The Official #8 Tennessee vs. Austin Peay Game Thread, 6:00 PM ET, SEC Network+

Austin Peay was something in the early/mid 70's with Fly Williams. Won the ovc in '72/'73 I think...and made the sweet 16...losing then to Kentucky 106-100 in a game the older Gov faithful say to this day they were absolutely robbed by the refs. Of course they upset the highly ranked Illini in the ncaa tourney in late 80's...then lost in OT to eventually final 4 team Providence. They've had some good teams here and there. Of course beat the Vols about 10 years ago. Fly Williams recruitment story is something special. He is ranked as one of best all time New York streetball players. Now he's in jail for heroin dealing in a sad,sad turn of events for the one time superstar.

I love the play of Awaka, Aidoo, and Mashack!

Hope BJ starts playing better defense to help the future starting lineup!

If Philips returns next season (which appears more likely than before), next years team will be just a reload of this season.

Yes that is too much humility on his part. Or possibly just not grasping what it is that makes his rebounding ability special. The fact that he has that mentality to go along with his other attributes is what takes his rebounding into elite territory. He is elite at all these: vision to find the ball early as the shot goes up, anticipation to figure out what direction the miss will bounce off the rim, quick first step to get to the ball, strong hands to win possession of the ball. His rebounding is very similar to Rodman. Rodman was a little more twitchy and bouncy but at the age Awaka is much stronger than Rodman.

I think his offensive game is not as natural and at this point there is no telling what he will become on that end. Footwork not good yet. Doesn't display good touch. Not explosive at the rim. His "feel" offensively not good yet.

But no matter what happens on that end of the floor he could end up the best rebounder to ever play at UT.
Yes, the rebounding is his forte. I sit close to the court near the baseline, and seeing him close up is impressive. Every time a shot goes up, the people in our area are applauding his effort and are just in awe. I do think his offensive game will end up being good, given time and experience. Lots to work on, but it’s encouraging.

I doubt very seriously it happens but I wouldn’t mind seating Santi tonight, giving his shoulder some rest
Shoulder looks good now. He said after the game that it wasn't so much the pain that caused him to shoot poorly, it was more the fact that he couldn't really go hard in practice and get into a shooting rhythm. Looks like he might be back in a good rhythm now, but don't want to overreact to one game.

Seems like I remember Billy Donavan being the Providence coach.

The 106-100 game went to overtime. Fly Williams missed a jump shot around the free throw line in regulation that he hit 80 percent of the time and it went in an out on him at the buzzer. I was 8 years old but was glued to that game. We should have won it in regulation we led down the stretch, there were a few ball calls down the stretch of that one. APSU could have played with anybody Fly’s freshman year. If Howard Jackson hadn’t fell through a skylight working the following summer they would have been even better his Sophmore year. Jackson was about 6’9-6’10” and strong. This missed that size the next season and they lost to Notre Dame who had Dantley and Tripucka.
