These four teams are in the playoffs, win or lose next week, I think:
  • UGa -- 12-0 -- they'll beat LSU, but even if they didn't, they'd still be in the playoffs at 12-1
  • Michigan -- 12-0 -- they'll beat Purdue, but even if they didn't, they'd still be in the playoffs at 12-1
  • TCU -- 12-0 -- this is the most likely of the the three undefeated teams to lose next Saturday; doesn't matter, they're still in at 12-1
  • Ohio State -- 11-1 -- best record of any team not playing for a conference title; so they'll likely get in
On the extremely slim outside chance one of the top three lose in a very ugly fashion, and their star player gets injured (fundamentally changing the team's character the way losing Hendon changed our prospects), USCw (12-1) could fill in, but only if they win the PAC championship.

We're stuck on the outside of all that. There is absolutely no path for us to join that crowd.

But here are some peer competition possibilities for bowl opponents:
  • USCw (12-1 or 11-2)
  • Penn State (10-2)
  • Washington (10-2)
  • Clemson (11-2 or 10-3)
  • Tulane (11-2 if they win their conference CG)
As for where we meet them, it could be the Sugar Bowl, which always gets the "best available" SEC team not in the playoffs.

Yes, I'm saying we're the 2nd best team in the SEC in 2022. There are only three SEC teams that won double digits. And we beat one of the other two.

I know Bama is ranked ahead of us at the moment, but the CFP committee may come to their senses either Tuesday or a week from Tuesday and move us back above them. And even if they don't, the Sugar Bowl committee may choose us as the second-best team in the conference after Bama anyway. We always travel well, and will travel especially well this year, in our first trip to a major bowl in over a decade. Bama's fan base, on the other hand, may be dispirited at their down year and stay home. So yeah, I could see the Sugar Bowl fighting for us.

If not the Sugar Bowl, then likely the Orange Bowl.

Either of those would be awesome, I think. You agree?

The Peach Bowl isn't an option, that's a playoff game, right

I agree, I dont see a Tulane game as a big time matchup, Washington either, I think USCw or Clemson is our best big time game situation, dismantling Clemson could help in recruiting as well, either way it would be a good game and probably the headliner game of the day.

Definitively, we will play in the Orange or Sugar. The perception is that there is an enormous pent up demand to travel among our fanbase, and that will translate to money. Both Orange and Sugar reps have attended our last two games.

The USC Trojans will be in the playoffs.
They'll be Top 4 this Tuesday and win the Pac 12 next Saturday.

I hope we draw a team with struggles at QB.

So....Clemson.

I think its a toss up between USC and Ohio State, I think the committee is so stuck on Ohio State and Alabama they will go out of their way to put those teams in there ahead of comparible teams but we'll see, definitely one or the other.

Sugar bowl will take the highest ranked SEC team that is not in the playoffs which is most likely Alabama.
โ€œHighest rankedโ€ is decided in a room by TV executives, tourist boards and conference. Rank is a myth. There is some integrity in top four. After that, itโ€™s a money fight. Theyโ€™ll give you a believable justification that sounds like โ€œhighest rankโ€, but thatโ€™s not how it works.

If USC beats Utah in that Pac 12 Championship game I think Ohio State is left out. Ohio State is done they have to hope that USC loses that game. They are also looking at TCU and their Big 12 title game. if both teams win Ohio State is left out. They need one of those two teams to lose to get back in.
