The most obvious deficiency in UT

Can't argue the stats but under the circumstances these kids on defense did there best, no one goes out there to loose on purpose not a real competitor! I believe we need speed, speed and more speed on D! BUT a good coach/teacher what I mean anyone can get a bunch of 5 stars on a D and line them up! BUT when you can get kids in right positions, right coverages when you know you are lacking speed then my friends you have a coach. Wilcox and Kiffen both could have had better stats with these kids on D. This was coach Sals first year as a coordinator with not much of a coach, I believe the right hire can turn what we have in to some believers and that is all you need at this level, heart with a will and belief you can do it! I would say it is 30% athleticism, 20% a belief and 50% heart and will a good coach can get you that full 100% out the players a bad one will get you 5 - 7 with 9 - 3 talent!

I respectfully disagree. I am tired of our defensive players being left in the dust. TE's out run our DB's. The defense is slow. I would get an RB but spend a lot of time on LB's and DB's.

I dont think he was trying to say different but that cp explodes through the hole like the tn backs of old! I agree give travis stephens the ball with our oline and man what a season

Lane averaged 5.5 ypc.

Neal 4.5

I don't think RB is a problem. The wrong guy was starting

Furthermore, did it strike you that Neal (for all his speed) has Tauren Poole's top-heavy center of gravity? It seems that Lane would get low and just smash on for two or three tough extra yards after contact, and Neal would flip over like an inverted Weeble Wobble. I kept wondering (outside of spelling Lane) why Neal was being used as an RB as much, and not more as a receiver...

Thanks. EVERYONE knows we are weak in the secondary. Imagine, however; the difference in TOP and thus exposure of the D if you had a RB that could extend drives---and keep the D off the field. Hell, I know how slow the D backfield is---I also know how CP looked running the ball from the I. Like something we haven't seen for a while.

2 big plays per game is all, 2 big plays.
So you're saying Dooley was only two big plays per game from being considered the worst HC in Tn. history to being a pretty damn good coach after all. Hmmmm.....

If we are talking just in general, Im going with leadership, coaching and development. Ive seen waaaaay too many good prospects/players that have underachieved drastically in the past 10 years. Most of our secondary were highly recruited players out of HS. Marslalis Teague, Byron Moore, LaDarell McNeil, Justin Coleman, etc. Those are just a few RECENT underachievers. Look at Ben Martin from that awesome 2005 class...from OH..stole him away from OSU..5 star recruit. What did he ever accomplish at UT. Yeah, i know he was injured a lot, but he was never a factor. McCullers, Sentimore, Couch, Jacque Smith, Corey Miller...ALL HIGHLY TOUTED PROSPECTS WHO HAVE UNDERACHIEVED BECAUSE OF PISS POOR COACHING DEVELOPMENT!!! Bryce Brown..another blue chipper that did squat when he was here. How about David Oku..theres another prime example of poor development of a player!

I can go on and on and on, but Ill spare you all the heartache lol Im sick of seeing too many highly-touted prospects become irrelevant once they get here. Where is Drae Bowles?? He was one of our prized recruits last year! Jason Croom?

I think it was scheme more than the running back itself. We ran a fast-paced, pass-first offense. CP never ran it up the middle like Lane and Neal were asked to do. CP mostly ran sweeps. There's a difference there. Lane was very good at waiting on the hole, then exploding. He was also good at driving piles 2-3 yards after contact. RB was not an issue this year.

You have a point, but are also over-exaggerating.

Marsalis Teague was recruited as a WR, Bryce Brown battled a hip injury the one year he was here, Drae Bowles is a freshman who got redshirted because of all of our WR talent already here, Jason Croom is injured, and McNeil is just a freshman.

Jacques has struggled a little bit, but he got placed at OLB this year, so it was. New position for him. McCullers has done a great job this year plugging up the middle, which is what was expected of him. David Oku is a tough read. I don't know if he was an SEC RB. He's doing pretty well at Arkansas State, but it's Arkansas State. Oku couldn't beat out Tauren Poole, which is a relevant measuring stick for your argument.

Analysts have repeatedly commented on the lack of speed in the secondary, so that is unquestionably a major factor, one that can only be rectified on the recruiting front. I am reminded, however, of a comment that Frank Broyles often made, i.e. "paralysis by analysis." We knew that there would be growing pains associated with the transition to the 3-4 but nobody anticipated that they would be as monumental as those experienced by this year's defense. "Read and, then, ever so slowly react" has seemingly been the mantra of this defense, as opposed to pursue and tackle.

If you want to see what a Tennessee defense is supposed to look like, make the effort to track down footage of defenses from the late '60s and early 70s. Swarming, relentless gang tackling, to the tune of 5 or 6 orange jerseys around the ball, was the motto of those teams. Those boys were also opportunistic ball hawks.

To this day, Tennessee defenses from that era hold the following single-season NCAA records:

Most Yards on Interception Returns: 782 (on 25 interceptions), 1971.

Highest Average per Interception Return (minimum 15 returns): 31.3 (on 25 interceptions), 1971.

Most Interception Returns for Touchdowns: 7 (1971).

Most Opponents Turnovers: 57 (36 interceptions, 21 fumble recoveries): 1970.
