The official Oregon Ducks thread (merged)

This might have been covered before but why don't more teams play Oregon's style of offense? By style I mean their hurry up approach. It causes tons of problems for any defense.

Thoughts?

While it is effective, it is still gimmicky. Just like with the option and veer's of the 70's and 80's, D coordinators will figure this out. The only true consistent style of offense that stands the test of time is pro-style. If you can get the right athletes it is impossible to stop.

Football is football. When you can line up and say "I am going to do this, you know it, I know it, and you still can't stop it" it is more effective. What teams like Oregon and Floriday do is still more of a fad.

No knock on Oregon. They are a great team. I just don't think you can do that year in and year out.

That is true. One of the wrinkles that makes them unusual and effective is how they never allow the defense to sub. I guess they will be figured out but when you are back up to the ball that quick and have an offense that creative, seems like a tough task.

I disagree. They are not running a complex offense at all. Teams know what they are going to run can't stop it.

But people have stopped it every year up until this one. Boise State has done it twice. Bottom line, they are a good team this year that has been recruited to run this style. Teams like USC, Miami, etc, have built dynastys on pro-style...USC owned the Pac 10 for a decade. I don't think Oregon can win 10 conference championships in a row.

I see your point. I do not see Oregon winning the Pac 10 for 10 years, because this offense like the others will be shut down by a talented, disciplined defense.

No-huddle is the rage on lower levels and particularly high-school.

You see a lot of schools running the TFS -- Tony Franklin System.

No-huddle Air-Raid.

You have some other no-huddlers: Kevin Wilson variant, Malzahn and a few others.

The thing that impresses me about Oregon's no huddle is how disciplined they are in it's execution. Look at USC trying to run the no huddle for the first time tonight and a bad snap caused a big fumble which changed momentum in the game. False starts, bad snaps, and all the other things you typically associate with no huddle offenses running over prolonged periods of time simply don't happen.

Oregon has a relatively simple offense.
Absolutely great coaching and execution. It also helps when you have the speed that they have.

True. People focus on the speed of the offense but forget how well coached they are. I don't have the stats in front of me, but Oregon seems like a team that isn't penalized very much. Penalties tend to be the litmus for coaching abilities.

Most teams don't run it because most teams o-linemen can't keep up the pace. To run the flash offense you're entire offense. Most teams would exhaust themselves trying to run it.

Thought most of you Oregon guys would enjoy this post from an SC board...lulz.

The Oregon offense is one of the most boring I've seen

Reminds me of Oklahoma offenses that played option until the 80s.

Those Purdue offenses with Brees were and LA Tech game similarly boring because they don't have a balanced offense.

Worse...when does Oregon ever have an audible? Much too dependent on sideline coaching, and gimmmickry and smurfsized players in roles. Few Oregon players will play on Sunday.

Until we get focused on linebackers and defensive schemes like two years ago, evasive running QBs will be our nemesis. We invited Thomas to pass right over the center tonight. The Oregon line eventually opened lanes to run. When we pressured Thomas he was erratic and threw the ball poorly.

Gimmicky.

This is hands down my favorite description of Oregon's offense so far this year just because of how ridiculously dumb it is.

Reminds me of something one of my High School coaches used to say all the time: "If it's stupid but works... It's not stupid."

"Gimmicky" That is the same thing people said about Boise States offense for years.....and they still say that..BUT the past 3 years Boise has played a straight up pro style offense mixed with the Spread..they still do trick plays but nothing like what made them famous.
The Ducks are great to watch...fun to watch..Just like Boise. all these "scared of change" right coasters just don't understand how fun it is to watch.
