The Pembroke Postgame Report.

It is tough to go in memorial and win when it's a big game. I seriously doubt that their fans were in full force vs. Cincy and WKU last year as they were with Kentucky, Tennessee, etc... It's a totally different atmosphere when the students are rowdy.

It was a huge game for this team whether or not it takes an elite team to beat Vandy or not.

A HUGE win for the Vols tonight.

Nothing as good as sticking it to the F'n Dores and that fanbase.

Specially for the middle TN Vol fans.

Why in God's name did Vandy go zone for so long late in the game? It wasn't effective, and it showed every sign of taking the last bit of energy out of a team that looked to be running out of gas.

I think you answered you own question. Plus, no one could guard Hopson one-on-one.

I understand the desire for justice, although, as a Vol fan, I hope Pearl receives mercy instead of justice.

I don't understand the desire to witness someone suffering.
Bruce Pearl certainly had no problem watching Jimmy Collins and Deon Thomas suffer.

Dear Hat,
Could you please answer a question for me? I enjoy reading your post game reports and generally agree with you assessment of the game. However, I do not understand the almost personal vendetta you have towards Bruce Pearl. It seems you go out of your way to see Pearl humilitated, dragged through the streets of Knoxville, and publically exectuted? What gives? Why so much hate from someone with your obvious intelligence. Personally, I like Pearl and what he had done for UT basketball, but I am also saddened and disgusted by his lie and the attempt to cover it up. But even with that I believe he was honest and sincere in his apology, albeit a little late.

Pearl's a phony and a hypocrite. I hate phonies and I detest hypocrites. I hope that answers your question.

Regarding part of point #2 ... "Suck it, Vanderbilt." - I couldn't agree more. Living in Nashville, this point just makes me smile!

You answered the basics of the questions with one accurate statement, the hypocrite one. I know that stems back to his recording the phone call years ago. I do not understand the phony part. He has seemed sincere in his attempts to build UT basketball to a state on national prominence. He has brought a black mark down on everything he has accomplished to date with his lie, but he will be punished I am sure. I just think you have something personal against him. Just my opinion.

Pearl has spent 20 years selling himself as the Last Honest Man In College Basketball. In reality, he's lucky the profession has guys like Scott Drew and Travis Ford in it. Otherwise, he'd be the least honest guy in the business. That's as phony as it gets.

I guess we will have to disagree on his phoniness. Continue you excellent post game reports as they are always looked forward to.

They did a pretty good job of guarding him until they went zone, where he could pick the defender he would like to drive against. His last 6 points came from the foul line after penetrating against the zone.

Exactly. He wasn't even touching the ball when Taylor was guarding him.

Taylor absolutely shut Hopson down in the first half.

In the second half, it was kind of interesting. Since they were playing denial basketball instead of sloughing off, we spread them out and Melvin absolutely abused Tinsley.

(FWIW, teams that extend their man defense on us away from the basket have always been vulnerable to Pearl-coached teams. Smart money has typically been to pack it in against Tennessee, especially since Lofton left.)

They couldn't stop Melvin, so they went zone, and then Hopson could finally catch the ball and go where he wanted with it.

I would almost suggest that teams should consider a box-and-one against us. Slough off the rest of the team, and deny Hopson. OTOH, we're simply not very good at offense, period, so there's probably no need. At the moment, last night remains an aberration.

Scotty finally realizes he can do what we all knew he could do 3 years ago. That is, get to the rim whenever he damn well pleases.

Not sure when the switch was flipped, but his performance at the end of the game indicates a marked change in on-court philosophy. I looooooved seeing him drawing those fouls at the end of the game. I'd take that over a reverse cowgirl scene involving the lovely Marie Luv any ole day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Mr. Hopson: you are in beastmode. Stay in beastmode -- it suits you well.
