Moore. He's got a little ramar in him. Big, strong, better rebounder, strong on the drive with nervous handles, awkward shot.

Just make one turn into two and go from there. I personally wouldn't be disappointed to not see McBee or Hall on the floor. Seniors or not if you can't contribute then sit on the bench. Kenny just doesn't get it. CCM is giving both of them all the opportunities possible and if he doesn't realize it soon it will cost him more than it already has.

I just want Tre to be consistent. When he's on he's on and when he's not you have games like the UK one. This should be a confidence builder and hopefully we don't come out flat against Ole Miss. Good win Vols.

I confess that I also surfaced back and forth with the Syracuse -v- Louisville game. The KFC-Yum crowd had more spark than TBA.

went to the game today......moore looks really athletic on the court and looks a bit taller.....than 6 4. .....anyone else notice how much better we are handling the ball when we go with the 4 guard lineup.(woulda been a big part of what maymon brought to the table)....

right now i think it would be better for the team now and in the future to just bench hall and mcbee.
hall gives us nothing reese and richardson couldnt do in that position....and the only thing mcbee gives us is a good free throw shooter when trying to close out games.

1. I don't care who you play, it's always nice to get the first SEC win of the season and to break a four game losing streak. UT came out with a lot of energy and can take away a lot of positives from today's game.

2. I thought Trae played a very nice game and a really good comeback game. He got in the lane and really did a great job finding the open man. I think he earned himself his starting spot back tonight. Nine assists to only two turnovers and 50% shooting. You take all day every day.

3. Jarnell Stokes played well, but I thought there was actually an effort to get him involved today. He looked in the game from the first minute on and played with great effort. I thought his defense was fantastic. He affected around ten shots with his size and footwork today. He also was great on the glass.

4. UT's offense was good today and I really felt like they had a mindset to attack the paint. I know it seems like I say it all the time, but good things come when you attack the lane. UT got seven three pointers today and 42 points in the paint. They had the advantage and took it.

5. Bernard King Player of the Game: It's easy to go with Golden or Stokes, but I'm going to go with Armani Moore. He makes "impact" plays. He made a couple today. The block on Steele, who was not the same after the play. He made a great assist that got Jarnell an and-1 play. He got a big putback in the second half when the game was starting to get close. He also grabbed 11 boards...for a 6'4 guard! He had four assists, and even though he only had four points, how about three steals and zero turnovers? Armani earned his scholarship today. He played great.

6. If I was Martin, I would start Reese over Hall. I don't have any stats to prove my point, but Stokes played better when Reese was in (or any four guard lineup that CCM used) because Hall's lack of offensive awareness just kills Jarnell. He doesn't get the space he needs and Hall clogs the lane unnecessarily. Reese helps spreads the floor, and he works very hard on D, with his length and athleticism making up for his skinny frame.

7. UT did a much better job protecting the ball. In about the first eight minutes, they had five turnovers and only had six the rest of the way. Hopefully it's a turn for good.

8. I'm not the coach, but I hope Martin embraces the small ball lineup. No offense to Hall, but he just isn't serving much of a purpose for UT right now. I would played Edwards over Hall as a four (with Reese) and use Hall when UT is in foul trouble. The offense runs more efficiently and opens the floor for not only Stokes, but drivers such as Richardson and McRae.

9. The defense played better, although Mississippi State isn't much of a scoring team. But UT did a better job fighting through screens, and I honestly think Stokes' impact on D really helped. State stopped going into the lane and UT was more aggressive. I still think UT has to figure out to create more turnovers. It's like special teams in football. When you give up special teams plays (UT turns the ball over at an alarming clip) and don't do anything with special teams (don't create turnovers) you create an incredible disadvantage. Miss State had 13 TO's tonight, but that's four less than their average.

10. Nice win. Like I said, you take this one. UT has a huge, huge opportunity Thursday. I'm talking season changing opportunity. Ole Miss is a good team, and getting a road win would really mean something. It's not a must win, but if UT wants a chance at the tourney, they really need Thursday's game.

Go Vols! :hi:

If UT could get that type of production out of Golden every time they would be a much better team. Good job by him, great rebounding by Moore from the guard spot and way to dominate the paint Stokes. Too bad every game can't be this easy. This is still a flawed team with a very fragile state of mind. It goes as Golden goes.

I know it's bad timing to say this after a game in which he played well, but I have one complaint to make about Golden.

UT ran the pick and roll frequently in the second half with Stokes setting the screen and Golden handling the ball. On several occasions, Stokes rolled to the basket either alone or with his man a few steps behind him, yet not once did I see Golden find him. Bounce passes would have given Stokes open looks at the rim. While not easy exactly, these are passes that I expect my starting PG to make.

Loved the win though. The offense was much improved in general today. Hopefully we see just as much improvement in the next game.

Golden is not the answer at the point. CCM knows it, but he is the best option at this position until CCM brings someone in. I do like McCrae at the point because of his height.

Interesting note:
This seemed like an up tempo game.
Actually we made Miss State play our tempo which is 64.9 possessions per game.
We were able to hold M State to about 20 less points than the last 4 teams we've played where we played at their tempo which was about 70 possessions per game.
Whatever Martin has done to fix the offense, seemed to be working in this game.
Definitely a lot more effective ball movement.
Competition aside it was one of the most efficient games we've played in a long time.
Still too many TOs though.

I agree this team plays better without Hall and/or McBee. We'll see what kind of coconuts cuonzo has taking two seniors playing time away for the benefit of the team.

Don't totally agree with McBee losing all minutes. He's a calming influence on the floor when things start to get hectic. Thought McRae showed some maturity by letting the game come to him and not forcing things. That PG was all over him. They let him get away with a lot the first half

People want to argue for Mcbee saying his defense is good, which it is, but he brings nothing else to the table(Richardson, McRae, and Moore are better). No offense, drive and dish, or athleticism. I just don't see why he is playing.

Mcbee had 3 points, one defensive rebound, one asst and one steal and no turnovers. That not glowing stat line accounts for potentially an 9-12 point swing. He is a role player who is buying time and you hope he hits a couple. I think he had another decent look or two to Stokes that he didn't finish.
That's why he is playing. He played his role ok yesterday. We have enough chiefs out there with JR, jordan, reese, and stokes running around. Basketball requires you to have a couple of indians, and I'd still take Plays With Stache Mcbee over Kenny Chief Hall anyday.
If he doesn't play, I'm fine with it, but if he can have a positive affect on the game as a role player, he has done his job.

its his defense that drives me nuts. I know he's working as hard as anybody, but he gets broken down off the dribble almost at will. I really wonder what his +/- has been the past 2-3 weeks. It can't be pretty.

I doubt it has been good. I don't remember bad d yesterday. Its not like he is guarding the kid in the corner that's not moving. CM usually puts him on the guy running off all the picks. I ssume he would put other players in that position if he sucked so bad. I still think a bad blow by pissed people off so they aren't going to see anything positive after. Everybody gets blown by, but they usually aren't as ugly.
