The Official #1 Tennessee @ Vandy SEC Tourney Semi-Final Game Thread (Sat. May 25 4:30PM EST SEC NETWORK)

Screw history man. History doesn’t play the game on the field. History says Tennessee basketball isn’t any good in March and we made the Elite 8 this year. History isn’t playing next weekend. If we lose, some will try to paint it as “should have lost in Hoover” but the two things aren’t linked. It’s pure coincidence.

Do you play to win the game or do you play to lose the game? Pretty sure you play to win the game and this team wants ALL the trophies. We aren’t here to lose. We’re here to win, dammit.

Which part of Tennessee baseball history do you think most fans remember (or care about):

1. 2022 team that won regular season and tournament titles but failed to make it to the World Series

2. 2023 team that won no sec titles but made it to the World Series.

We judge teams by history all the time, and there’s one metric that matters in our sport - and it’s not a tournament title.

I vote 1.

Well you can voice disapproval of any decision in any sport without diminishing the accomplishments of the team and putting down players/coaches. Professional sports are a little different imo though. That’s literally their job, they aren’t in school so I see them in a different lens. I’ll be the first to admit I don’t agree with every decision Tony makes but that’s why he makes the big bucks. He has proven people wrong time and time again, even myself. We are just fans, those coaches and players are the ones with the gifts from God that we all wished we had.
Well given NIL and the $$$ going to major D1 athletes necessarily makes them at the very least semi-professionals. Yes some players were being paid under the table for decades but not like the current (and growing levels). 18-19 year old millionaires are being created all over the country by virtue of NIL. I understand that baseball isn’t there yet but it certainly is in football and basketball.

More power to the athletes that can get that $$$ but many of them will be transferring multiple times to increase their “piece of the pie”. Strangely many aren’t going to make it at the next level.

Hopefully our offense shows up big tomorrow , we should have Loy , Behnke , Dallas , JJ , Kirby and Snead , not sure about Russell and Combs , I’m not sure they bring Russell back that quick

This is now a pro sport and these kids are making more money at UT than many of us see at our 9 to 5’s…
I would strongly just disagree with that statement even though I love you very much. My son will leave as the all-time leader and appearances and will owe $60-$70,000 to have played. I’m not complaining, but there are very few guys getting paid money to play there.

You aren’t playing a full time sport and being a full time student. I worked full time and went to college full time. I couldn’t imagine being a successful D1 athlete with that workload.
That has nothing to do with what I was trying to say…but ok…

Not seeing championship caliber strategy, process or methodical close outs in the Mississippi State or the Vandy games, they were wins, but the blown leads, walks, passed balls, and pitching failures won't work in the Super Regional or the College World Series, not sure where Amic's barrells have gone, but he hasn't had a hit in the SEC tournament.

These tournament games do matter, they set the intensity or lack thereof as you start the road to the College World Series.
And yet, here we are in the finals. Dang, I guess we're just that lucky.

I think the same logic applies to being the #1 overall seed. 😜

I’m moving on. I wasn’t trying to be confrontational or get anyone fired up. My apologies. I just have a hard time sticking up for those who haven’t posted in the baseball forum all year, and show up today to complain after all this team has accomplished.

My apologies to you @Caz. I should have stayed out of it.
My apologies as well Freak. My threads are never negative and was honestly trying to determine what an open forum was about when someone name calls another for their observations.
This team is awesome and has exceeded many expectations and we all want the same thing which is the ultimate national championship.
I appreciate your apology and hope you respect mine. Have a good evening and we’ll bring this home tomorrow

I was talking about athletes in general..not the baseball team…probably worded that wrong…but there are basketball and football players making big bucks…they are pros….

and I love you too my man! Upset I didn’t get to come say hi in Hoover!

I was just wondering, did anybody think we should’ve pulled Phillips?
Personally no but I was on pins and needles. He needed that experience. And we needed him to have that experience.

Not to mention it was win/lose with him today or use another arm for tomorrow and make that win that much less likely.

Luckily it worked out for the best.
