Highest floor: Volpe
Early concerns about Volpe’s ability to hit upper-level pitching were eased when he took off in June at Double-A last year, and while there are some arm concerns, he’s a steady defensive presence at short too. He isn’t far from taking a middle-infield spot in the Bronx, and barring any significant changes to his profile, he seems a safe bet to hold down that place for years to come.
Rookie of the Year candidate: Volpe
There are only three 2023 ETAs on this list in Volpe, De La Cruz and Tovar. Oswald Peraza -- another stellar prospect who will feature in our Top 100 overall list -- could complicate matters with the Yankees for Volpe, but the latter still has a higher ceiling because of his superior skills with the bat. If he joins the Bombers by the end of May, Volpe should have a ROY shot.
If the Yankees had their way, they would probably love if Oswald Peraza established himself at shortstop, considering he is the superior defender, and Volpe reached the majors as a second baseman.
The Athletic | Brendan Kuty: To this point, it has been believed that valuable right-handed reliever Michael King wouldn’t be ready for the start of the season and could miss a few weeks of the 2023 campaign. The pitcher himself, however, told Kuty that he anticipates being ready for Opening Day. King missed the final two and a half months of the 2022 season due to a fractured right elbow. He broke out with a 2.29 ERA with a 33.2 strikeout percentage and is one of the most important relievers on the roster.
“He’s got very natural shortstop actions,” Boone said. “He’s athletic; he moves well for a guy that’s got good size to him. He’s got a good throwing arm. He looks the part picking up a ground ball. He can really run. He’s got pop with the bat, hits the ball with authority. I think he’s got a chance to have a long career in this game as a frontline shortstop.”
Michael King tossed two innings against live competition on Wednesday, his third time facing hitters since recovering from a fractured right elbow. The right-hander expects to have plenty of time to be ready for Opening Day, saying that an aggressive offseason program swelled his confidence.
They said he could possibly return the 2nd hald of the season nowI guess this settles it… Luis Medina is destined for stardom with Oakland now.
