The Official 2022 FIFA World Cup Thread

Two major things prevent me from taking soccer more seriously.

1) FIFA it's just so damn corrupt. Kickbacks for the higher ups ensure a stage that is repressive in every way. Major miss imo to have it in Qatar.

2) the dives......... They cry, whine and writhe around like toddlers who's toy was taken away way too often and it disrupts the play. They should put a rule in against driving and embellishment.

Just my two cents.....I really want to like it more.

1) guess you don’t watch a lot of sports then.

2) what would you have them do? Sit out a play after an ‘injury?’

I watch a lot of sports, FIFA is the single most corrupt sports organization on planet earth. There's plenty of receipts to back that up.

I'd give a yellow card for each infraction and possession to the opposing team.

It's not that difficult to enforce. It seems you've taken this very personally.

Haha, I think it would be difficult to enforce. Just as difficult as a football referee trying to penalize every time a defensive player gets a ‘cramp’ to stop an up-tempo offense.

The closest sport in regards to the issue of diving is hockey. Hockey has no issues enforcing it, in fact because they enforce it dives and embellishment are largely gone from the game.

The issue isn't just that it stops the game to gain advantage as in your example. It's that it's honestly an embarrassment, you're trying to sell an injury that didn't happen to draw a penalty against the opponent that can result in that players disqualification from the game or next game.

There are some really great reads out there on what they call ‘the dark arts of soccer.’ It adds a whole different understanding and appreciation of the game when you start picking up on them and can spot the little things they are.

The diving problem could be fixed pretty quickly. Blatant dives (e.g., diving when there wasn't even a foul committed) get yellows, and make an obvious dive in the box in an attempt to get a PK is a straight red. It is an attempt to fool the referee to get a great goal scoring chance that dramatically affects the outcome of the game, and should be treated as such. If they think that's a step too far, then have folks review fouls after games for dives and hand down suspensions.

The risk/reward for diving is all out of whack and needs to be brought into balance. If they aren't going to enforce rules against diving, it's virtually no risk and potentially huge reward.

In the past I thought they should review possible dives after the match and hand out punishment. Now, with VAR being so infallible, they could do it during the game.

Thats already a rule I do believe. But with some teams like Italy, or any third world country, you'll spend the majority of the game tossing yellows out, hence its not enforced strictly.

Yep. Confirmed when Russia got the WC. Doubly confirmed when Qatar got it.

Morocco holding their own against Croatia so far.
This game ending in a draw has really made the group pretty interesting going forward. Still have to think Belgium are clear favorites to win it, but could be almost a dead heat between the other three for the second qualification spot.
