The Official Western Kentucky @ Tennessee Fall Exhibition Game Thread (Friday 10/25/24) (7PM EST First Horizon Park Nashville)

What’s your thoughts on the pitching rotation?
Just a guess at this point as lots of talent that will work itself out by Feb. With that said, I’d say the leaders in the clubhouse are:

SP: Doyle, Kuhns, Arvidson, or Loy

I know Snead wants to start but IMHO is too valuable out of the bullpen. He’s a stud multiple innings closer with lots of “dog” in him. Lots of talented arms in pen including Phillips, Behnke, Garcia, Wiggins, Hunley, Breedlove, Combs (Ryan), Sharp, Franklin, Sharman, Robertson, etc.

I agree 100%. I think Loy is a mid relief guy with Sneed our closer. Do you see Russell throwing midweek or on weekends?

I think we see AJ Russell ease into mid week games for an inning at a time and once he’s fully healthy, he’s a weekend starter. Unless they determine he needs less strain on his arm, then he will be a stud piece of the bullpen. He’s ridiculously talented as evidenced in TX opening tournament last season.

On an unrelated note, I wish 2025 was one last year of 40 man rosters. 34 is going to be so tough after years of larger rosters. That leaves ~18 for redshirts, grey shirts, strategically placing at JUCOs, or outright portal transfers. The Winter voluntary conditioning program will make or break some of the roster.

You are likely right on, but I bet we will see Backus with the first shot at RF. There’s so much depth and talent that a number of folks could be starting at 1B, LF, and DH. Admittedly, it’s way too early but I’d guess the following opening day lineup (subject to change based on injuries, Winter conditioning, etc.) but I’d go with:
1B. Bargo
2B. Kilen
SS. Curley
3B. Fischer
LF. Chapman
CF. Ensley
RF. Backus
C. Peebles
P. Doyle
DH. Abernathy.

My rationale is CTV will start the season with veteran experience but the lineup will work itself out by SEC play. Abernathy will be tough to keep out of the lineup with his elite speed, hitting, and defense. He doesn’t look or act or play like a true freshman. Abernathy will have opportunities in LF and 2B and Perry will see some time at 1B. 2-way player Brayden Sharp will get opportunities in RF and DH and some relief appearances IMHO.
Do you think Clark has earned a chance to start at DH?

Perhaps but I will obviously defer to the coaches who see him every day, but I will say he’s impressive! Levi Clark hit another HR today in the final at LNS. He can hit the ball for sure but there’s so much competition for any playing time. It’s a great problem to have!

PS. Jay Abernathy made a highlight reel catch in CF today leaping and crashing into the wall. He can absolutely fly and has been hitting and fielding at a high level as well. The young talent is just ridiculous!

Pitching appears to be pretty deep also.
