I’m glad our team has an extra day off before the Belmont game. I think they all need a break (both mental and physical). As great as they have been overall this season, it’s still been a grind. They haven’t been as sharp as they were at the beginning of the season, but that’s not surprising, because it’s challenging to sustain the high level of play all season long. Have they already peaked? I’d be lying if I said the thought hadn’t crossed my mind. Coach V said several times that you want to be playing your best baseball in May and June. So far, in my opinion, they’ve scuffled a bit this month.
I’m glad the team as done well enough that Coach V has started “playoff mode” already with this home series and one road series left before Hoover. I think he’s managing the pitching staff well, especially Burns and Beam (to give them some rest).Honestly, I’m more concerned with our offense than our pitching. Jordan is in a bit of a slump, which I hope he breaks out of soon, and we had several guys strike out looking this afternoon. That’s troublesome moving forward. There have been inconsistent ABs from some in our lineup. I’m glad we have our depth in this regard. Hope that we get Jared back soon. The report from Coach V sounded encouraging. I’m also concerned for Evan behind the plate. He’s been quite the warrior all season, but I’m worried about him staying healthy through postseason. I hope that Charlie can help him with the catching duties as we move into postseason.
I realize that I’ve harped on a number of concerns above, but I’m also trying to look ahead into postseason as it rapidly approaches. It is comforting that we have so many veterans on our team that have postseason experience and leadership.
I don’t mind that we dropped to #2 in the RPI. We are still a top 8 national seed. Next weekend series at The Dude will be interesting. Curious to see how our team responds.
