The Official #7 Tennessee vs. #2 Purdue Game Thread, 8:00 PM ET, ESPN

Exactly, would I had rather won of course but as long time fan of Basketball a season can go any way. I mean sometimes in March you say Dang, remember when that team was in the Top 10 and now they may not even make the tournament. It is a long ride.
Yep. While I wanted to win, I’d rather be peaking in March and beat Purdue then than beat them now and peak in November. Of course I also would’ve settled for beating them in Nov and Mar but here we are. I think we will see them again.

Aloha from Honolulu. Don’t have time to read all the comments. Just watched these two games up close and personal. Let me tell you it was an extremely rough, physical game on both sides. Our guys held their own against Edey and he really didn’t beat us. Hoyer did. And he was pitiful yesterday so go figure.

Knecht was off today but he is some kind of player. Not sure how the big schools missed him and he ended up at No, Colorado. Overall we didn’t shoot well especially in the second half. Vescovi is I’m a slump and Ziegler is rusty. Hopefully both get back to form soon.

Bottom line- We just went toe to toe with the #2 team in the country and easily could have won with a little better shooting in the second half.) Give Purdue credit. They are tough and nobody can handle Edey down low. (He does camp in the lane for 5 to 7 seconds every play and the refs just won’t call it.) If Hoyer is on, they are tough to deal with. This UT team is a top 10 team though.
And I think he will continue to do it long into the season.
I am complaining about the Refs because in both games I felt they were not at this level of competition to call these games.
The season is young so be it.
Each league has their on way of calling games and when it gets to Tournament Time it becomes a smorgasbord. Sad but true so it becomes a luck of the draw with refs.

Yep, I hope Barnes has a staff that studies film on refs and shows their tendencies on calls of all kinds. So he can prep the players before each game this ref calls this or that a lot so adjust and move on. The NCAA is not going to admonish any refs so we have to live with inconsistent called games.

Overall, hard fought game that should pay dividends throughout the season.

Think it will really help knecht and Gainey after watching film. Both definitely have a scorers mindset that we’ve been lacking, but forced things at times. Once they get the balance between attacking and running the offense we’ll be much better for it, seems to stick in their hands on some possessions. Need vescovi to get out of the slump and think running some more offense for him will help as well.

However, it’s inconsistent within the games. Jay Williams talked after the game about how players feel out the officiating in the first 5 minutes of game time. You see what you can and can’t do. Then, he said they totally changed how they called it in the second half.

I think the game has gotten too fast for some officials, and some are anticipating a foul. There were several situations where they called a foul where there was only contact with the ball. Then, they totally miss an elbow by Edey.

The inexcusable calls were the missed ones on the end lines. Purdue bouncing it out of bounds and then in the second half, the player stepping on the line as he inbounds it. That’s basic elementary level officiating.

It’s one of the easiest calls in basketball to make and that’s the 3 seconds calls - especially when the guy doing it is 7’4” and stands out like a sore thumb. He doesn’t even try to shuffle around under the basket, he just plants and turns until the ball comes his way.

I’m still fuming about that from last night. All the rest, well, we can blame ourselves for losing the game - but the way they let Edey do whatever he wants, whether it’s throwing elbows and doing his best WWE impression or having a nice picnic under the basket - was absolutely inexcusable.

I think the refs were advised both teams like to play physical and they over compensated to control the game. Took a lot of the game away from the players. Even the announcers were saying they were calling touch fouls one time and letting a player get mugged another. Hard for the players to adjust when you don't know what they are calling.

Sudden Impact posted above these refs were not used to calling games with this level of players. I believe their inconsistent calls showed this. They were just hanging on.

As bad as we played (missed open shots), as horrible as the officiating was (they had 48 foul shots), we still managed to take it down to the last 30 seconds of the game against supposedly the #2 team in the country right now. We definitely got hosed, and they weren't going to let us win, but if ZZ, Vescovi, and Gainey can find their shot and start getting consistent, we can beat anyone in the freakin country.

Think about the fact that purdue spent half the night at the foul line, yet barely beat us. If Vescovi and ZZ hit 2-3 more open shots during the game, we just may have won that thing.

I've criticized Barnes on not "coaching" during games and just sitting and watching... I was proud of him last night for finally sticking up for our guys, hopefully this coaching continues for the rest of the season.

I know it sounds crazy, and you could argue that we certainly aren't the only team playing, but it just seems like the gym is playing some sort of factor for our guys--- just looks like we are off/not comfortable shooting there.

Crazy that marquette bounced kansas like they did, hopefully we learned from last night, match up better, and come to get another W before we leave.

Serious question--- are we going to have the same refs? I know childish, but if we have the same officiating crew, we might as well just look at this as a scrimmage and then get on the plane, because it will be more of the same tomorrow and they will not let Pantone 151 beat #1 blueblood kansaaasss.

This is an easy yes answer. There is definately some trade off there that you have to live with in this system.
No. These guys are as well conditioned as anyone in the country. Barnes insists on that. It’s why DJ Burns didn’t see the floor here. The shooting numbers last night were almost entirely a product of bad luck. That’s basketball sometimes.

This hurts about as bad as a November loss can .... Damn, I really wanted that win last night. I'm starting to hate Purdue with a white hot passion.

I realize that Knecht was not playing well, got in Barnes doghouse and sat until around the 9 minute mark in the second half but he and JJJ (and Mashack) should have been slashing to the rim when we had the double bonus around the 10 minute mark. Also, should have played more two man game with ZZ and Aidooo or Awaka while Edey was sitting.
I agree with your premise in general, but Purdue was absolutely defending from 10-15 feet on in. They weren’t allowing penetration, but were willing to give up the three.

Yes, especially when our two most experienced bigs are on the bench saddled with fouls. So, was Aidoo’s 14 point, 11 rebounds game against Syracuse oblivious to you?
Aidoo finished well that game. He really struggled first half. He’s inconsistent. I’m not mad about it though. We haven’t had a consistent inside scoring threat since Fulky’s 4th season.

Made our bigs look like children. The guy is gonna average 20 & 10 at a minimum. If he didn't get in foul trouble we would've been in trouble. The refs helped him some but it was still impressive how he did almost anything he wanted.
If I was 7’4” and 300 pounds and the refs refuse to call 3 seconds, I’d camp out in the lane until they call it. And I haven’t seen a 3 second call in college in years. He’s doing what they allow and there’s not a team in the country that can handle him if he is allowed to do it. He’s going to get 20 to 25 a night just hanging around under the basket. Just too big.

Exactly. On the one “over the back” call he looked lost as to the call and he almost took two heads off trying to rebound. IF he’s allowed to play like that the rest of the year (and I’m sure he will) I can’t think of any big that could come close to stopping him.

We had a few called on us over the past few years but it is rare, I agree
