the open mindness of colleges

Depends entirely on who exactly you're talking about. I'm sure business, economics, engineering, etc majors won't care. Womens studies majors? Of course, common doctrines amongst conservative Christians is antithetical to them and some other parts of collegiate population.

So IOW's those curriculums should not receive public funding since they violate the establishment clause, correct?

FTR, it does seem to matter in those other dept's as well based on the self professed political positions of the professors.

Sorry, I was referring to the student body around the country. Joe's criticized anyone who attends or at one point attended college a few times before.

Yes, bonehead move by this university. Are the majority of other universities that silly? No.
That's fair, but you give the power of tenured hardcore socialists way too little credit.

unless you're at a religious univ the religion of the professors shouldn't make a difference. It's not like they're teaching Islamic math

No. It really shouldn't... but it seems to at publicly funded universities.

I did. I can tell you that tact is not usually considered by liberal arts students when it comes to voicing their opinion. It's important to develop for classes and open, honest discussion or else we'd all be beating around the bush all the time.

Kids will eventually learn their time and place to speak.

So, the op is essentially calling out a bunch of 19 year olds for not knowing when to shut up. How's that news?

Lost art, that has little to do with aging.

Do I? Is it not all a part of how this country works?

Seems almost integral for extremists to occasionally receive an education, find themselves in a seat of influence, and to make themselves as well as their constituents look like utter fools when it's all said and done.

But the vast majority of higher ed faculties are seriously left and a ridiculous proportion are hardcore loony style. At a joint like Columbia, which prides itself on its journalist / lazy idiot program, they aren't eve attempting to pretend that they're objective or open minded about anything. Hell, they have enormous pride in their open-mindedness and brag about it all the time and use their inclusion buzzwords. Heaven forbid someone actually inform them that they're at least as close minded as those they decry.

I can see that. But hey, don't knock journalists...we're not ALL looking to get in the game because we wish to impart our superiority upon readers across the country.

This shouldn't come as a surprise for a college that hosted Ahmadinejad.

I had multiple Professors at OSU give an anti-christian and capitalist agenda to their courses. It happens. All the time.

True story from a child of mine attending that institute of higher learning once referred to as commie hill:
This was from an American literature class studying Huck Finn.

Professor's lecture: "In many parts of Huck Finn, humans are seen acting with a mob mentality; acting like a pack of wild animals.....though I do not mean to denigrate animals."

My child's comment in his email to me: I can assure you, the two wolves in our class were greatly offended by this outdated and unsympathetic stereotyping of their race.

At Cal a lot of the profs just naturally assumed everyone agreed with them politically. i once had laura thyson as a guest professor for a week. unbelievable. it took a lot of willpower to not walk out of every lecture.

Hard to believe that some of the "brilliant" students at a prestigious school like Columbia cannot have a civil and intelligent debate.

Having been in the biz for 20+ years I can tell you that universities are one way PC. Protected groups of any possible ilk (even animals) are extremely protected but the old enemies of the world (corporations, military (only 1st world; western), men (particularly white), etc.) are routinely trashed.

I'm a bit sheltered because I'm in the Biz-school but even there we are subject to the one way PC world.
