The Official #19 Tennessee vs. South Carolina Game Thread, 9:00 PM ET, SEC Network

They're too inconsistent to have the floor as the Sweet 16. Hell, even when we were a 2 seed, we had a dog fight in the first round and an OT barn burner in the 2nd round. I hope we get hot in the tournament, but, so far, nothing suggests we will. I do think we can beat most anyone, but we are also a team who is a possible upset victim, too. I would not be surprised by a first round disappointment or an Elite 8 run.
I agree. A good low major or mid major hitting their threes could send us home in round one. To be fair you could say that about any team not named Baylor or Gonzaga. There will be lots of upsets.

Great win, hopefully we carry the momentum through the tournament. Keon having a nice bounce back game Saturday to spank the Wildcats would be fantastic.

I think the officials calling some questionable fouls on him got him outta the game, seemed like he was a bit frustrated. They hit Pons with a few questionable ones as well, but then let South Carolina tie him up a few times on jump balls that were fouls (imo). Still seeing Bailey and Fulky score was a great thing, and you could tell Santi is fine with distributing and hitting a few shots when the flow of the ball gets him open. I feel good know even without James we can still bury a team by 20 when things are clicking.

Victor Bailey came out with the flame thrower tonight! Hopefully he can keep the hot shooting up for the stretch run.
The problem with Bailey is in games where he struggles with scoring it gets in his head and he also plays poorly on D and with weak ball security / poor passing. Fulky has been struggling with his post scoring, but he doesn’t quit trying to play D and rebound.

Even those 2 as with #1 seeded Virginia a few years back

Yet his resume is better than some of those guy listed? That makes sense...guessing that has nothing to do with Barnes success against Cal and you wanting to omit that lol.

But if he keeps moving the goal post, he will most certainly be correct sooner or later. Right? Right???

Read my posts, I consider him a solid coach, just not “ great”. There are only a handful of “ great” coaches

And the best we have had in a long, long time. Let the man finish his contract and let’s just enjoy the ride. He is a really good coach. He is getting some recruits/talent we haven’t had in a while and building our brand.

This is just too much common sense for many to understand.

I think some have the grass is greener on the other side view. I have been guilty of this myself at times. The problem is sometimes the other side is a barren and seemingly unending wasteland. Barnes is above average as a coach and seems to be a good man as well. Could we do better? Perhaps. Should we take that chance? My answer would be, Why? We fired Fulmer because he got complacent without having a coherent plan to replace him. Was that grass greener? The other side of the fence for football has been horrible. Before all the yes but posters come back with their replies, THINK about the state of the basketball program prior to Barnes and the relatively lean history of our program.

I'm not sure what your definition of "lean" is, but OVERALL, we've been one of the most successful programs in the SEC. YES, some tough periods, but all-in-all, way better than nearly all the rest.

I don't know about best in a long time, but he is a good coach. Hopefully, he continues to be solid for the few more years he's here and improves upon his status and legacy as a Vol coach. Right now, there are about 4 UT coaches who have had comparable success at Tennessee as has Barnes, so more March success is key to Barnes' legacy in Knoxville.

Not meant to demean the basketball program, was speaking more as in relation to the past success of the football program. I started following the basketball program in the late 70's. Missed the Bernard King era but caught the Dale Ellis teams.

Name 4 UT coaches who have had similar success as Barnes

At UT? Easy. Pearl, Martin, Green and DeVoe. Barnes, as of now, has one co-SEC title and one Sweet 16 (plus a 2nd round exit). Pearl has more accomplishments, Martin has a Sweet 16, Green has a Sweet 16 and a conference title and DeVoe a Sweet 16 and conference tourney. Now, I don't think for a second Green and Martin are as good a coach as Barnes, but their accomplishments in the same time frames are roughly as good as Barnes at UT.

In 3 years Martin made 1 NCAAT, and never had a ranked Tennessee team...This will be 4 of Barnes 6 teams that have been ranked, and 3/5 NCAAT. Saying they’ve had similar success because both only made a S16 as their ceiling is awfully short sighted, you gonna say Frank Martin has had similar success to Chris Beard since both have made a F4 but never won it all?

What does a ranked team mean for anything? It's a March sport, about accomplishments, which can include conference titles. Barnes' accomplishments are a little better than Martin's in a similar time frame, but not much. They are the same, essentially as Green's and DeVoe's, less than Pearl's. Chris Beard has about the same number of accomplishments as does Frank Martin, but in a much shorter time frame. I expect this balance to change, as a result.

Barnes is a consistently good coach, not an elite coach. He hasn't done anything unprecedented at UT, but that doesn't mean I'm dissatisfied with his tenure. It does seem like he leaves one thinking he could've done a little better than he has, but I'm perfectly happy with him as coach, for sure. I just don't think we're experiencing a once in a lifetime coach who has done things never accomplished in Knoxville previously and we couldn't expect something similar in the future.

Now, of course, he's still got time and opportunity to do some more stuff. If he gets to the Final Four and such, all bets are off.

We were ranked #1 for a month. Not sure how that isn't "unprecedented".

It's also not particularly meaningful in terms of accomplishments. It was damn fun, for sure, but the real measure for teams are titles, post-season performance.

He is a “ good” coach
