I think Mashack will be the X factor for us tonight. I think he has the ability to get into the paint and score or draw fouls. He has improved his free throw percentage. There will be times tonight where we are struggling and need a basket and he will show up. I really don’t think DK or JJJ will be effective on drives to the rim although it may open up shots on the perimeter for others. Tonight would be a great night to make some threes at s high rate but the numbers say we will not based off the three point percentage defense. Tonight might be a good night to listen to Bob and Burt because if watching you might be throwing things at the TV because of scoring droughts or the officiating. I’m anxious to see how Aidoo plays tonight.
Always a good recommendation to listen to Bob and Bert.

Tolu is going to be a handful. Need Aidoo, Awaka and maybe a freshman to step up!

Road games in the SEC are never easy and we have a couple tough ones this week. Hopefully the team that showed up though at Wisconsin and NC State shows up this week and we can win both of them.
I hope we can too but I like our chances better Saturday in Athens than I do tonight.

This is not a matchup that favors Knecht, but we sure do need him to have a nice game tonight if we want to win.

MSU is a big, physical defense and we’ve seen that Knecht tends to wilt when defenses get rough with him and take away his ability to drive to the basket and collapse on him in the paint. Tonight would be a great opportunity for him to grow.
I’ll be happy if Knecht has a game like he did Saturday and we score 90.

Me, too. But I can’t see us scoring 90 and I think that MSU is probably better equipped to slow down Aidoo in the paint. I doubt Aidoo is scoring 24 tonight.

It’s just my opinion that I think we’re going to need a better game from Knecht if we want to leave Starkville with a win, but you know what they say about opinions.

Ole Miss had a 7’5” & 7’0” player and led the SEC in blocks going into that game…

I think Miss State is a better defensive team, but I think their advantage comes from how well they guard the perimeter (or their numbers are inflated from the cupcake OOC schedule they played). We will see, road games are always tough.

And ZZ knew that he wasn’t going to score at the rim. He was very efficient in the paint. But I do remember at least once when he converted in the 2nd half. Even 7 footers have a hard time stopping ZZ in a wide open lane when he uses that hook shot-like layup.

Have to shoot it so it touches the backboard on the way up!

No 90 tonight. I like the way this team moves the ball, though. I do believe if we cut and pass well, we win. That’s assuming we defend well.

I watch a lot of Clippers game. Harden and Zubac run the pick and roll as well as anybody in the NBA, right now. Why would I mention that in the Vols/Bulldogs game thread ? Because ZZZ and Aidoo ran the PnR to perfection against the Rebels and it reminded me of Harden and Zubac. I expect it to continue tonight against Miss. St.

THE MATCHUP

• Tennessee is 9-1 in its last 10 outings against Mississippi State, dating back to 2/27/18. The Volunteers were ranked in all nine wins and unranked in the lone defeat (2/1/20).
• The Volunteers' five straight wins over the Bulldogs, dating back to 1/26/21, have come by an average of 14.0 ppg. The streak includes the bigest margin of victory in series history by either side, a 34-point home triumph, 87-53, on 1/3/23.
• Mississippi State was tabbed seventh in the SEC preseason poll after finishing 21-13 (8-10) and reaching the NCAA Tournament last year.
• Graduate student forward Tolu Smith III, a Preseason First Team All-SEC pick who has played in just two games due to an injury that kept him out of the first 12 contests, is averaging a team-best 14.5 ppg, shooting 9-of-11 from the floor and 11-of-12 from the line.
• Rick Barnes is 22-5 against the SEC's two Mississippi schools as a head coach, including 19-5 in his nine-year tenure at Tennessee.

This will probably be a defensive battle and the first team to 70 probably wins.

Harden has always had a gift for the PnR. Ziggie has that touch too!
