Does he not know that you don't piss off your opponent before you play the game?
It's better to say nothing at all & go play the game as best as you can & not be embarrassed afterwards after you've been pounded into the ground by the pissed off opponent...

You are correct, I even had a coach that would tell us to wish a sincere “good luck” to our opponent, coach said it will 100% mess with their head.
