The Official Brian Williams Thread

Funny i didn't see Williams out guarding those 3's and wide open shots SC were hitting. It's not a mistake or coincidence that other teams shooting percentage goes up when they play Tennessee. It's not hard to hit wide open uncontested shots. When they're not doing that they're fouling like crazy. Tennessee's guards do more watching than guarding.

Absolutely, they had open threes all night. Most D1 players can hit the three if left wide open---unfortunately, this doesn't work well for us, especially Hopson and McBee.

He had 9 pts, 9 rebs and absolutely went to war with their 5 tonight. He was anything but soft. If you want to talk soft, talk about Scotty Hopson.

Yea, not sure what game the OP was watching. Williams battled all night long.

All the responses i've seen have to do with heart, hustle, etc. Nowhere do i see he played a fundamentally sound, skilled game. Let several passes go between his hands and single handily stopped a few fast breaks.

You can play with all the heart you want but anyone can stand around in the paint for 30 minutes and take up space. I want to see him be aggressive and draw more contact and finish around the rim.

You don't grab 9 rebounds without being fundamentally sound, its called boxing out! And the ball going through his hands was because Scotty passed it to his feet... Scotty is junk right now...not Brian

This thread= nit picking. BW has never been the most skilled offensive player but he does his job pretty well.

If every one on the team played to their ability level as much as Williams does, we would be undefeated right now.

agreed. williams has made enormous strides during his time in knoxville. he is vastly improved on the offensive end and gets to more boards this year. not to mention the 100+ lbs he's dropped! i feel for him on his woes at the free throw line but there are some people that 50-60% is the best you can ask for. i have no grievances with williams play this year. the reason for last night's defeat was the poor defense on the perimeter. and the last possession was a total disaster of les miles proportion. the last 2 times we've had the ball for the last shot to win we've gotten 35 foot three's. that's terrible. should have never called a timeout and just pushed it to try to either draw contact and get a foul or maybe someone gets left open like we did against michigan state.

Williams is terrible, Hopson is heartless, McBee is incompetent, S Pearl is a loser, Swiperboy is a Nazi, Goins is a failure. When are you guys going to realize that we have an above average basketball team going through a slump. Bashing everyone makes you feel good, but all of these guys can't be as bad as you say they are. We just don't have anyone who can make outside shots consistently to draw opponents out of the middle. Against Pitt, Hopson was hot, made the outside shots and we won. Hopson and everyone else hasn't made but a hand full of threes in the last 3 games and we lost. If Williams makes some foul shots we win. It is tough to win if you can't shoot the ball no matter how athletic or strong you are.

BW is one point and one rebound away from a double double against good inside talent and the OP wants to bash him?

Worst thread of the year so far in the Bball forum IMO....or the dumbest at least.

I definitely agree with this statement... I didn't see the whole game but when I was watching Brian was a force down low... he does need to go inside a lot more than try to hit that fade away, though

Catfish is not the problem. He is much better than last year. Can't say the same for hopson. This team plays how hopson plays. Pearl should bench him and make a statement! GBO!!!

So i was wrong was I? Williams is getting abused offensively/defensively by a white guy who gives up 50lbs to him. Awful.

Please, anybody but a white guy. I mean this dude is white white. Hasn't been out in the sun light for years.

Williams was 2-4 from the field, had 8 boards(3 offensive), a block and 2 assists. If you think he's this team's biggest problem then I think you need to watch a little more film. Sure, he doesn't have the same explosiveness or intensity as he had in last year's NCAAs, but he also doesn't have JP Prince slashing through the zone to feed him or draw defenders away from him.

Well, i tried to tell you guys two weeks ago how big of a cancer Williams is, but everyone said "how much heart he played with" and "he plays hard". Good analysis by our armchair coaches!!

You're still wrong. Williams is fine when he gives maximum effort. He's stopped doing that. That's the problem.

Brian may be close to losing his starting job. Rob Lewis said that Fields got a good bit of work with the starters tonight. Could be an interesting storyline to watch.

Fields is the better player of the two IMHO, with the exception of his propensity to play with such intensity that he is a favorite of the refs' whistles.

I just think they should cut his minutes down. Less time for Brian to screw up, then whine about it to the refs before they T him up. I don't know where his head is sometimes but it's obviously not in the game. Same could be said for most of the team though.

Mike Griffith tweet:

Brian Williams on hitting 84 of 100 FTs in practice: "That's nuthin, I've hit 94" UT manager rebounding for him at time nods that it's true

wut

Dude barely draws iron on many of his shots in a game. How can he be so terrible if he shoots 80%+ in practice?
