On defense the plan seems pretty simple. Don't allow Westherspoon to go off.

On the other end my question would be how is Miss State's depth in the paint? No doubt they'll try to implement the strategy of being physical inside, but do they have depth at the post? I don't think we'll see much more of Williams being knocked down while the refs swallow their whistles down the stretch run.

I hope our guys have the prescription for my Battered Vol Syndrome affliction.

Not gonna be easy by any stretch. They are a good team. Obviously if our big three (AD, Grant, Bone) are hot tonight we have a chance to pull away.

Haven't had the chance to see state this year. Is the order of the day perimeter D? Seems.to me the post should be okay for us and we should limit the looks of their sharpshooters on the outside.

State plays solid basketball. They are quick, and the two Weatherspoons are good guards. Q is better than Nick, but both get a lot of minutes. The other main guard Peters is the real 3 ball threat, but all of them shoot well, so we are going to need a solid defensive effort from the guards. I've only seen four or five of their games this year, but they tend to hang around, and they are always dangerous.
EDIT: Just saw that Nick Weatherspoon was suspended indefinitely for violation of team rules on 2/16, so that eliminates one guard threat unless this is his first game back.

The inside game is going to be tough. They have 3 solid big men in Holman, Perry and Ado. They rebound very well, and for big men shoot FTs well. We need to keep our guys out of foul trouble, because FT shooting has kept them in some games. I do expect our guys to struggle a bit on the glass. Holman and Perry are sort of Alexander size with Ado a little bigger. They do throw up a lot of 3s, so hopefully we can snag some of the long rebounds.

They definitely have played better at home than on the road, and I am glad this game is in Knoxville. Their most impressive road win so far would be at Ole Miss, who they lost to earlier this year at home. They have had some tough losses, at Alabama and a 21point beatdown at Rupp, and a solid home win against Auburn.

They just lost a game at Auburn where they trailed by 10-15 until about 6 mins left, then pulled it to a one possession game. If they had shot their average 3pt percentage they would have won that game. Shots just weren't falling until late.

To me our keys to winning are:

Solid defense from the guards. Keep them from getting open looks, and force them to pass inside. We give up some length inside but not talent. We could see a lot of the Bone, Turner, Bowden/Pons looks tonight.

Keep the rebounding battle close. You give them a bunch of offensive rebound kick outs to open 3s, they will make you pay. We don't necessarily have to win that battle, but we need to make the kick out passes hard.

Speed. We are much faster than State. I think we can wear them down. They may hold it close in the first, but look for us to push them in the 2nd. They do sub a ton to try and limit this, but there is the typical large drop off once you get past the first 6. Feed Williams inside...they don't have anyone quick enough to stop him from the post.

Alexander/Fulk...we are going to need both of them to play their best basketball. They don't have to win it for us, but we really need them to not lose it for us. Their big guys shoot FT well....don't give them the opportunity. Just play solid D and deny the inside pass. I like our guards chances of limiting their 3s, we just need a good, solid effort from our big guys.

All in all, State is an average SEC basketball team. We should handle these guys at home, and it honestly shouldn't be close, though not a blow out either. The line at 8 seem pretty accurate to me. If this were in Starkville....I think we would be looking at another Ole Miss type game, but in Knoxville....Vols hold a comfortable but not going away lead the whole game. I see this one bouncing between a UT lead of 6-12 all night.

In general, they are fairly young in the post. Great size, but I think our experience will trump their height and length in the long run.

They can shoot the 3-ball, so as in every college basketball game, our ability to win or lose depends a lot on our ability and our opponents' ability to hit the 3. A big night could sink us, or a big 3 night by us could make it a runaway. There is no way to predict beforehand what will happen. Just play great defense, and the rest will take care of itself.

Admiral will be guarding Weatherspoon most likely tonight. If he defends him like he did Keldon Johnson/Herro, then we will win easily. We will need to be careful with the ball as they average over 8 steals a game. Either way, if we defend like we did against Kentucky, no chance they win, not likely that most teams could win against that to be fair. We have to bring it though, with it being Senior night, I can't imagine that they won't.

Three games tonight: Combined records: 47-11 / 43-15 / 37-21
Based on this which game would you think would be 1) ESPN 2) ESPNU 3) SEC Network ?

Holy smoke, just looked at MSU's roster and they have SIX players 6'10" or taller. Where do other teams get these huge guys? And the lightest one of the six weighs 240 lbs.

Glad we have them in TBA this year.

It's not all that hard to find big guys that don't move all that well. We are developing a bit more length, which is a good thing for sure. Thankfully we have some guys who play a bit bigger than they are.

Could not agree more about being glad to have them at home.

Which Weatherspoon? Maybe Nick (though he didn't play against Auburn, not sure if he's injured)? I would think that Turner will be on Q. Bone on Carter, Maybe AD on Peters? I would assume you put Kyle on Ado which leaves Perry for Grant.

Actually just looked...Nick Weatherspoon was suspended 2/16 indefinitely so probably not playing. (violation of team rules)

State is a really solid team. They’re highly talented and had some inconsistencies mid-season and struggled to find an identity, but in the past couple weeks, they’ve hit their stride. It will be a good test for our group on an emotional senior night. As a previous poster said, don’t let Weatherspoon go off. If he scores more than 20, Miss State usually wins. If he scores less than 20, they usually lose.

Q I think is playing more of the SF with Nick out. Tyson Carter is playing the two, but I assume Bone will be guarding him with Turner guarding Peters.

Looking at the game notes, I am surprised that UT has only had 1 basketball letterman from both Mississippi and Louisiana when the LSU game notes were done earlier this season. I would have thought that Tennessee would have had more basketball players from those two states.

Could be Admiral on Weatherspoon then. It will be interesting to see how we handle their lineup. They sub a lot back and forth from 3 guards to 3 bigs. Thankfully most our guys can defend pretty much anyone. Against Auburn they had a mix of Q and Peters running the point. I think no matter what we want Turner on ball as often as possible. I like Bone's quickness to stay on the 2. Q is probably a little quick for Admiral, but he could definitely out muscle him. We might actually see a good bit of Bowden/Pons in to defend the 3 when they go small.

Really important to keep that home streak alive for next season. I will be shocked if there's a let-down tonight.
I think we caught a 2nd wind on Saturday. With it being Senior Night for Schofield and Alexander, I'm not worried about a letdown at all. I think we jump on them from the opening tip and control the game throughout. I think it will be in the 10-15 point range.
