The Official #4 Tennessee vs Alabama (SEC Tourney Game Thread) 2PM

Difference is 1 fielder is jumping over the runner (and doesn’t touch him) the other the fielder is off to the right and the runner hits him in the groin.

Hate the rule if you want, but if we lost to anyone because when trying to turn a double play and throwing to first the runner hit our guy in the nuts and the throw was offline, and we lost the game. The same ones of you so adamantly arguing this is a terrible call, would be screaming it was interference
If you watch the OM/Vandy video closely, the runner was actively trying to touch him. He did on the lower leg.

The difference, imo, is that, even though Ferg touched him, our guy would have beat the throw anyways. The OM player didn't even get the throw off bc of the slide/touch.

Neither should have been called, Vandy's wasn't at all, but since ours was, so should that one have been.

It's perfectly valid to feel this way, except we now have an almost carbon copy of the Ferguson slide that happened in the Ole Miss/ Vandy game which was ALSO in the bottom of the 9th and they didn't call it interference. The SEC doesn't even try to keep up the facade that there is Tuscaloosa favoritism in the conference. Either both slides are interference, or neither slide is. But, the SEC can't decide.
If this did indeed happen in the bottom of the 9th then the exact same play happened 2x in that game. I fell asleep before the 9th and saw an identical play around the 6th or 7th inning where Gonzalez was unable to get a throw off while trying to jump over a runner.

Edit: now that I saw the video, that’s the play that occurred in the middle 2/3 of the game not the 9th. I remember Baker making a hell of a snag and spin. Timing doesn’t change how the call should’ve been made, regardless.

it was the left hand, has nothing to do with the slide, he twists his body midslide and makes contact with the groin area of the Bama guy with his left hand. Looks like an unnatural movement in the usual slide.

I was pissed watching it, and am still pissed, but knowing the situation he was doing everything he could to break up the double play so we could win. I don’t blame him for it, I love watching our guys give their all. I would have been more pissed if he didn’t try to break it up.

However, I try to look at it from another angle, if the situation were reversed and another player did the same thing to us, would I want to see it called...
But the Vandy guy reaching TWICE with his hand is a natural sliding motion? Or starting your slide with your right hand straight up in the air, perpendicular to the ground and in the throwing lane/vision of the fielder?

My bad. I was asleep and my buddy texted me and said it was the 9th. Shouldn’t have blindly trusted him lol.

I will only say this. Having watched 3 games live since this game I have seen 5 guys who did not LEGALLY slide into second base but none have been called. If the crews are going to call it, call it consistently every game.
A guy near me today said unofficially they have removed umpire at second from rest of SEC championship. Just hearsay on my part, but he seems to be in the know. Said friend at SEC office said they had to protect him but did not agree with call and out of position to make that call. Doesn’t matter now and may help us so oh well.

His left arm was up to protect his head and face. Natural reaction and definitely unintentional.
