The Official Tennessee @ Missouri Game Thread, 7:00 PM ET, SEC Network

Great win..my only gripe is how our best shooter imo only takes 3 shots and hits all 3 is now 8 of 11 from 3 looked straight pure from the free throw line..is un unflappable and takes 3 shots all game..hope he dont fall in line with jjj and looks for his shot becuase we will need him too.

Right now Vescovi isn’t able to “create” a lot. He simply isn’t adjusted enough to make things happen. He drives and goes up (without anywhere to go) and gets a turnover.

He is however a really good spot up shooter.....he’s prob, or more simply just a good shooter, therefore (for right now) he simply needs “open looks” to get a pass and a good spot up shot.

Mizzou was all over him early on, and he just couldn’t get an open look (for that type of spot up shot). They clearly saw what he did in the LSU game and was not going to let that happen.

However later in the game (he hadn’t scored a single point) they seemed to get lazy with the D on him and he got open and BAM he made them pay.

I suspect teams will guard him very tightly, and he will not be able to take a ton of “good” shots........but as he becomes more comfortable, look for him to start to create some points on his own.......his numbers (% numbers) may go down but he’ll probably find a way to keep his points up.....once he is able to create his own points.

Great analysis, I agree with everything u said. I definitely believe the Tigers made Vescovi their main concern defensively, early. Like u also said, they kind of 4got about him since he barely had even attempted a shot until he lit them up, late in the 2nd half. Vescovi has trouble creating his own shot right now, seems to really need his feet set and a little more time to get his shot off, but it's deadly. In the off season, if Barnes can teach Vescovi to run off picks and catch and shoot/hit, he will be on the verge of being a star in the SEC, imo.

Yea he will certainly get better and better with time, practice and player growth.

I’ve seen 4 videos on this kid. He can shoot the ball off the dribble, and I think he “can” create points.........but really he has always played a “different” game, and now it’s the “different” game in the NCAA.....in the SEC.

He will find his way.....only been like two weeks or so. But even so.....that spot up shooting he is doing right now is a thing of beauty.

Well put Joallen.but if he ever gets the shot off a dribble down oh my he will be lethal..let's hope.cant wait to see him with our incomeing freshman next year. And pins will be almost unstoppable next year if he progresses again next year from now..I am excited!

U know teams like Kansas and Butler who showed interest are salivating right now..kid has a ton of confidence for a guy out of country and a freshman..can only get better.

Agree. I wonder how much UT being able to take him and allow him to play, almost immediately, helped us get him ?

I’m with you on this.

Just think this year if so many players weren’t missing.....two transferred, one left, one they didn’t get, one isn’t eligible, and one got hurt.

Now with “this” core and the new players, along with Plavsic, and Bailey.....if these guys are just 60% of what we are hoping.......things are looking.....gooooood!

Former 5 star James with a year under him
Fulk with a year of starting under him
Pons.....a rejuvenated Pons
Vescovi.......swish
Bailey...a 6-4 point, who can shoot
Plavsic with a year in the system
A 5 star
Another 5 star
A 4 star....who is the 6th rated power forward

Then you still got Olivier who should be much better, and Gaines....who needed a year anyway (and will have had it by next year), and Pember.....hoping for improvement.

And you still got Johnson......if he has more games like tonight....who knows.

Next year looks solid....if they can all gel together and the new guys play defensively.

I wonder if Barnes will work with Vescovi to speed up his release

I wouldn’t look for that to happen this season.

A couple months ago (I think months....at least it seems) I stated that was prob his worst attribute....even though he may turn the ball over some.

It seems (to me anyway) he has a naturally slow release (or even worse....something coached.....but prob not).....more likely something that hasn’t been corrected as they didn’t see the need (if it was getting the job done).

However here, he isn’t going to be able to “create” a ton with a habitual “slow” release. That won’t stop him on that great spot up shooting (given he has time to shoot).

All that said, “that” ( his release) is something that is going to take time to correct. Once he does though......look out.

I can't remember the last time someone on the team hit 2 3-pointers in a row. That is how bad it is. As long as Jalen Johnson doesn't have to handle the ball too much he is ok. I don't know maybe he'll get some confidence.
Last game... Santi May have done it twice and JJJ May have done it as well.

Yes, agreed, however, I feel this UT team has far more talent, and better coaching. We’ve struggled uncharacteristically this year and it’s frustrating
Our top 5 scorers are gone..................... how can any of us not expect them to be inconsistent at times is beyond me.

Good defensive teams aren’t going to give him very many of “his” shots. Very nice 3 point shooter but he has to have space to get his shot off. Will be very interesting to see his adjustments to the college game this season.

Every one of these guys can't be in the rotation. This new class coming in plus the two transfers will send some mediocre players to a permanent bench seat.

I wouldn’t say Mizzu just got lazy with VS as much as I’d say we finally got some good penetration and ball movement. James deserves a lot of credit for that

VS needs that as he isn’t going to be a guy that creates many shots at all

I'm happy to get a win, but with 21 TOs and half of them from our Vets we most likely won because Tilmon couldn't go. At this stage I'll take every lucky break we get though.

I’d say 1/3 of those TOs were made in the last few seconds of the shot clock. That’s a huge problem right now

Imo the fix is for James to stop passing the ball with 5-7 seconds and take his man to the paint using his size to get a shot and or a foul. That’s the time to be selfish

And then there's JJ handing him the ball with 2 left on the clock.

We beat Missouri in Columbia last year 59 to 55, yep we will see inconsistency.
We did win 69 to 59 this year.
But it's going to be up & down year, Buckle up.
Bumpy ride.
