The Official Boston Red Sox Thread

Up to 5 in a row for those scoring at home thanks to 4 different managers tonight hah. F Tampa and that bush league nonsense throwing at Ortiz, getting sick of Joe Maddon and his schtick.

On the bright side Xander is looking as good as any young player not named Trout or Puig. Kid is gonna be a star.

Yep.

It feels good to finally win some games.

Well this season isn't going near the way I expected. Really thought this team was going to challenge for the AL East, some of the veterans just aren't producing the way they normally do. Then add in that some of the young guys are struggling makes for a bad offense. The pitching hasn't been that bad, just aren't winning the close games.

We'll get to see a lot of the young guys in the 2nd half, will be fun to watch.

Btw, pay Lester!!!

Btw, pay Lester!!!

Good to see you back posting some jmoore!

I'm really torn on the whole sign Lester debate. On the one hand he is a great asset and I think he means a ton to the organization and will be productive for a few more years. On the other hand I don't see him as a $120 million dollar pitcher. IF they can keep the contract in the 5 year range and 90-100 mil I would pull the trigger, but I could see him getting 6+ and in the 120 range (thanks Homer Bailey), don't want to be in a similar situation we were a few years ago.

Between Rubby, Workman, Webster and Owens I think we have a solid foundation for the future. Maybe make a few deals (Lester could command a great prospect) and have plenty of money left to sign a free agent.

Still have that pipe dream of bringing Stanton to Fenway until he resigns or is traded somewhere else.

Offense has been brutal. Obviously we miss Ellsbury in a bad way.

13 of the next 15 against AL east opponents..time to make a move.

I disagree. Holt has came in & given this team what they need at the leadoff spot, is he a stolen base threat? No. But he is hitting for average, getting on base, & is a very solid base runner.

Also, Bradley Jr. is an EXCELLENT defender in CF. I might even argue he is a better defender than Ellsbury, & no arguing at all that JBJ has a much stronger arm. JBJ has 11 OF assists, the other day he threw a baseball from home plate into the wind & it landed into the first row of the CF bleachers at Fenway. 424 feet. Incredible.

He is also starting to heat up at the plate, over the last 12 games his line is .375/.432/.425/.857 now obviously he wont sustain those numbers but I think it's a sign of him starting to put things together.

I don't blame the FO for not giving Ellsbury that crazy contract the Yankees did. Especially when they felt like they had his replacement in JBJ.

IMO pay the man, give him 5 years $115-$125 million. He is a ACE, he is exactly what this team needs as a #1 starter. He is durable, proven, & postseason experienced.

If the Red Sox don't pay him, the Yankees will.

As far as $ being tied up, the Sox will have a TON of $ to spend after the '15 season. They have well below $50 million locked in for the '15 season right now.

I agree w/ you on the pitching prospects. I am always worried about trading any prospect away, especially pitching. Our farm system is loaded right now. If we can resign Lester we would be able to afford trading away some of those pitchers for a really nice OF bat (like Stanton)

Sox have won 7 of their last 8. Next 10 games leading up to the trade deadline is against AL East teams, we're about to find out real quick if we are going to buy or sell at the deadline.

Absolutely love Brock Holt. Quickly becoming my favorite player..dude does it all.

J Moore post more often bud. We need to keep this thread active.

@RyanHannable: Brock Holt today: .326/.370/.456 Jacoby Ellsbury on July 21, 2013: .307/.372/.430
The loss of Ellsbury not biggest reason for Sox decline

Kelly is going to shine in Boston. He is so close to getting his command back with his fastball. Craig may even find his swing again too.

WTF happened yesterday, that was incredible, I think....

Really hope they aren't BS'ing and they make a legit attempt at resigning Lester or obtaining a similar ACE (Read: Make it happen at all costs)

Hopefully the rest of the way we will see a few pitchers ready to claim a rotation spot for next year.

No doubt they improved the 2015 offense and they still have a ton of flexibility, both financially and roster wise to make some more moves. I read something like 9 pitching prospects age 25 or younger between AA-MLB levels (+Joe Kelly @ 26) all under team control for years.

Not a fan of finishing last every other year, so hopefully this is the beginning of being back to a very competitive team for years to come.

Having had our lunch handed to us by Allen Craig quite frequently, do not take this season as what to expect from him going forward. He is a real baseball player. He has not had his rhythm and stroke since he came back from the injury. He will get it back and he is Mr. Clutch. Kelly should do well there with his style as well.

Big fan of both. I remember Craig being the man heading into the WS and he was hurt and still a huge threat at the plate. I can definitely see a rebound season in his future. Kelly should get a shot at cementing a rotation spot next year and from the looks of it he has a live arm. Could have done much worse for John Lackey imo. Hopefully for St Louis he honors his 500k contract for next year, but I have a feeling that may get reworked.

Interesting lineup tonight, especially with no Cespedes as he'll be arriving later but may be available.

Holt - RF
Pedroia - 2B
Ortiz - DH
Nap - 1B
Craig - LF
X - SS
Middlebrooks - 3B
Ross - C
Betts - CF

Bradley odd man out tonight, Cespedes projects to RF meaning Holt back to supersub filling in at LF/CF/3B I would guess.

Yoenis making his debut today in LF.

@mlblineups: 8/2 @RedSox lineup vs NYY
Holt 3B
Pedroia 2B
Ortiz DH
Cespedes LF
Napoli 1B
Nava RF
Bogaerts SS
Bradley Jr. CF
Vazquez C
