The Official Duke/UNC 2018/19 Basketball Thread!!!

Words mean things
Would you ever look at someone who is very good at something and say "he actually isn't very talented - he simply learned how to do that?"

Clearly they are talented, either naturally, or they developed the skill over time, or whatever.

QA issue. Happens to anything made in a factory.

Could also be standard material fatigue. Average pair of running shoes is good for 300-500 miles. A good pair of hiking boots will last you 600-1000 miles depending on construction and upkeep.

Basketball shoes aren't any different, they have a finite life, and given how broken in his looked, I'd wager to guess that he should have swapped them out for a new pair before last night.

Curry naturally has ridiculous hand-eye coordination, and I think that accounts for much more than 30% of his superstardom. But yeah, I don’t think Wade or Westbrook belong on that list.

Westbrook is one of only 2 NBAers in history to average a triple-double for an entire season, and he's done it twice. That is ridiculous talent. As for Wade, he was one of the better scorers in the history of the league.

They'll both go down among the best of the best to ever play.

Generational. Talent. Nobody is saying he isn't talented. Curry has made the most of his talent.

I’m well aware of what they’ve done. Westbrook still may not be a top-10 player right now, and Wade will have a place in history only because the list of great shooting guards is very very short after Jordan.

How do you know that? It's easy to see a guy can jump high, but IDK how you can tell a guy has natural H2E vs learned skill. Curry's handle was a big question mark going into the draft but he's a wizard at mastering these skills

I know it's derailing the thread, but I'd love to see how you could put together a top 10 list of current NBA players and not include Westbrook. I know he's a really difficult guy, bad teammate, mercurial, whatever, but so are a ton of other great NBA players.

Kawhi
Lebron
AD
Giannis
Harden
Steph
KD
PG

I would say all those guys are better than Russ, and then you could make a case for Embiid, Kyrie, and maybe a few others.

All that being said, I wouldn't exclude Russ from generational talent convo. He's a big PG and the only PG I would say that had his level of athleticism is Iverson.

They looked brand new.

Is there anyone that think these look worn out?

The tread is worn relatively low in several spots, and there's a decent amount of scuff marks and fraying of the stitching. Just because they don't look like he mows the yard in them, doesn't mean they aren't past their life in terms of usage.

After looking up the treads on a new pair of PG2.5s there is significant wear on these shoes.

Can't see much from your low res distance shot, feel free to click on the top picture that I posted and look at it full size to see the tread wear. Not to mention Williamson is wearing a pair of shoes which are signature shoes of an NBA player who is 60+ lbs lighter than him.
That’s not low res. Nor is it distant. There’s minimal to no tread wear.

A lot of chatter on sports shows today about whether Zion Williamson should just quit playing college basketball and get ready for the NBA next season.

And I've noticed that much of the vitriol, like this comment from DeMarcus Cousins, is directed at the NCAA. The NCAA is a joke of an organization, but Zion and all the one-and-dones are in college this year entirely because of an NBA rule.

Warriors' Cousins rips into NCAA after Zion injury

Sorry man, I can't help it you have depth-perception issues. There might have been a flaw in those shoes, but they were far from new.
If there's tread wear on his shoes, it is extremely uniform like @volfanbill said. As you look down more towards the center of the bottom of the shoe, it doesn't really look more worn than the areas around the edges.

You are right though, the shoes definitely aren't new. There's a decent amount of fraying on the sides, not awful looking, but certainly not new. It's still pretty ridiculous that one exploded on him like that.

If there is any player I don’t want chiming in on this issue it’s Boogie Cousins. Anybody else basically.

I wonder if Cousins even attended a class at UK in his one season there

I don’t know. He doesnt seem to be too bright. I’m sure he showed up for underwater basket weaving or some other ******** class that every school has.

I remember at UT we had walking class. 🤓 And I absolutely showed up to that thing hungover as balls half the time to Tom Black Track... Along with the rest of the class.
