Saugus vs. Chino

Centurions Get Reality Check in Road Loss

9/24/2005
Andrew Barlam Signal Staff Writer

CHINO — The Saugus High School football team was invincible in its first two games.
All cylinders were firing as the running game found holes and made plenty of people miss. The defense forced turnovers and had 11 players swarming to every ball. And the kicking game got plenty of action on extra points, helping the Cents romp to two wins.
If only they could play teams like Blair and Pasadena every week.
Going against Chino on Friday produced a different story.
This time it was the Cowboys breaking tackles, forcing turnovers and lining up for one extra point attempt after another as the Centurions got a welcome-to-the-big-leagues punch in the gut with a 48-21 setback.
Suddenly, it’s back to the drawing board for Saugus (2-1), whose schedule only gets tougher with defending CIF-Southern Section Division III champ Notre Dame on deck.
“We thought we were so tough, beating up on those little teams,” said an emotional Saugus quarterback Zach Summers. “And then we get behind, get our butts kicked and everyone just gives up. Until we show we can play with these teams, we’re all talk.”
Summers had a particularly frustrating evening, throwing three first-half interceptions.
In his first game to air the ball out, Summers connected 12-of-20 times for 228 yards and three touchdowns, but five sacks and three turnovers were the numbers that stood out most.
“Just a combination of bad throws, receivers not looking the right way, people not concentrating,” Summers said of his interceptions, two of which bounced off teammates.
The first pick came on the opening drive of the game, with Saugus at the Chino 6-yard line. Greg Salas victimized Summers for the first of two times, setting up a Chino score.
The Cowboys (3-1), playing without top receiver Orlando Brasier, highly touted safety Ryan McFoy and tailback R.J. Stanford, all for disciplinary reasons, showed no signs of a letdown.
Salas took over the playmaking role for McFoy admirably with two picks, a 4-yard touchdown reception and a 61-yard touchdown run on a reverse in the second quarter.
The remaining running options combined for five rushing touchdowns, as Lucas Barbosa, Ryan Shawhan, Marvin Walker and quarterback Art Gracia each crossed the scoring stripe once and Daniel Welch added another, falling on a Gracia fumble in the end zone.
“We did the things you have to do when you’re trying to get back into the game from behind, but this team was very strong,” said Saugus head coach Jason Bornn. “Now there’s no let up. There’s no break. We have to get right back on the horse against Notre Dame, and if we thought these guys were tough, the Knights will be even tougher.”
Summers and Saugus did find a way to make things interesting, as the quarterback responded from his first setback quickly, hooking up with wide-open tight end Alex Koval from 65 yards out on the very next drive, knotting the contest up at 7-7.
He connected with his big tight end again on a 50-yard strike with 3:51 to play in the half, answering back-to-back Chino touchdowns to pull the Cents close at 21-14.
Koval, playing his first game of the season after missing Saugus’ first two weeks because of disciplinary issues, finished the game with three catches for 118 yards and two scores.
“He’s an animal,” Summers said. “He can really fly. He’s probably one of the fastest tight ends in all of California. It was great having him out there burning those DBs deep.”
Saugus got the ball back with less than a minute to go on the Chino 38-yard line, but once again the Centurions were victimized by an interception when Kyle Monson juggled a Summers pass just long enough for Salas to grab it and return the ball to the 14.
Gracia rewarded Salas with a 4-yard pass with two seconds to play in the half, making it 28-14.
“You can’t turn the ball over three times against a team like Chino and expect them not to capitalize,” Bornn said. “If we don’t have those plays, we go into the halftime tied at 21 or we go into it with it 21-14 us, because two of those led directly to their touchdowns.”
Instead, the Cowboys entered the break with all the momentum and proceeded to explode in the second half, with touchdown-scoring plays of three, six and 46 yards, closing things out.
Saugus’ only answer was a 6-yard touchdown pass from Summers to Robert McEntyre late in the third quarter, as a team that scored 12 rushing touchdowns over its first two games was held to just 50 yards on the ground without running into the end zone once.

They play nationally ranked Notre Dame next week so it only gets tougher...

After games of Saturday, Sept. 24)
(Previous ranking in parentheses)
(Thanks to San Diego Section correspondent Tom Shanahan)

1. (1) Mission Viejo 4-0
The Diablos don't play as demanding preleague schedule as last year and last Thursday's match up with winless Marina of Huntington Beach had a predictable outcome. With reserves playing fairly early in the ballgame for Mission Viejo, Kyle Kirchmeyer completed nine of 14 passes for 247 yards in the easy 56-0 win. Senior fullback Chane Moline contributed a rushing and a receiving touchdown for the Diablos, who have a bye this week in preparation for a showdown with No. 5 De La Salle of Concord. Last year's narrow 17-14 win was easily the most difficult game coach Bob Johnson's squad played on its way to state team of the year honors and this year's game may turn out to be its stiffest test as well.

2. (2) Clovis West (Fresno) 3-0
The Eagles finally gave up a touchdown, but one score is all they gave up in a 49-7 blowout of a talented team of Tigers from Edison (Fresno). Clovis West has now outscored its opponents 109-7 through the first three games. While the defense remains the strength of the team with Chris Lewis and Tony Lopes leading the way, the offense kicked into high gear against Edison. Kyle Duffy carried 14 times for 161 yards and four touchdowns, including scoring scampers of 60 and 47 yards. Next up for the Eagles is Bullard (Fresno). Last year the Eagles needed an onside kick recovery followed by a Duffy touchdown to steal a win from the Knights.

3. (3) Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks) 3-0
The Knights recorded a relatively easy 34-7 win over Palmdale, the team that gave coach Kevin Rooney's squad its closest game during its current 25-game winning streak. Last year's contest came down to a game-winning field goal by All-American Kai Forbath, but no last minute heroics were needed this season as senior Rodney Glass rushed for 195 yards and scored four touchdowns in the win. Notre Dame's revamped offensive line, which lost five starters from last year, has played stellar early on this season and will need to be firing on all cylinders in two weeks when the Knights face Valencia. Next up for the two-time defending CIFSS DIV. III champs is 2-1 Saugus.

Tracy Slocum of Clovis East hopes to represent the Golden State well during this weekend's game at Midland, Texas.
4. (4) Clovis East (Clovis) 3-0
The Timberwolves again proved their depth can wear you out, pulling away in the second half against Bullard (Fresno). While Tracy Slocum again led the ground game, coach Tim Murphy found effective changes of pace with Andrew Pancotti, D.J. Savoy, and Alex Cabatic turning in big plays out of the backfield. Carlos Cavazos came up with the big defensive play, intercepting Bullard's Alex Huerta deep in T'wolves territory to help secure the 25-15 win. Now Clovis East will try to win one for the Golden State in Texas against the Rebels of Midland-Lee.

5. (5) De La Salle (Concord) 2-1
It was a different cast of characters who led the Spartans to their 35-21 win last Friday over Mitty of San Jose. Junior running back Tim Maupin rushed for 165 yards and three TDs while sophomore QB Mike MacGullieray had a rough start with a pick being run back for a score but finished with a pair of TD passes. This week, DLS hosts Palma of Salinas, which is 3-0 and battled the Spartans to an 8-8 tie last year in Salinas.

6. (6) Poly (Long Beach) 2-1
Millicent Olawale tossed a pair of touchdown passes, one a 28-yarder to Travon Patterson and the other a little 2-yard lob pass off a play fake to Fenika Enosa, as the Jackrabbits ventured to San Diego and beat the San Diego Section's No. 2 ranked team, Mira Mesa, 24-10. The real difference in the game, though, was up front as the quick Poly defensive line sacked Mira Mesa QB Mike Coughlin seven times. This week, the Jackrabbits host Dominguez of Compton and then will start Moore League play.

7. (7) St. Bonaventure (Ventura) 4-0
In its rise as a true statewide football power, last week's 43-27 win over Lakewood was one the Seraphs' most important. Not only was it the program's first win over a CIFSS Div. I school, it also avenged last season's 24-7 loss, the only defeat for the defending CIFSS Div. IV champs. Running back Michael Lee rushed for 120 yards and two second half scores, but as has been the case in several of its big games in recent years, coach Jon Mack's squad benefited from its opportunistic defense. Glenn Wakam scored on a 36-yard interception return and Doug Chavez scored on a 56-yard fumble recovery as well. St. Bonaventure will need more big performances on both sides of the ball when they face dangerous Crespi of Encino this week. Like St. Bonnie, the defending CIFSS Div. X champs are quite capable of defeating schools from a higher division within the Southern Section.

8. (8) Edison (Huntington Beach) 3-1
The Chargers are playing quite well since their season-opening loss in Hawaii, as they recorded a 27-7 win last week over a tough Servite of Anaheim squad. Leading the charge offensively was senior quarterback Brian Schrock, who completed 25 of 35 passes for 293 yards in the win. Hunter White caught seven of Shrock's passes for 131 yards while the defense contributed five sacks and did not allow Servite's offense to score. All-County pick Romney Fuga led the way defensively with three sacks. This week, Edison will take on its second straight opponent from the rugged Serra League when it travels to face 1-2 Mater Dei of Santa Ana. After that tough game, Edison will battle the likes of Esperanza and Los Alamitos for the Sunset League title.

9. (12) Valencia 3-0
The duo of quarterback Michael Herrick and all-purpose back Shane Veeren continue to impress for rookie coach Larry Muir. In Valencia's 48-20 win over El Toro, Herrick surpassed the 8,000-yard mark passing, as he completed 12 of 16 passes for 314 yards and three touchdowns. Vereen contributed 221 all-purpose yards, which included a 86-yard rushing touchdown and four touchdowns overall. Valencia will be taking on 2-1 St. John Bosco of Bellflower this week and cannot overlook the Braves in anticipation of its showdown with Sherman Oaks Notre Dame in two weeks. The Braves are a scrappy bunch from the tough Serra League who are used to taking on teams similar to Valencia in talent level.

10. (12) Del Oro (Loomis) 3-0
The Golden Eagles were heavily favored going into their road game last Friday against St. Mary's of Stockton. Even though St. Mary's won last year's Sac-Joaquin Section Div. I title, the Rams were coming off a 49-7 loss to Chowchilla. St. Mary's played better, but was still no match for Del Oro as coach Casey Taylor's squad won, 36-15. QB Dan Hart rushed for two TDs and passed for another. This week, Del Oro plays Woodcreek of Roseville.

Rivals.com

Toby Turpin of Los Alamitos is an outstanding defensive lineman.
11. (11) Los Alamitos 3-0
The Griffins were able to overcome a sluggish offensive performance in defeating Locke of Los Angeles, 14-6, to remain undefeated. Los Al was aided immensely by a defense that set up both offensive touchdowns, as Everett Mason returned an interception 20 yards for a score and Logan Cunningham returned another pick down to the Saints' two-yard line. Chris Soto, who finished with 82 yards on 23 carries, scored the game-winner two plays later. Los Alamitos will next face 2-1 La Habra and the Griffins will need to iron out their offensive woes in the next two weeks if they figure to win the Sunset League title over the likes of Edison and Esperanza of Anaheim.

12. (13) St. Francis (Mountain View) 4-0
Richie Scudellari completed 11 of 13 passes for 138 yards and one TD and Matt Taufoou bolted for 120 yards on 11 carries and scored another TD as the Lancers upheld their No. 1 ranking for the Central Coast Section with a 21-10 victory over Salinas. St. Francis now opens West Catholic Athletic League play and begins this week with a home game vs. Riordan of San Francisco.

13. (nr) Lutheran (Orange) 3-0
Despite the graduation losses of some key personnel from its last two successful seasons, the Lancers have climbed back into the state top 20 thanks to their 22-19 win over previous No. 9 Santa Margarita. Lutheran got behind by 19 points in the first half, but was able to pull out the win behind the heroics of Aaron Corp, who is quickly turning into one of the better underclass quarterbacks in the state. After throwing three first half interceptions, he turned things around by scoring on a 55-yard run right after intermission and connecting with Kyle Cordova on a game winning, 17-yard touchdown pass with one minute remaining in the ball game. Lutheran served notice that it would be a team to be reckoned with in its week two win over Mater Dei of Santa Ana and this week's game against speedy Crenshaw of Los Angeles will be another tough test for a young Lancers' squad.

14. (14) Oaks Christian (Westlake Village) 3-0
Another week and another easy win for coach Bill Redell's squad, as the Lions downed overmatched Burbank, 50-10. Junior quarterback Jimmy Clausen passed for 341 yards and five scores while fellow junior Marc Tyler gobbled up 222 yards rushing on only 16 carries. This may be a similar theme for Oaks Christian, who may not face a team all season long who can stay relatively close to them. This week's opponent, Oak Park of Agoura Hills, is coming off a 24-13 loss to a Newbury Park squad that would be a heavy underdog if it were to face the Lions.

15. (15) McClymonds (Oakland) 3-0
Following their easy victories over Vallejo and Granada of Livermore, the Warriors had it maybe even easier in their third game, a 63-0 win over Jefferson of Daly City. That will all change drastically this week as coach Alonzo Carter's squad hits the road to play No. 18 in the state Dorsey of Los Angeles. That talent-laden matchup will be followed up the next week when Mack hosts equally-talented Crenshaw of Los Angeles.

16. (16) Rancho Bernardo (San Diego) 3-0
Out of 21 sportscasters and sportswriters who vote in the San Diego Section rankings, 19 first-place votes currently are going to the Broncos. They did not play last weekend. Up next for Rancho Bernardo is a road game vs. Fallbrook.

17. (9) Santa Margarita (Rancho SM) 2-1
The Eagles were flying high in the first half in Friday night's game with Orange Lutheran, but could not hold onto the momentum as they dropped a 22-19 decision. Santa Margarita benefited from three first half interceptions, but was hurt by two defensive holding penalties (including one that negated an interception) on Lutheran's game-winning drive. Despite the loss, Santa Margarita can still prove it is one of the top teams in the state by winning the Serra League title. A win by Los Angeles Dorsey over undefeated McClymonds of Oakland this week will also look good for the Eagles since they handed Dorsey its only loss.

Dorsey's Jovon Hayes may go mano-a-mano with Mack's Derrick Hill in this week's big game.
18. (17) Dorsey (Los Angeles) 2-1
Although the Dons easily downed Fairfax of Los Angeles, 34-7 last Friday, they take a slight hit in these rankings as a result of Santa Margarita's loss to Orange Lutheran since the Eagles beat them at home two weeks ago. This week will be an important one not only for the Dons, but for all the top teams in the L.A. City Section. Undefeated McClymonds of the Oakland Section travels down to face the Dorsey in a match up that will showcase as many as 20 Division I college prospects. If Dorsey can pull out the win, Crenshaw of Los Angeles, its rival in the Coliseum League will be looking to take out the Mack next week in Oakland. Crenshaw is coming off a big win over a Colton squad that was state ranked last week and this week they will face the same Orange Lutheran squad that beat Santa Margarita. Another L.A. City Section squad that will be looking pretty if Dorsey and Crenshaw can win its next two games will be Taft of Woodland Hills, as they handed the Cougars their only loss of the season.

19. (19) Palma (Salinas) 3-0
Despite having no one rush for more than 43 yards and QB Jordan Casas only passing for 92 yards, the Cheiftains still had 342 yards of total offense in their 35-0 shutout of San Mateo Serra. Brandon Bartley, a 6-1, 220-pound junior, rushed for two TDs and could be a problem this week for De La Salle. It looks like Palma has a good shot at becoming the first CCS or NCS team since 1991 to get a win against the Spartans.

20. (20) Nevada Union (Grass Valley) 3-0
After last Friday's 20-14 triumph over Elk Grove, the Miners probably have four straight blowouts staring at them until they get Grant and Granite Bay in back-to-back weeks. The first of those games is this week against McClatchy of Sacramento, which has the longest current losing streak in the state. Nevada Union will be in the stronger Delta League next year. Against the Herd, Josh Noxon's 10-yard TD run with five minutes left gave the Miners a 20-7 lead. Their defense still had to hang on, though, as Elk Grove's Nick Nugent returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown.

Saugus runs out of time in near upset of nationally ranked Notre Dame.

10/1/2005
Cary Osborne [Signal Staff Writer]

Nobody gave Saugus a chance against high school football giant Notre Dame.
To say the Centurions were an underdog coming into Friday’s game at Cougar Stadium may have been an understatement.
But the unheralded Centurion team gave itself a chance against the nation’s No. 24 team according to USA Today, Notre Dame, a team that had won 25 straight games coming into the contest and three consecutive CIF titles.
Saugus put a deep scare into the Knights, but in the end, time ran out and the Centurions fell 21-7.
“I overheard some of the Notre Dame players saying they were exhausted, which was good to hear,” said Saugus head coach Jason Bornn of the late fourth-quarter atmosphere. “It was just a matter of time. Our guys were energized — they didn’t want the game to end. I wanted another quarter, but you only get 48 minutes.”
It was with 2:07 left that the Centurions faced a fourth-and-10 at their own 26-yard line, down 21-7.
Bornn called for his punt team to go onto the field, then called a timeout.
He reversed his decision, then called for the offense to give it another shot.
Saugus quarterback Zach Summers took the snap, looked for his receivers deep, then kept the ball.
He sliced the Notre Dame defense up for 19 yards and a first down ... the clock ticked.
“It seemed like (the clock) was going so fast,” Summers said.
The senior signal-caller followed with an 9-yard completion to receiver Casey Stevenson ... the clock ticked.
He then completed a 12-yarder to tight end Alex Koval down to the Notre Dame 34 ... the clock ticked.
Summers was inundated on the next play by the Notre Dame defensive line and sacked for a 5-yard loss.
With 50 seconds left, he had a last gasp.
“I (thought) we were going to make a touchdown, onside kick it, then get a Hail Mary and make it one hell of a game,” Summers said.
The senior quarterback threw a dart to Stevenson who was immediately met by two Knight defenders.
The ball popped out of Stevenson’s hands and toppled into Notre Dame hands along the sideline.
“My heart just dropped when I saw that,” Summers said. “The ball came loose and none of our guys are there, it’s heartbreaking.”
Saugus’ hope drifted into the night.
But that 47 minutes of hope was built on the Centurions playing Centurion football.
They ran the ball, controlled the clock and limited Notre Dame on the ground.
But in the air, Saugus struggled early.
Knight quarterback Dayne Crist was given time to find his receivers downfield.
On Notre Dame’s first drive, Crist threw passes of 32 and 27 yards, the latter being a touchdown for the early 7-0 lead.
On the Knights’ next drive, Crist found 6-foot-5 tight end Mike Stanton deep against 5-foot-6 safety Ryan Purdy.
He threw the ball up for grabs with Stanton reaching over Purdy for a 44-yard completion.
“I don’t think it was size, it was the time the quarterback had to throw,” Bornn said. “We ask (our cornerbacks) to cover for three seconds, after that the defensive line needs to get pressure up front. We didn’t give our corners any let-up.”
The Notre Dame offensive line followed the play by parting the defensive line, allowing for Crist to bolt for a 30-yard touchdown run for a 14-0 lead.
Saugus wouldn’t relent.
For Bornn’s three years at Saugus, he has preached the run to eat up the clock and keep the other team’s offense of the field.
On Saugus’ ensuing possession, they ran the ball 14 times in an 18-play 80-yard drive that ate up 10:08.
Summers ran for 36 yards on the drive, including a 1-yard dive for a touchdown, cutting the lead down to 14-7.
Going into halftime, the Centurions were unharmed by senior running back Rodney Glass, who came into the game averaging 10.2 yards per carry.
Glass had two carries in the first half for zero yards and a fumble.
With one quick run, he changed things.
Glass took a sweep on the right side from the 34-yard line, ran, broke tackles, waited, then ran — ending up with a 63-yard trot.
Two plays later he scored from 1-yard out for a 21-7 lead.
Glass finished with 102 yards on 13 carries.
Each team ran the clock down deep into the fourth quarter, with both defenses holding steady.
Saugus had the ball at its own 24 with 2:45 to go and tried some trickery.
Running back Justin Skinner took a pitch, then threw the ball to a waiting Stevenson, 42-yards down the field.
But the Centurions couldn’t capitalize.
A defensive stand brought them to a final shot, where Summers succeeded on fourth down, but could do no more.
Notre Dame head coach Kevin Rooney admitted he was nervous during the latter part of the game.
“It was a big struggle,” he said. “They did a great job controlling the clock. They were able to run the ball.”
Summers finished with 57 yards rushing and was 9-of-18 passing for 72 yards and an interception.
“It’s tough,” Summers said of the loss. “Just the statement we could have made tonight. We did, just not as big as I wish we could have.”

I've mentioned this before...My son played passing league games with, but not against, Jimmy Clasuen. He plays against some of the best QB in the country...Tylor Lyons, Micheal Herrick, Garret Green...He says that Clausen is the best passer that he's EVER seen.. And he's been to the Nike camps also. He was in a passing game in Claremont this summer and got Casey, Rick and Jimmy to sign the game ball.....Lucky kid...got a feeling it migh be worth something someday.

Updated State Top 20 Football Rankings
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mark Tennis & Ronnie Flores
CalHiSports Staff

(After games of Saturday, Oct. 8)
(Previous ranking in parentheses)
(Thanks to San Diego Section correspondent Tom Shanahan)

1. (1) Mission Viejo 5-0
After the Diablos crushed Mater Dei earlier this season, there was speculation that they might be better than last year's team that went 14-0 and ended No. 2 in the final Student Sports FAB 50 national rankings. Now that they had to rally from a 23-16 deficit in the third quarter to beat De La Salle, 36-26, maybe that's not the case. Mission Viejo opens up its South Coast League schedule on Friday at home against Dana Hills. It also would have helped their cause for a higher national ranking if Valencia had beaten Notre Dame. If Valencia had won that game, a potential Valencia-Mission matchup in the CIF Southern Section Div. II final might have been No. 1 vs. No. 2 in the state.

Notre Dame quarterback Garrett Green is shown as a sophomore after leading his team to the CIFSS Div. III title in 2003 at the Home Depot Center.
2. (3) Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks) 5-0
After previous No. 2 Clovis West's loss to Corona Centennial, the Knights move up to the No. 2 position and we have no problem stating that they'll stay there if they run the table the rest of the season and win another CIFSS Div. III title. Notre Dame's 27th straight win was by 35-28 over Valencia (No. 7 in last week's rankings). Looking ahead, it helps Notre Dame's strength of schedule that the CIFSS Div. III playoffs also will likely include the likes of Dominguez (beat Long Beach Poly) and whoever wins between Peninsula and Mira Costa (beat Esperanza).

3. (8) Edison (Huntington Beach) 4-1
As you all know, Clovis West wasn't the only top five team from last week that lost. No. 4 Clovis East was tripped up by Fresno Edison (1-3 entering the game) and No. 5 De La Salle lost to Mission Viejo. Edison was chosen to move up to the No. 3 position this week since its loss came to an out-of-state opponent (Kamehameha of Hawaii) that also is No. 1 in its state and in that game the Chargers had to do without three-year starting QB Brian Schrock. They've looked the part of being a preseason team to watch since then with wins over San Clemente, Capistrano Valley, Servite and two weeks ago over Mater Dei. Another factor favoring Edison is that the state rankings also include as a criteria how other rankings have the teams pegged and in the L.A. Times' top 25 the Chargers are No. 2, ahead of Notre Dame. Edison, which had a bye last week, faces 4-1 Esperanza of Anaheim in a major test this week.

4. (6) St. Bonaventure (Ventura) 5-0
The idle Seraphs also make a move up as a result of last week's upset losses suffered by Clovis West and Clovis East. St. Bonnie has been impressive in wins over tough opponents such as Hart of Newhall and Lakewood, but don't figure to get challenged in Channel League play until the second to last week of the regular season against Ventura. Coach Jon Mack's squad has won nine consecutive league tiles and 36 straight league games. They open league play this week with 0-4-1 Dos Pueblos of Goleta.

5. (nr) Centennial (Corona) 4-1
Here's where this week's rankings really got messy. We looked at several variations of the top 20 that included different teams in the five hole, but the one that worked best in fitting all the pieces together was to catapault the Huskies all the way from No. 18 in SoCal to this position in the state. Yes, they did lose in their first game to Long Beach Poly, but that was before sophomore Ryan Bass (700 yards in two weeks) exploded onto the scene and since then the Jackrabbits have lost to Dominguez. Centennial also didn't just beat Clovis West; it was a three-touchdown margin. This also is a program that was No. 4 overall in the state a year ago and has a chance to cement this high of a ranking with a huge matchup this week against Norco. It sure looks like Norco is a much better team than last year when the Huskies beat them twice.

6. (2) Clovis West (Fresno) 4-1
Last year after the Golden Eagles lost to Corona Centennial they were even lower in the rankings because they had already dropped one earlier to Fresno Edison. At least this year they're 4-1 at this point instead of 3-2. Clovis West still has a 7-0 win over De La Salle and a 49-7 win over Edison. Any chance for the No. 1 overall ranking is probably gone, but the Golden Eagles could still climb back higher depending on how they do as well as De La Salle and Corona Centennial the rest of the way.

7. (5) De La Salle (Concord) 3-2
There was some discussion in our rankings conference call on Monday to keep the Spartans where they were from last week because they played No. 1 Mission Viejo so well on the road in Southern California. But since they've lost not one but two in a row against Clovis West they still have to be behind that team in the rankings unless the Golden Eagles lose again. DLS has an easy game on tap this week at home against Antioch.

8. (7) Valencia 4-1
The Vikings take only a slight hit in these rankings since their loss to No. 2 Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks was a close contest (35-28). The Vikings actually had a 21-14 halftime lead, but could not overcome four interceptions thrown by quarterback Michael Herrick, who completed 18 of 33 passes for 320 yards in a losing effort. Junior Shane Vereen also gave a big-time effort, as he caught seven passes for 139 yards, two touchdown receptions of 36 and 87 yards and finished with well over 200 all-purpose yards. As long as Herrick and Vereen stay healthy, the Vikings should make a nice run at the CIFSS Div. II title, although they should not overlook Hart and Canyon in Foothill League play in anticipation of a possible rematch with No. 1 Mission Viejo in the championship game. Valencia will look to rebound this week against 3-2 Burroughs of Burbank.

9. (9) Del Oro (Loomis) 5-0
The Golden Eagles' defense was the story in a 17-0 win over Woodland. While the offense was sloppy with four turnovers (two of them deep in their own territory), the defense stepped up and held Woodland to just more than 100 total yards. What offense Del Oro did get was mostly from running back Nick Huppe, who ran for 186 yards on 37 carries and scored two TDs. He also kicked a field goal and two PATs. This week, Del Oro takes on perhaps its toughest Sierra Foothill League foe of the year with a matchup against unbeaten Rocklin.

10. (10) St. Francis (Mountain View) 6-0
The Lancers displayed a lot of depth and a lot of balance in a 35-7 win over Mitty of San Jose, which was impressive enough to ponder a move up to the No. 8 spot this week. Mitty, after all, lost by a closer margin (35-21) to De La Salle. St. Francis, though, doesn't have any games against non-Central Coast Section opponents this year and it doesn't help that the CCS teams that have played outside the section, particularly Valley Christian, haven't fared very well.

11. (11) Lutheran (Orange) 5-0
Entering league play, the Lancers have established themselves as the third-best team in Orange County behind No. 1 Mission Viejo and No. 3 Edison. The Lancers have been solid on offense, defense and special teams and are the heavy favorite to win the Empire League. The Lancers enjoyed last week's homecoming festivities, as they routed El Rancho of Pico Rivera, 42-2. They marched down the field 65 yards on nine plays on the opening drive, which was culminated on a five-yard touchdown run by Tyson Seneca. Moments later, Kyle Cordova blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown and the reserves saw most of the action in the second half. They open league play this week against 5-0 Kennedy of La Palma, a team that has not ventured far from home while Lutheran has defeated the likes of Mater Dei, Santa Margarita and Crenshaw of Los Angeles.

Thanks to Norco coach Todd Gerhart for getting us some shots of Toby. He runs past a defender from Canyon Springs in this shot.
12. (20) Norco 5-0
On the road in Orange County last Thursday, the Cougars moved their record to 5-0 as they downed Tustin, 49-21. Once again leading the charge was senior running back Toby Gerhart, who gained 236 yards rushing in 12 carries to become the Inland Empire's all-time leading rusher. He has a good chance to break the state's all-time mark held by Lorenzo Booker (St. Bonaventure, Ventura) as he needs just 1,058 yards and could possibly play eight or nine more games. Records, however, are the furthest thing on Toby's mind as his team faces league rival and No. 5 Centennial this week. Norco has moved up eight positions in this week's rankings and could move up to Centennial's No. 5 berth if they were to beat the Huskies. Centennial, however, won both games last season and Norco must prove it can slow down its high-powered offense.

13. (nr) Poly (Long Beach) 3-2
The Jackrabbits would be back up to the No. 2 position in this week's rankings had they not dropped an overtime game to Dominguez of Compton two weeks ago, a team that could easily be state-ranked as well. The reason we've now put back Poly into the top 20 and in front of Dominguez is due mostly to Centennial's convincing win over previous No. 2 Clovis West. That's good news for the Jackrabbits since they opened their season with a win over the Huskies. Poly's other loss was to an out-of-state foe that is one of the five best teams in the country. Last week, coach Raul Lara's squad easily downed cross-town Millikan, 65-6, and the 'Rabbits should remain in the rankings as long as they don't suffer another let down and Centennial makes a nice run at the CIFSS Div. V title while they make a strong bid in Div. I. In fact, if Poly and Centennial were both to win CIFSS titles, the head-to-head win would be more of a factor and the Jackrabbits would be in front.

14. (12) Los Alamitos 5-0
Los Al downed Carson on the road, 33-21, after trailing by seven points as they scored 19 unanswered points. The game versus the Colts was supposed to be the Griffins' toughest test before Sunset League play, but Carson is enduring its worst season since the 1960s. Los Al was led offensively by receiver Ryan Pettys, who hauled in nine catches for 95 yards and two scores. Despite the win, Los Al still has to drop two spots in this week's rankings to make way for other teams that have even stronger reasons for moving up. The Griffins open league play with 3-2 Huntington Beach and will have a chance to record some quality wins at the end of the season.

15. (14) Oaks Christian (Westlake Village) 4-0
Like Los Al, the Lions drop slightly in the rankings even though they
won last week, in their case a 65-12 romp over Tri-League foe Santa Paula. In the win, super junior Jimmy Clausen completed 10 of 12 passes for 322 yards and four touchdowns in less than three quarters of play. This will probably be a recurring theme the rest of the season for the Lions, who like Orange Lutheran, just won't play a team on their remaining schedule that warrants a bump up in the rankings with a win. This week, they face 4-1 Fillmore and its unlikely Clausen will see action in the fourth quarter. Trust us, though, once some of the other highly-ranked teams sort things out for themselves in other playoff divisions, we guarantee that's when it will be time to move up the Lions.

16. (15) Rancho Bernardo (San Diego) 5-0
Last week, Rancho Bernardo defeated Carsbad, 24-21. The Broncos, who dominated their first three opponents, were forced to come from behind for the second straight week. This time, they faced a 21-0 deficit in the second quarter before scoring 14 points in the second quarter and 10 in the fourth while the defense shut out the Lancers in the second half. Rancho Bernardo pulled out the win when first-year football player Ryan Schmitz kicked a 42-yard field goal with 6.6 seconds remaining. The score was set up by a 19-yard run to the 26-yard line. Nick Pascarella scored two touchdowns on runs of 6 and 30 yards and finishied with 12 carries for 89 yards. A fumble recovery set up Rancho Bernardo's other touchdown as Richard Caldwell scored on a 13-yard run. This Friday's game will be at Westview (1-4) in a Palomar League opener.

Associated Press

UCLA linebacking All-American candidate Spencer Havner is a former Nevada Union Miner.
17. (17) Nevada Union (Grass Valley) 5-0
Quarterback Josh Noxon was the only Miner to score more than one TD with two as head coach Dave Humphers spread around the carries in a 61-14 win over Kennedy of Sacramento. More of the same is expected over the next two games against Yuba City and Johnson, but then things get interesting with matchups against Grant and Granite Bay.

18. (18) Grant (Sacramento) 5-0
This is the point of the 2004 season in which things started falling apart for the Pacers in a loss to Granite Bay and last Friday they were behind the Grizzlies, 21-14, entering the fourth quarter. This time, though, Grant made the big plays down the stretch and defeated Granite Bay, 28-21. Tim Lang threw a 48-yard TD pass to Ronald Richardson to tie the game, while the game-winning score came on a 39-yard fumble return by defensive back Daniel McInnis. Coach Mike Alberghini's squad meets Bella Vista of Fair Oaks in this week's game.

19. (20) Taft (Woodland Hills) 5-0
Taft jumps ahead of Dorsey this week as the Toreadors remain unbeaten as a result of their 38-6 win over a tough Narbonne of Harbor City squad. Taft's talent level is similar to No. 5 Centennial's and maybe even Long Beach Poly's, but they must prove they can down league foe Birmingham and win the big game in the L.A. City Section playoffs. In the win over the Gauchos, speedster Jamere Holland scored on a 78-yard reception and a 70-yard punt return while junior standout Malcolm Smith also scored on a 78-yard catch. This week, Taft takes on 2-3 Granada Hills before meeting Birmingham at home in two weeks.

20. (17) Dorsey (Los Angeles) 4-1
We may hear grumblings in South L.A. since the Dons have dropped this week in spite of winning, but its previous ranking ahead of Taft was partially based on Santa Maragarita's showing and the Eagles are now 3-2 with last week's loss to Foothill of Tustin. The Dons, who lost to Santa Margarita three weeks ago, did their part by recording a big 46-21 win over Birmingham of Lake Balboa, the team that defeated them in last season's section title game. Stafon Johnson once again paced the Dons by rushing for 178 yards in 27 carries with two touchdowns while Lavell Wallace chipped in with 69 yards on 10 carries with two more scores. The Dons will have a chance to prove they are the top team in the city by winning the Coliseum League over Crenshaw. Taft, meanwhile, has to prove it can get past the Birmingham team that Dorsey just handily beat.

Well mighty Glencoe is off to a 1-4 start. :bad:

But we've only played one cupcake thus far and had a close game against Aloha High School but lost that one. We still have two more Hillsboro teams left to play, both of which we will probably beat and we could take down Sunset High School as well. So we can still pull out 4 wins from this season if we turn things around.

This week is against Jesuit High School. We will get creamed. But at least we get to go harass all the rich kids from University of Jesuit who's players are recruited.

20. (20) Crenshaw (Los Angeles) 3-3
Notes & Highlights
Rancho Cucamonga was looking like a solid SoCal top 25 team, but dropped a 52-21 decision to cross-town Los Osos, who is now 5-1 on the season and looking to crack the top 25 themselves. Centennial's blowout loss to Norco also doesn't look good for Rancho Cucamonga, although the Cougars only lot by two points to the Huskies. The only loss for Los Osos has been to Chino Hills, which has established itself as the favorite in the Sierra League. Chino Hills, led by head coach Terry Roche (who previously enjoyed success at Diamond Bar), moved its record to 6-0 with a convincing 43-6 win last week over a solid Glendora team. The CIFSS Div. II rankings currently list Rancho Cucamonga in front of Chino Hills, which makes no sense at all…..
Another team that's reeling is Santa Margarita of Rancho Santa Margarita, which opened up the season highly ranked as the Serra League favorite but now has lost three of its last four games. The Eagles lost their Serra League opener, 25-18, to Loyola of Los Angeles, which won its first league contest under the tutelage of first-year coach Jeff Kearin. Kearin was a former assistant under long-time head coach Steve Grady and is not really a rookie coach as he enjoyed coaching success at Brophy Prep in Phoenix. Check the current state rankings in Arizona – Brophy is No. 3 in Class 5A – which shows that the people Kearin left behind aren't too shabby, either…..

Wilcox line standout Isaac Leatiota has helped his team to a 6-0 record so far this season.
Division II
1. (1) Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks) 6-0
2. (2) St. Bonaventure (Ventura) 6-0
3. (4) Lutheran (Orange) 6-0
4. (3) Del Oro (Loomis) 6-0
5. (5) Dominguez (Compton) 5-1
6. (6) Oceanside 6-0
7. (7) Mira Costa (Manhattan Beach) 6-0
8. (8) Peninsula (RH Estates) 6-0
9. (9) Oak Ridge (El Dorado Hills) 4-2
10. (10) Ventura 6-0
11. (11) McClymonds (Oakland) 5-1
12. (12) Palm Springs 6-0
13. (13) Tulare 6-0
14. (15) Cordova (Rancho Cordova) 6-0
15. (nr) St. Francis (La Canada) 6-0
On the Bubble: Casa Grande (Petaluma) 5-1, Los Gatos 4-2, Mayfair (Lakewood) 5-1, Moorpark 4-2, San Pasqual (Escondido) 6-0, Santa Fe (Santa Fe Springs) 6-0, Valencia (Placentia) 6-0, West Covina 6-0, Wilcox (Santa Clara) 6-0.
Notes & Highlights
The only team to drop out from last week's rankings was previous No. 14 Los Gatos, which lost by 17-14 to Wilcox of Santa Clara. Wilcox improved its own record to 6-0 and also has a win over a pretty good Div. I San Benito of Hollister squad. The Chargers are led by Cal defensive line commit Isaac Leatiota…..
A big showdown takes place this week in the South Bay area of Los Angeles that will shake up the Division II rankings. Mira Costa of Manhattan Beach (No. 7) takes on No. 8 Peninsula of Rolling Hills Estates in a Bay League battle of unbeatens. Mira Costa rolled over South Torrance, 34-13, last week and continued to show that its earlier win over Div. I Esperanza was no fluke. Peninsula held up its end of the bargain by defeating West Torrance, 28-7. Both teams are well coached and have produced quality teams over the last few years. This year, Mira Costa has played slightly tougher opponents but must travel to play this game during the day on Friday up in the hills of the Palos Verdes Peninsula….

Division III
1. (1) Yosemite (Oakhurst) 6-0
2. (4) Northwood (Irvine) 7-0
3. (3) Tesoro (Las Flores) 5-1
4. (5) Colfax 6-0
5. (6) San Lorenzo Valley (Felton) 5-1
6. (7) Cathedral Catholic (San Diego) 5-1
7. (8) Crespi (Encino) 3-3
8. (9) Bear River (Lake of the Pines) 6-0
9. (10) Aragon (San Mateo) 5-1
10. (nr) La Habra 4-2
On the Bubble: Alameda 4-2, Cabrillo (Lompoc) 5-1, Lompoc 5-2, Manteca 5-1, Valley Center 5-1, Weston Ranch (Stockton) 5-1.
Notes & Highlights
This division's rankings were shaken up by previous No. 2 Manteca's loss to Sonora. It's always tough for teams to travel up into the foothills and play at venerable Dunleavy Field and that was the case again for the Buffs, who fell by a 31-28 count. Northwood is ahead of Tesoro in the CIFSS Division IX rankings, so coach Rick Curtis' squad was elevated this week to the No. 2 position. Meanwhile, La Habra, which has lost to previous Div. II ranked South Hills and Div. I ranked Los Alamitos, was chosen to go in for Manteca. The Highlanders have shut out their last two opponents, including 51-0 last week over Buena Park…..
No. 1 Yosemite stretched the Central Section's longest current winning streak to 15 games with a 50-13 blowout of Selma. Drew Marr, Josh Nunes and Aaron Wilkins all scored touchdowns of 73 yards or longer on a punt return, fumble return, and kickoff return, respectively. When the Badgers host Div. IV No. 2 Chowchilla on November 4, the Redskins could be riding a 12-game streak of their own…..

Division IV
1. (1) Oaks Christian (Westlake Village) 5-0
2. (2) Chowchilla 6-0
3. (3) Central Catholic (Modesto) 6-0
4. (4) Escalon 6-0
5. (5) Santa Fe Christian (Solana Beach) 5-1
6. (7) Hilmar 6-0
7. (9) Novato 5-1
8. (8) Immanuel (Reedley) 6-0
9. (10) Justin-Siena (Napa) 6-0
10. (nr) Calaveras ( San Andreas) 6-0
On the Bubble: Big Bear (Big Bear Lake) 6-0, Central Valley (Shasta Lake) 7-0, Corning 6-1, Grace Brethren (Simi Valley) 5-1, Middletown 6-0, Nordhoff (Ojai) 5-1, Pioneer (Woodland) 6-0, Templeton 6-0, Verbum Dei (Los Angeles) 5-2.
Notes & Highlights
Previously unbeaten Nordhoff was the team that dropped from last week's top 10 after the Rangers got beat, 21-7, by Bishop Diego of Santa Barbara. Calaveras of San Andreas, which is actually ranked higher by the Modesto Bee than Hilmar, was tabbed as the newcomer. Last week, the Redskins went up against an Argonaut of Jackson squad that eliminated them in last year's semifinals of the Sac-Joaquin Section Div. IV playoffs but this time it was all Calaveras in a 34-7 win. Calaveras, along with Tulare and Chowchilla, is one of three high schools in the state with the controversial Redskins nickname that is currently unbeaten in football. Note: The state's other two schools that use the Redskins nickname, Colusa and Gustine, are winless at 0-6 and 0-7, respectively…..
Last year, when Escalon and Hilmar met as unbeaten teams midway through the regular season, it was a 26-20 win for Hilmar as the Yellowjackets withstood a furious fourth-quarter rally. This year, the two will meet on Friday in Escalon and again both enter as unbeatens. Last week, Escalon dominated Hughson, 45-7, while Hilmar did the same, by a 41-0 score, against Ripon…..

Division V
1. (1) Central Valley Christian (Visalia) 5-1
2. (3) Ontario Christian 5-1
3. (4) Ferndale 6-0
4. (5) Mariposa 6-0
5. (6) Modesto Christian 6-0
6. (9) Bishop 5-1
7. (8) St. Margaret's (SJ Capistrano) 6-0
8. (nr) Whittier Christian (La Habra) 5-0
9. (2) Campbell Hall (North Hollywood) 5-1
10. (10) Fall River (McArthur) 7-0
On the Bubble: Aquinas (San Bernardino) 5-1, Boron 4-2, Brentwood (Los Angeles) 5-1, Delta (Clarksburg) 6-1, Fowler 5-1, Vasquez (Acton) 6-0.
Notes & Highlights
A top-ranked team in this division went down again last week as previous No. 2 Campbell Hall of North Hollywood lost by 20-19 to Whittier Christian. It may not have been that big of an upset, though, as the Heralds improved to 5-0. When we think of Whittier Christian, we always think of our friend and contributor Leon Davis and we're pretty sure Leon was pretty stoked about that win…..
Due to previous No. 7 Coast Union of Cambria also losing last week, it became possible to keep Campbell Hall in this week's rankings, which we did but put the Vikings behind Whittier Christian. Fowler took the long road trip to Cambria and showed Coast Union just how good the Redcats can be with a 29-7 triumph. Johnny Mendoza and Rafael Simmons both eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark, and senior quarterback Santana Leal put the game out of reach with a 55-yard scoring strike to Trevor Peterson.

God... I wish I lived in California: Land of Great High School Football. Illinois has not really been known for awesome teams. Except for Joliet Catholic. I wonder if the Chicago Public schools would produce caliber players if they were allowed to play outside of their own conference and allowed to participate in the state tournament. Well... at least my alma mater, Moline HS is going to the playoffs with a 7-2 record. Their best record in so many years. They haven't won a playoff game since 1991 though. They have a good shot at making it pretty far though. They just don't have a good QB. Their HB, Justin Hoskins, would be great if he played last year instead of not. But he's put up solid yardage this year. Now what would have been my alma mater if it weren't for me moving is having a record year. 9-0 for the second time this century. They have a solid team all around. Three great halfbacks, a good fullback, a good QB, and a very good defense. I can see them going very far into the playoffs, if not winning the whole shebang this year.

(After games of Saturday, Dec. 2)
(Previous ranking in parentheses)
(Thanks to San Diego Section correspondent Tom Shanahan)
Note that next week's final rankings will be delayed until after the San Diego Section championship games are played on Tuesday at Qualcomm Stadium.

1. (2) Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks) 13-0
We have a new No. 1 team in the state for only the third time in 10 years. Coach Kevin Rooney's team ascends after previous No. 1 Mission Viejo's loss to Hart of Newhall in the CIF Southern Section Div. II semifinals. On the same night the Diablos were losing, Notre Dame moved on to the CIFSS Div. III final with a 28-0 blanking of La Canada St. Francis. It was the program's 35th straight win and Rodney Glass led the way with 156 yards rushing and three TDs. QB Garrett Green added a 13-yard TD pass to Jess Stricklin. The Knights will have to play a big-time opponent in their last game to perhaps seal up State Team of the Year honors, too. It would surprise no one, really, if Dominguez of Compton (12-1, including a win over Long Beach Poly) was able to pull off the upset. Saturday's title game will take place at the Home Depot Center in Carson, where Notre Dame won the same divisional crown in 2003. Mission Viejo, the previous No. 1 team in the state, earned that ranking after the first week of the 2004 season. Prior to that, De La Salle of Concord was No. 1 from the seventh week of the 1995 season until it lost its first game last year to Bellevue, Wash., which ended that school's legendary 151-game win streak.

Rivals.com

St. Bonaventure's main man in the middle on defense is highly-recruited linebacker Dwight Roberson.
2. (3) St. Bonaventure (Ventura) 13-0
If the Seraphs win the CIFSS Div. IV title on Friday night over Moorpark, it will be interesting to see how many of them show up on Saturday at the Home Depot Center in Carson to root for Dominguez to beat Notre Dame in the CIFSS Div. II final. If Notre Dame loses and St. Bonnie wins, we'll state right up front that the Seraphs would then move up and take the No. 1 final ranking. Hart's upset of Mission Viejo also is a big boost for St. Bonaventure since it owns a 33-21 win over the Indians. In last week's 28-7 triumph over Rio Mesa in the semis, Michael Lee scored on runs of 61 and 3 yards to lead the Seraphs. The St. Bonnie defense also did a good job holding down Rio Mesa junior standout Malachi Lewis. St. Bonaventure will take a 23-game win streak into this week's contest.

3. (5) Taft (Woodland Hills) 13-0
The Toreadors move up this week as a result of Mission Viejo's loss that not only drops the Diablos, but De La Salle a spot as well. Taft took care of business with its 42-28 win over undefeated Sylmar in the L.A. City Section semifinals as sophomore Exavier Johnson accounted for seven touchdowns. He completed 14 of 23 passes for 217 yards to his fleet of speedy receivers, led by Jamere Holland with five catches for 80 yards and three touchdowns. The Toreadors could end up with the city section's highest overall ranking in 15 years provided they win the city championship over state-ranked Crenshaw. The Toreadors opened the season with a win over The Shaw, but beating a team they've already beaten during the regular season has derailed a host of potential L.A. City title teams from Taft in recent years.

4. (9) Canyon (Canyon Country) 12-1
The Cowboys make another big jump this week courtesy of their easier-than-expected 42-13 win over Valencia in the CIFSS Div. II semifinals. It was coach Harry Welch's second win over the Vikings this season and the Cowboys were also helped in the rankings by Hart's big win over previous No. 1 Mission Viejo since the Cowboys defeated Hart during the regular season in league play. Many feel Canyon was lucky to win the first meeting since Hart fumbled inside the Canyon 10-yard line with under two minutes left in the game. Regardless, Canyon did pull out the win and runs one of the most balanced offenses in the state with QB Austin Civita and RB J.J. DiLuigi, who has scored 42 touchdowns so far this season. In the win over Valencia, DiLuigi was held to under 100 yards rushing for only the second time this season, but he and the rest of his teammates will be extremely motivated before an expected crowd of over 15,000 in the Div. II final.

5. (4) De La Salle (Concord) 11-2
Mario D'Ambrosio's two interceptions led the Spartan defense in an impressive 14-0 shutout of San Leandro in the North Coast Section Class 4A finals last Saturday in Oakland. De La Salle stretched its state record playoff win streak to 38 games and has now won 14 straight section crowns. The only problem is that the team's earlier 36-26 loss to Mission Viejo now hurts more in the rankings than it did before since the Diablos have now been upset by Hart. De La Salle will now have to finish behind whoever wins between Hart and Canyon in the CIFSS Div. II final.

6. (7) Dominguez (Compton) 12-1
Except for some untimely penalties in some of its wins, Dominguez has been playing extremely well since its early season loss to No. 14 Crenshaw and the Mission Viejo loss didn't affect its ranking as much as the other highly-ranked teams. With their eyes of a matchup with No. 1 Notre Dame in the CIFSS Div. III finals, the Dons overcame a quick 9-0 deficit and knocked off Peninsula of Rolling Hills Estates in the semifinals, 24-15. Coach Willie Donnerson's club held Peninsula to 139 yards of total offense and it will need another sensational defensive effort to knock off the Golden Knights and finish with a top five ranking. Should they falter, Mission Viejo will bump up back in front of them in the final rankings and the Diablos would probably finish in front of De La Salle as well.

7. (13) Hart (Newhall) 11-2
Two weeks ago Hart was sitting in the No. 20 spot and this week the Indians could have easily landed one spot behind Canyon at No. 5. Since Canyon or Hart will drop after this week, however, we decided not to move down De La Salle more than one spot or drop Dominguez at all since those teams won big games as well. Hart will jump up again in the final rankings anyway if they avenge their earlier loss to Canyon. The Indians' only other loss was to No. 2 St. Bonaventure. On a national level, many of our FAB 50 followers felt Hart's 24-12 win over national No. 2 Mission Viejo was a big upset, but on a statewide level the win was not as surprising since the Indians handed Mission Viejo its only other previous loss in the 68 prior games. Much maligned QB Tyler Lyon put together perhaps the best performance of his career, completing 17 of 21 passes for 264 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions in the CIFSS Div. II semifinal win. If Lyon can put together a similar performance this week in the finals against No. 4 Canyon, Hart may very well win its second Div. II title in the last three years.

8. (1) Mission Viejo 12-1
We admit a drop from No. 1 to No. 8 this week for the Diablos is severe, but they just did not finish the season strongly like the teams above have done, including De La Salle, who Mission Viejo beat by 36-26 in week five. In addition to the loss to Hart, Mission Viejo also won by just 7-6 in its regular season finale to San Clemente. That being said, though, all of this program's accomplishments and key wins over the last two years will come more into play for next week's final rankings. It's a guarantee that Mission will move up at least two spots and could be back up to as high as No. 3 or No. 4 depending on what Hart does in its title game vs. Canyon. For this week, anyway, the teams that won last week have to be ahead of the team that lost.

9. (8) Del Oro (Loomis) 13-0
Another school likely to be unhappy this week is Del Oro, which had to go down another spot in the top 10 despite winning the Sac-Joaquin Section Div. II title with an 18-15 win over Rocklin. We had no choice but to bump up both Canyon of Canyon Country and Hart in the aftermath of Hart's upset of Mission Viejo. And we sure weren't going to drop Mission even further than we did. On the positive side, the Golden Eagles will likely go up for the final rankings and we can now say with certainty that there won't be another Sac-Joaquin team in front of them in the final rankings no matter what happens in this week's Div. I championship game.

Rivals.com

Oaks Christian standout junior Jimmy Clausen is looking to lead his team to a second straight unbeaten season.
10. (10) Oaks Christian (Westlake Village) 12-0
It will be funny in a way if St. Bonaventure winds up No. 1 in the state because it's certainly no sure thing that the Seraphs are even the best small school team in Ventura County. The Lions will finish with a top 10 spot in the state rankings provided they close out their season with an expected win over Grace Brethren of Simi Valley in the CIFSS Div. XI finals. Last week, Oaks Christian downed Nordhoff of Ojai for the third consecutive time in the postseason, 35-7. In the win, Marc Tyler rushed for 199 yards and three touchdowns while Jimmy Clausen threw two touchdown passes and finished with 214 yards. Tyler, Clausen and a host of other starters will return for Oaks Christian next season, but deciding not to play against some possible big-name opponents may keep prep football fans from really appreciating this team's talents, unless they are allowed to free-lance and play in a higher division next post-season.

11. (11) Valley Christian (San Jose) 12-1
Palma of Salinas coach Jeff Carmazzi was quoted as saying he thought the Valley Christian squad that beat his team, 35-14, in the Central Coast Section open division final last week was better than the De La Salle team (No. 1 in the state and nation) that his team played in 2003. VC's one-two punch of Dominique Hunsucker and Mike Ginther both rushed for two TDs and the Warrior defense throttled Palma QB Jordan Casas. Valley Christian has now won two straight CCS open division titles and four straight CCS titles overall.

12. (12) Esperanza (Anaheim) 11-2
The Aztecs advanced to the CIFSS Div. I finals courtesy of their 31-21 win over cross-town Servite last week. There's no secret to Esperanza's success as its running game has been dominant in recent weeks. In the win over Servite, Rocky Taloa churned out 191 yards on the ground while Charles Neal scored on a 94-yard touchdown return. Taloa has rushed for over 2,000 yards, Neal well over 1,000 yards and third back Shane Henry is quite a talent as well. This season is shaping up quite similar to the 2003 season where teams from the Southern Section's "lower" divisions will finish with a higher ranking than the Div. I champion. That season, Loyola of Los Angeles won the title en route to a No. 10 final ranking and ironically the unranked and 9-4 Cubs will face the Aztecs in this week's title game.

13. (17) Nevada Union (Grass Valley) 11-1
The Miners move up four spots after their 30-0 win over previous No. 18 Grant of Sacramento in the Sac-Joaquin Section Div. I semifinals. They'll now head back down to Stockton on Saturday for the title game against 11-2 West of Tracy. A year ago, NU lost in a memorable shootout in the final, 50-45, to St. Mary's and its QB, Willie Tuitama. The Miners posted their second shutout of the season against Grant, limiting the Pacers to 83 rushing yards and getting four sacks. After a Grant TD was nullified in the first half, NU scored on a 70-yard run by Jesse Ettin. The Pacers were never in the game again. Since Grant has a win over Valley Christian, if NU wins its title it is probable it would move up ahead of the Warriors for the final rankings. But since NU has a loss to Granite Bay (which lost to Rocklin, the team Del Oro beat twice), moving the Miners in front of Del Oro doesn't work quite so neatly.

14. (15) Crenshaw (Los Angeles) 10-3
The Cougars downed Coliseum League rival Dorsey for the second time this season in the L.A. City Section semifinals last week. In the 20-13 win, Crenshaw trailed early but was able to shut down the Dons' offense once Dorsey All-American Stafon Johnson went down with an injury. The explosive Cougars have not missed a beat in the absence of Tyquan Knox, their best receiver, as John Thompson and safety Darian Hagan Jr. have stepped up in his absence. In the semifinal win over Dorsey, Thompson scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 90-yard kickoff return and the team is extremely confident heading into the final. Not only does the loser of the regular season contest have a history of winning the rematch in the L.A. City Section title game, turnovers contributed to the regular season loss and that is something that can be rectified on Friday night.

15. (16) Torrey Pines (San Diego) 11-1
In the San Diego Secgtion Division I semifinals, Torrey Pines defeated Vista, 24-8. The win advanced the Falcons to the San Diego Division I championship game for a shot at a third straight title. The Falcons won the title in 2003 and were co-champions with Vista in 2004. Torrey's win over Vista was aided by the return of Scooter Belasco, whose season was thought to be finished when he suffered an elbow injury in the season's ninth game a month ago, a narrow win over Poway. But Belasco, the Falcons' playmaker out of the backfield as a runner and receiver, was cleared to resume his duties as a punter in Torrey Pines' win over La Costa Canyon in the quarterfinals and cleared for full-time duty in time for the Falcons' win over Vista in the semifinals. Belasco's rehab work and an expensive protective brace allowed the clearance from his doctor. He scored a touchdown on a 31-yard reception for a 10-0 lead and a 6-yard run for a 24-0 lead. In the title game next Tuesday at Qualcomm Stadium, which also will be the final game of the 2005 prep football season in the state, the Falcons will play 10-2 Carlsbad.

16. (7) San Leandro 12-1
The Pirates came up short in the North Coast Section Class 4A final to De La Salle, but they were closer than three previous unbeaten teams from the school that played the Spartans at the end. San Leandro was behind Monte Vista in the Bay Area rankings all year, but when the two teams met in a showdown of unbeaten teams in the semifinals it was the Pirates who were unstoppable in a 60-42 triumph. Coach Brad Bowers' team stayed within striking distance of the Spartans, trailing by just one score, until there was two minutes left in the game.

17. (19) Norco 12-1
Behind the almost super-human effort of RB Toby Gerhart, Norco advanced to the CIFSS Div. V finals and moved up three spots in this week's rankings courtesy of its 43-36 win over La Sierra of Riverside. In the win, the Cougars' standout back helped his Mr. Football State Player of the Year candidacy in Reggie Bush-like fashion by rushing for 458 yards and pushing his career total near 9,400 yards. Norco will take on 12-1 Temescal Canyon in this week's final and would love to rely less on Toby and hold its opponent well under the 36 points that was given up to La Sierra. Last season's Div. V champion, Centennial of Corona, finished with a No. 4 overall ranking, but neither of the teams left in the postseason in that division have a quality win against an opponent outside their region.

Rivals.com

Anthony McCoy's ability to draw double teams as a wide receiver opens it all up for Bullard's high-scoring offense.
18. (nr) Bullard (Fresno) 10-2
The Knights, and all other schools in the Fresno Unified School District, are usually in the shadows of the Clovis Unified schools. Not this year, though. Although Bullard did lose two early games to Clovis West and Clovis East, over the last six weeks it has been the Knights who have taken off while the other two have been knocked backward by injuries. In fact, Bullard has been so impressive since QB Alex Huerta began flinging the ball all over the place and becoming as dangerous a threat as RB Kenny Hedrington that the Knights may have gotten to this week's Central Section Div. I title game even if Clovis East and Clovis West had been healthy. Last week, Bullard trailed Madera, 25-14, in the first half but went on a roll and ended up crowning the Coyotes, 64-39. Hedrington led the way with 26 carries for 115 yards and five TDs. The Knights will play longtime power Bakersfield (11-2) in this week's championship.

19. (nr) Monte Vista (Danville) 11-1
Some of the Mustang supporters we know were a little ticked with having to drop all the way out of last week's rankings after losing for the first time in a wild 60-42 shootout with San Leandro. Now that Dorsey, Grant and Mira Mesa are gone, though, there's room to push Monte Vista back into the mix. Another plus is that the Mustangs own an impressive win over Sac-Joaquin Section Div. I finalist West of Tracy.

20. (nr) McClymonds (Oakland) 11-1
Mack is back, back into the top 20 that is. The Warriors won the Oakland Section title last Friday with a convincing 49-7 win over Oakland Tech. Willie Griffin carried 30 times for 120 yards and three TDs while Terrence McCoy and Rico Thomas both scored on 70-yard runs. They did lose a 31-0 game to Dorsey of Los Angeles, but that game was in L.A. and Mack never recovered emotionally after seeing standout, big-time college prospect linebacker Josh Tatum go down with a knee injury on the opening kickoff. A more telling example of the Warriors' strength was their 14-8 win in Oakland over Crenshaw, which since then has beaten Dorsey twice.

Notes & Highlights
Notice there are no unbeaten teams in the list above, which means that it literally was a difference of a few plays that decided the final order. Canyon, Nevada Union, Norco and Taft were four teams that came that close to going unbeaten……
Teams we consider Division I for the state rankings are all Division I and some Division II from the San Diego Section, Division I, II and V from the Southern Section, all of the L.A. City Section, Division I from the Central Section, teams from Div. I leagues in the Central Coast Section, Class 4A from the North Coast Section and Division I from the Sac-Joaquin Section.

Sonny Tevaga lined up at tight end for Dominguez and used his 6-5, 345-pound bulk to block for a talented group of ballcarriers.

Notes & Highlights
Oceanside was in the top 10 in this division early in the season, then we sort of forgot about the Pirates after they lost three games in a row. Looking over the course of their entire season, not to mention the program's ability to win big games at the end in recent seasons, was enough to merit a big jump in the final rankings…..
Kevin Mort completed 12 of 15 passes for 177 yards and four TDs as South Hills defeated Orange, 41-16, in the CIFSS Div. VII championship. Mort was aided by running back Marquies Winbush, who rushed for 120 yards and two TDs. The Huskies won their third CIFSS title in the last four years. They only lost by three points in their first game to Esperanza, but a later defeat to Rancho Cucamonga is what turned out to prevent them from a higher ranking…..
Newport Harbor won the CIFSS Div. VI title with a 28-21 triumph over previous No. 8 Valencia. Newport's upset win also prevented early-season standout team Orange Lutheran from going up very far in the final rankings…..
Teams we consider Division II for the state rankings are all Div. II teams and some Div. III teams from the San Diego Section, all Div. III, IV, VI, VII and VIII teams from the Southern Section, all Div. II teams from the Central Section, teams from Div. II leagues in the Central Coast Section, both the San Francisco and Oakland sections, North Coast Section Class 3A East Bay and Class 3A Redwood Empire and Sac-Joaquin Div. II…..

Brawley's Marty Mohamed and his cousin, Mike, had a second straight outstanding season for Brawley.

18. (6) Lompoc 10-4
19. (na) Paradise 11-1
20. (na) Ygnacio Valley (Concord) 10-3
Notes & Highlights
Watch out for St. Augustine in this division next year – as well as contending for a spot in the first CIF Div. II state championship game – as the Saints showed off a number of talented underclassmen in their San Diego Section Div. III title game win over Point Loma. QB Chris Forcier tops that list, but WR/DB Larry Parker, RB Leitch James and most of the linemen will be back, too…..
After avenging one of its losses the week before, Lemoore was even more impressive in blowing out previous No. 4 and one-time No. 1 Yosemite of Oakhurst, 48-16, and as the visiting team, too. All-American WR-DB David Ausberry gets most of the attention for the Tigers, but against Yosemite it was QB Cory Billingsley who accounted for five TDs, rushed for 184 yards and passed for 125 more……
Sonora had six losses to go with its seven wins, which was why we couldn't fit in a team that deserves mention for a regular season win over Manteca and a playoff win over Colfax. Another section champ we couldn't squeeze onto this final list was Half Moon Bay (11-2), the Central Coast Section small schools champion….
Teams we consider Div. III for the state rankings include all Div. III teams and some Div. IV teams (like Valley Center) from the San Diego Section, Div. IX and Div. X teams from the Southern Section, Div. III teams from the Central Section, teams from Div. III leagues in the Central Coast Section, Class 2A East Bay from the North Coast Section, Class 2A Redwood Empire (except Marin County league) from the North Coast Section, Div. I from the Northern Section and Div. III from the Sac-Joaquin.

Escalon tight end Steve Gentry helped his team avenge not one but two losses in the playoffs.
Final & Expanded Division IV
1. (1) Oaks Christian (Westlake Village) 13-0
2. (2) Central Catholic (Modesto) 12-0
3. (4) Immanuel (Reedley) 13-0
4. (5) Escalon 11-2
5. (6) Central Valley (Shasta Lake) 12-0
6. (8) Hilmar 12-1
7. (nr) Novato 11-2
8. (3) Chowchilla 10-3
9. (8) Templeton 11-1
10. (7) Santa Fe Christian (Solana Beach) 10-3
11. (na) Marin Catholic (Kentfield) 9-3
12. (10) Grace Brethren (Simi Valley) 11-3
13. (na) Patterson 8-4
14. (na) Calaveras (San Andreas) 10-1
15. (na) Del Norte (Crescent City) 10-1
16. (na) Salesian (Richmond) 12-1
17. (na) Parker (San Diego) 12-1
18. (na) San Jacinto 9-4
19. (na) Verbum Dei (Los Angeles) 9-3
20. (na) Oak Park (Agoura Hills) 7-4
Notes & Highlights
Chowchilla's surprisingly lopsided loss to Immanuel in the Central Section Div. IV final created room for Novato to jump up to No. 7 for the final rankings in this division. Novato won the North Coast Section Class 2A Redwood Empire title two weeks ago with an upset over Marin Catholic. Most of the Redwood Empire Class 2A teams are Div. III for the state rankings, but a lot of Marin County teams have Div. IV enrollments so we put that league into the Div. IV state rankings mix…….
Nordhoff of Ojai gave Oaks Christian its closest game of the year (35-7), but the Rangers didn't make the final top 20 since they have to go behind Oak Park due to a head-to-head loss. Verbum Dei also was evaluated higher due to a win over larger school Newbury Park……
Teams we consider Div. IV for the state rankings are all Div. IV teams from San Diego other than the ones that are up in Div. III plus some that are Div. V (like Parker), all Div. XI teams from the Southern Section, Div. IV from the Central Section, Div. IV from the Sac-Joaquin Section plus Central Catholic, Div. II from the Northern Section, Class 1A from the North Coast Section (except Ferndale) and Marin County teams from the NCS Class 2A Redwood Empire.

Brad Kostopoulos and the Boron Bobcats just missed a spot in the Div. V final top 10.
Final & Expanded Division V
1. (1) Aquinas (San Bernardino) 13-1
2. (2) Central Valley Christian (Visalia) 10-2
3. (3) Ontario Christian 11-3
4. (4) Rio Hondo Prep (Arcadia) 13-1
5. (5) Ferndale 11-2
6. (6) St. Margaret's (SJ Capistrano) 11-1
7. (7) Modesto Christian 10-2
8. (9) Rio Vista 9-3
9. (10) Modoc (Alturas) 9-2
10. (8) Campbell Hall (North Hollywood) 10-4
11. (na) Whittier Christian (La Habra) 11-1
12. (na) St. Vincent (Petaluma) 10-2
13. (na) Boron 10-3
14. (na) Bishop 9-3
15. (na) Tranquillity 8-5
16. (na) Fowler 9-2
17. (na) Coast Union (Cambria) 9-3
18. (na) South Fork (Miranda) 7-4
19. (na) Mariposa 10-2
20. (na) L.A. Baptist (Sepulveda) 7-4-1
Notes & Highlights
This division had perhaps the least movement for the final rankings as Ontario Christian's close loss to Aquinas in the CIFSS Div. XII playoffs plus what that team did throughout the season was enough to merit a final No. 3 ranking. The only change was to drop Campbell Hall from No. 8 down behind the two Northern Section championship teams. A team Campbell Hall upset in the playoffs, Whittier Christian, was right behind at No. 11.
We were generally impressed throughout the year by the team at Coast Union of Cambria, but the Broncos have to go behind Fowler (the team they lost to in the Central Section playoffs) as well as Tranquillity (the team that beat Fowler) for the final rankings…..
Teams we consider Div. V for the state rankings are all Div. V teams in San Diego (except a few that are up in Div. IV), Div. XII and Div. XIII in the Southern Section, Div. V in the Central Section, Div. V in the Sac-Joaquin (except Central Catholic in Div. IV), Class B for the North Coast Section (plus Ferndale), schools with Div. V enrollments in the Central Coast Section and the other divisions (below I and II) in the Northern Section…
