Tuesday will mark the first-ever meeting between the Vols and Lions in baseball.
A year after setting a program record and finishing tied for the second most grand slams in NCAA history with 12, the Big Orange are on pace to top that mark after having already hit four through seven games this season.
Hunter Ensley, Reese Chapman, Dalton Bargo and Levi Clark have all homered with the bases loaded this season. Clark was the most recent to accomplish the feat, doing so as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the eighth inning of a 3-3 game against Samford over the weekend, propelling UT to a 7-3 series-clinching victory.
Not Your Average Freshmen
Tennessee's top-ranked true freshman class hasn't wasted any time showing why it was ranked No. 1 in the nation by Perfect Game for 2024.
The trio of Levi Clark (.538), Jay Abernathy (.500) and Manny Marin (.455) have the three highest batting averages on the team entering this week. That trio has combined for 19 runs scored, 18 hits and 15 RBIs through seven games this season. Entering Tuesday's game, a true freshman leads the team or is tied for the team lead in eight major offensive categories including home runs (Clark - 3), RBIs (Clark - 13), slugging percentage (Clark - 1.385), OPS (Clark – 1.973) and stolen bases (Abernathy - 5).
On the mound, RHP Nic Abraham and RHP Brayden Krenzel both posted scoreless outings in their collegiate debuts during last Tuesday's win over UNC Asheville while highly touted RHP Tegan Kuhns has yet to make his debut after battling an illness but has the ability to be a major contributor on this year's staff.
Vitello Fastest to 300
With last Friday's 5-1 win over Samford, Tony Vitello notched his 300th career victory as head coach of the Volunteers, doing so faster than any other skipper in program history. Legendary head coach and Tennessee baseball career wins leader Rod Delmonico needed 501 games to reach 300 victories.
Non-Conference Dominance
Tennessee has been extremely hard to beat in non-conference play during Vitello's tenure. Since the start of the 2019 season, the Vols are 127-23 in non-conference play. UT went 32-3 against non-SEC foes during the 2024 season, including an 8-1 mark in the postseason.
The Big Orange have not lost a regular-season non-conference weekend series since 2020 (Wright State) and have swept 16 of their 18 regular-season non-conference weekend series since 2020, including 13 straight. Tennessee is also 65-10 in midweek games under Vitello, as well.
