What do you do if you are trying to get a sign, in a close game with runners on base, the pitcher would be wise to quick pitch and not give the batter time to look down to 3rd

The way I understand it, the batter has to be alert so they can’t quick pitch like that. They have to be alert by the 10 second mark though.
