The Official “Regular Posters of the Basketball Forum” Thread

I know a little about acoustics and mixing, and I have a working theory on the perceived loudness of TBA vs other venues on TV broadcasts. That being said, I am certainly NOT familiar with the amount of microphones used in production or their locations, so this is just my speculation based on aural analysis. Unfortunately, anyone familiar with music/sound production can tell you that the finished recorded/broadcasted product can sound drastically different than the live performance, so idk if we can know for sure without someone from the actual production team chiming in. My best guess is that TBA sounds quieter than expected on TV due to the distance that the sound waves have to travel to get to the microphones. I think smaller venues with less air space effectively concentrate the sound waves and sound bigger on TV, even though the sounds are not truly as loud as TBA. In short, perhaps the fewer people in the crowd of smaller venues are just closer in proximity to the microphones than at TBA. That may not be entirely accurate, but I'm pretty sure the shear size of TBA is playing a significant hand in this.

I know how loud TBA can be (utterly deafening), and it seemed like that was the case yesterday, even over TV imo.
I thought the crowd was tame most of the game…kind of on cruise control. But by mid way of 2nd half you could sense the urgency and the crowd came alive. It got really loud. I did my part.

Observations from yesterday’s win over Bama after sleeping like a baby.

1. Having to sit through ESPN’s man crush on Alabama for 80% of the game only to see TN pull it out made for an extremely enjoyable ending and peaceful night of sleep.

2. Hearing Nate Oats say “we have to do a better job of knowing where their non-shooters are” in the second half has to be an all-time setup for the Mashack finish. I’m glad Oats had a front row seat to one of our “non-shooter’s” bouncing them from Knoxville and the 1 line in the NCAA tournament.

3. Mashack took this game over in the final minutes. Without his relentless D & FT’s, that final shot never happens. AL obviously wanted the ball in his hands at the end. They got what they wanted, they just didn’t know Mashack’s grit and determination had already written the ending.

4. Gainey played such a crucial role of keeping us in this game. Without him, we aren’t close enough for Shack to let his light shine.

5. This team isn’t the most athletic or filled with the best shooters, but might be the best “team” yet in the Barnes era. It’s also probably the best coaching job I’ve seen yet from Barnes. They have the it factor. It’s obvious they love each other, they play hard, and pick up each other’s slack.

It would be a shame for this team to not make a run in the NCAA tournament. Every fan knows with any team it just takes one off night, one night with a quick whistle, or one close game where the other team makes the final shot to bounce you……but this team is fun to watch and I will enjoy every second of whatever is left, especially with these seniors.

Go Vols!
I have seen several posts about the crew being pro-Bama and I clearly didn't get that. Vitale and Jimmy Dykes adore Barnes and are tight with him, Dykes called Cade Phillips a beautiful person from a great family, both talked about the culture here, Dykes' daughter as we know is a cheerleader for UT, etc. They talked about Mashack community work and character, and they praise Zeigler.

The fact that they talked positively about Bama when Bama plays well doesn't mean it was a Bama love fest. They should commend quality play. I'm not sure how you can say it was "80 percent " pro Bama. It seemed to me like 2 of them were silently rooting for UT.

I’ve learned some people are just weird with commentators and have a never ending victim complex about it.

I’ll never understand it.

It's absurd. I'm impressed someone broke down all commentary to determine 80 percent of it was pro-Bama. That had to take some time.

It's like the ref complainers. If both teams are playing physical they only notice their team's opponent being physical. They hear one positive comment about the other team, who by the way were winning most of the game, and it was a pro Alabama crew instantly.

Especially when the commentators have ZERO effect on what's going on in the game.
They do affect your subjective enjoyment of watching the game though. I understand complaining about it (at least sometimes).

That said, I think some folks are just wired to think that nothing is ever as good as the memories they have from when they were young. Makes them kinda miserable always comparing the here and now to some fantasy. Nothing you can say will convince them that the thing they remember wasn’t as perfect as they remember it 🤷‍♂️

Most complaints about the refs are being inconsistent. What’s not a first half foul becomes one in the second half or vice versa. Plus the exhausting end of game reviews.

However there are stats that all but prove certain refs have a clear bias calling games. And it’s a couple of under the radar names instead of the well known names like TV Teddy and Doug Shows.

I see your point, but not me. I couldn't tell you what was or wasn't said by commentators other than describing the in-game action as it happens. They have no effect on my enjoyment in watching a game.

So you never complained about Bill Walton and his blabbering or Gary Danielson being absolute garbage?

They’re mostly white noise for me as well, but a really good one can enhance the excitement (especially if you’re watching by yourself) and a particularly bad one can be distracting or annoying. Also every now and then one will say the most outlandish **** just because they need to be talking constantly. Whether I find that annoying or amusing depends on my mood.
