I don’t see his role as a PG expanding until after Chandler moves on. Bone had a lot of minutes to refine his skills as a PG. I think that Barnes keeps giving many minutes to JJJ/KJ/JS.
I do agree with this, he is facing the deepest backcourt(s) UT has probably ever had as competition. I think his current skillset would be better suited as a catch-and-shoot 2 guard for the next 2 seasons (at least for the bulk of his minutes), but over the long run, it would be better for he and UT if he were able to develop into a consistent PG.

I think our fanbase as a whole just needs to accept that Barnes' style of ball with how he's recruiting now we're unlikely to see Kevin Punter type of numbers from anyone.

Feel like 4-6 guys in that 10-14ppg range will be the norm.

I have a feeling if Springer’s injury doesn’t linger that he’ll be averaging in the high teens.

Yeah he's got the potential to do it, although he's only done it once so far and it was against the weakest team we've faced. So I'd say ya may also want to keep the tinted glasses off for him.

What we have in Santi is a 3-4 year workhorse that will do whatever Barnes needs him to do. James is the same way, ya need those guys if you ever expect your "1 and done" guys to reach their full potential in the one season ya have them.

Something that gets overlooked is that the 2 freshmen also have the highest turnover to assist ratio on the team among the guards.

Future is bright, I'm just trying to enjoy it as much as I can and hope it continues.

James, Olivier are 20, Santi is 19, Jaden, Keon, Walker are all just 18

Couple of my thoughts on that game, stayed away because this place got delusional real quick..

1. Really bad formula, no excuses, just saying a lot of things bad occurred in that game...Bama plays that 5 out and their 5 is quicker than Fulky, this was a problem, they routinely matched Jones in ISO against Fulk and took advantage more than we did on the other end. Normally in this scenario we’d go Pons at the 5, however he obviously was in foul trouble until late, at that point you saw how dominant he was that last 10 minutes and how much better our defense was, unfortunately the offense didn’t get better. Also, going small would be best not only with Pons out there but also Springer, obviously he was out with an injury, so now you’re down 2 of the better guys you’d want out there in that matchup.

2. If that wasn’t bad enough, Alabama then proceeds to shoot 20% over their season average from 3...for those of you who follow advanced metrics you know this is something that happens once or twice a year at least, a team gets hot “lucky” and makes more shots than they normally do. The silver lining is that this game occurred in January and not March, hopefully we don’t see that happen too much more.

3. On a similar note, a website called shot quality which is a legitimate trusted source by NBA and college teams maps outs shot quality etc...after this game their model showed that if both teams hit their average percentage based on shot quality that Tennessee wins the game by 8 points. Essentially, Bama shot better than expected from 3 and Tennessee shot worse than expected from all over the court.

4. Give Bama some credit, it’s not a style that is going to win you a ton of games consistently imo, but it’s a style that will win you some games you probably shouldn’t on paper. I’m betting they’ll finish around Top 5 in the league but have some WTF losses too, but again, credit to them as they hit the shots they needed to. Side note: I’m ready for John Petty to be gone.

5. I would have been curious to see Springer healthy, would he have gotten PG minutes and if so how would he have fared? Vescovi struggled (as he does against quick guards) but Keon was even worse, would Springer have been better or struggled too? My hunch is he wouldn’t have been great either, it’s games like that I really miss a Jordan Bone and can’t wait for Kennedy Chandler, we have either of those guys on roster and we win that game IMO.

6. Big picture, if Springer is fine and Tennessee learns some things from this game it’s not a big deal at all, they weren’t ever going to go 25-0. However if they don’t learn anything from this game and just stay status quo they will drop a couple more games along the way they probably shouldn’t.
On point #5, it really is a shame that Springer got hurt. As you said, Vescovi was exposed in this game by the type of player he is predisposed to being exposed by. His inexperience (and perhaps inability) in creating his own shot was on full display as he could do nothing going to the rim.

This is why I have been pushing for Springer to get time at the point because I feel he could have made a great difference in this game. He can get his own shot in the paint because he can drive with either hand, his strength, and his ability to stop and pop from 3-4 feet instead of forcing up a shot on the run. Springer just seems so much more instinctive as a scorer. Vescovi has none of those abilities, right now. I was honestly shocked to see him only credited with 1 TO.

Springer would have struggled a bit, as well, just due to general inexperience. He hasn't gotten much opportunity at PG and learning on the job as a freshman against Quinerly and Shakleford isn't ideal.

The Keon at PG project puzzles me. He is the worst ball-handler of all of our guards, yet it seems like there is some sort of push to make him the backup PG. I don't understand it.

@bleedingTNorange this place wasn’t that bad after the loss. Seemed reasonable to me.

I know you love Bailey but I wanted your thoughts to this. You may have missed it in the other thread

Definitely saw the overreaction about how this team is overhyped/overranked, how x player sucks, how Barnes can’t coach offense, how our defense was exposed etc etc.

As for your post...

Bailey is shooting a lot, but at the same time JJJ continued to pass up looks, so who’s that on? Should we take a shot clock violation? I bet a few of Bailey’s shots were with under 5-7 on the shot clock so good chance he thought he had to get a shot up. I would like to see JJJ be more aggressive but that just doesn’t appear to be in his DNA.

Bailey was 37% through 7 games, he went 0/5 against Bama, not sure I want to put much stock in a 1 game sample size versus a 7 game sample size...I’ll sit back and see how he shoots over the next couple games.

JJJ does a great job taking good shots, maybe too good of a job at that as I mentioned above, he should look to be a bit more aggressive...that just doesn’t appear to be him. If you take only great shots your percentages are going to be higher than when you sprinkle in some decent looks as Vescovi and Bailey have.

My guess is that was because Springer was out, I think they’d have gave Springer a chance before Keon...Bailey seems to primarily be a 2/3 at this point.

With Keon I don't know if he's actually got bad handles OR if he's just playing too fast. Like James last year looked uncomfortable, Keon doesn't but he also loses the handle a lot more often than Springer.

I'd say right now Bailey & Springer seem the most comfortable in that role as well as driving to the rim. Anyone got an update on Springer's injury?

agreed on JJJ

I actually think Bailey takes a lot of shots too early in the shot clock. Now I’ll agree before this last game he’s made a bunch of them but he isn’t taking many shots due to having to to beat the shot clock

It may be both, but you see him losing track of the ball just dribbling it up the court at normal-slow speeds, too. And he almost always dribbles away from his body.

It hasn't even been close, I don't think. Especially late and in blowouts, you see Keon running point with the 4 end of the bench guys out there with him.

Think it's more because Barnes is already comfortable with Springer running PG and wants to get Keon reps since it's early in the season?

Or do ya think Keon's quickness/speed being what it is has Barnes wanting to develop him into a PG?
