The playoffs are not in the cards -- we can get a NY6 bowl, though

Are they locked in to take the highest ranked team? If TN ranked one notch below Bama could they not pick TN?
This is a quote from secsports.com

"The winner of the SEC Championship Game automatically qualifies for a spot in the Sugar Bowl if that team is not selected to participate in the four-team playoff. If the SEC Champion is selected to participate in the four-team playoff it will play in the Peach Bowl or Fiesta Bowl. The next highest-ranked SEC team not in the four-team playoff goes to the Sugar Bowl."

“Highest ranked” is decided in a room by TV executives, tourist boards and conference. Rank is a myth. There is some integrity in top four. After that, it’s a money fight. They’ll give you a believable justification that sounds like “highest rank”, but that’s not how it works.
That's how it used to be.

Still is that way for some of the lesser bowls, but the New Years Six are all slated by the CFP Committee. They decide.

Having said that, I would imagine the bowl reps and conference commissioners get to argue their druthers by phone or video-conference before the Committee decides. So yes, the Sugar Bowl could argue strongly for Tennessee. And if the Vols and Bama are right beside each other in the rankings, it almost doesn't matter which is listed higher. The Committee has freedom to move things around a bit.

But the TV executives, tourist boards, and conference committee getting together in a room and deciding the slate isn't how it happens any more. Not for the NY6.

Go Vols!

Still is that way for the lesser bowls, but the New Years Six are all slated by the CFP Committee. They decide. And they almost always (not always, but like 90% of the time) fill the non-playoff NY6 bowls with teams they themselves ranked #5 to #12.

You’re incorrect. You’re having trouble understanding the distinction between what they say, and what happens. I have a major network sports president in my family, and two sports attorneys as neighbors. Watch how the major media market teams move up— even in the CFP. USC will leap forward and they’ll say “quality wins” because that sounds fair. Largest West coast advertising market does not. You don’t need a lot of overt collusion to understand how the money flows. They hate letting TCU in, but they can’t justify keeping out a zero loss ratings disaster.

Zero chance a 1 loss conference champion in USC (assuming they win) is left out in favor of a 1 loss Ohio state team that just got boat raced in their own stadium. The only question becomes if they would put TCU in if they lost in their conference championship game (I think they would honestly).

There's not a ton of debate about where we'll end up. We either move past Alabama in the CFP rankings and go to the Sugar to play the highest ranked big 12 team not in the playoff, or we go to the Orange Bowl to play the ACC champion. The only thing that could change that is if LSU wins the SEC championship, which would mean that have to play in the Sugar bowl. No real chance of that happening, unless Georgia is somehow way worse than A&M.

Personally I'd rather go to the Orange Bowl to play Clemson then having to play either Texas or Kansas State in the Sugar Bowl.

Orange bowl take the highest ranked out of Big Ten, SEC or Notre Dame. Ohio St will go to the Rose bowl, so that leaves Penn St. Since we are higher ranked, that’s our likely destination.

If USC beats Utah in that Pac 12 Championship game I think Ohio State is left out. Ohio State is done they have to hope that USC loses that game. They are also looking at TCU and their Big 12 title game. if both teams win Ohio State is left out. They need one of those two teams to lose to get back in.
I’m beginning to think TCU is in, either way.

These four teams are in the playoffs, win or lose next week, I think:
  • UGa -- 12-0 -- they'll beat LSU, but even if they didn't, they'd still be in the playoffs at 12-1
  • Michigan -- 12-0 -- they'll beat Purdue, but even if they didn't, they'd still be in the playoffs at 12-1
  • TCU -- 12-0 -- this is the most likely of the the three undefeated teams to lose next Saturday; doesn't matter, they're still in at 12-1
  • Ohio State -- 11-1 -- best record of any team not playing for a conference title; so they'll likely get in
On the extremely slim outside chance one of the top three lose in a very ugly fashion, and their star player gets injured (fundamentally changing the team's character the way losing Hendon changed our prospects), USCw (12-1) could fill in, but only if they win the PAC championship.

We're stuck on the outside of all that. There is absolutely no path for us to join that crowd.

But here are some peer competition possibilities for bowl opponents:
  • USCw (12-1 or 11-2)
  • Penn State (10-2)
  • Washington (10-2)
  • Clemson (11-2 or 10-3)
  • Tulane (11-2 if they win their conference CG)
As for where we meet them, it could be the Sugar Bowl, which always gets the "best available" SEC team not in the playoffs.

Yes, I'm saying we're the 2nd best team in the SEC in 2022. There are only three SEC teams that won double digits. And we beat one of the other two.

I know Bama is ranked ahead of us at the moment, but the CFP committee may come to their senses either Tuesday or a week from Tuesday and move us back above them. And even if they don't, the Sugar Bowl committee may choose us as the second-best team in the conference after Bama anyway. We always travel well, and will travel especially well this year, in our first trip to a major bowl in over a decade. Bama's fan base, on the other hand, may be dispirited at their down year and stay home. So yeah, I could see the Sugar Bowl fighting for us.

If not the Sugar Bowl, then likely the Orange Bowl.

Either of those would be awesome, I think. You agree?

The committee will not leave out one loss USC PAC 12 champion. They beat a ranked UCLA and Notre Dame (ranked #15) team and the Irish were never a threat. I assume they will beat Utah, ranked 15-18, in the conf title. USC also has the heisman front runner, so USC will be in the top four if they beat Utah.

Well Ohio State would've only lost to the number two team in and TCU losing to Kansas State seems to me to put them out. Their loss looks worse than Ohio State to me. I think TCU wins and are in and I think if USC wins they are in also.

For Bama and their fans, it's playoffs /national championship or bust. So wouldn't be too surprised to see the Vols get the Suger Bowl. They can also use strength of schedule and wins to justify it. Late last night during the Washington rivalry, some of the talking heads was already ranking TN in the 6 slot.

Orange Bowl on Friday night against Clemson would be great. I wish we could play Ohio State, but I guess that is not to be.

We obviously don't want to face a team with a great QB. That is the only thing that I would fear for our team.

The Citrus bowl opponent would be a better and more exciting matchup in contrast to the big 12 Suger Bowl opponent (Kansas State?).

I can't see how the committee members could resist offering up a UT Clemson match up in the Orange bowl. CBS is predicting this. I would prefer a night game on December 30th to a nooner on December 31. Either way, I see us destroying anyone unfortunate enough to meet us in the post season.

The way Clemson is imploding, it might be North Carolina.

My guess is that when the CFP rankings come out on Tuesday, Alabama will be ranked above Ohio State

I think Bristol bias and,Alabams week unimpressive win / loss record keeps it from happening this year. The analysts had their hearts set on Ohio State making the playoffs. So Ohio State will probably drop to the #5 spot. The sports media is hoping for an USC upset next week, so they can slip Ohio right back into the #4 slot.

My thinking is that they'll punish OSU for such a blowout loss at home. Alabama lost in the waning seconds, on the road, in both of their losses. Ohio State played a schedule where they were 2 TD+ favorites in every game prior to Michigan. That's the definition of an easy schedule

You're incorrect. You're having trouble understanding how the world works these days.

I am a past President of the United States, am married to the former Queen of Norway, and the SEC Commissioner and CFP Committee Chair are my next-door-neighbors. Believe me.

Go Vols!

Ok sad grandpa. Keep spinning your yarns. I guess I should give you a trophy for typing a full paragraph without saying “lads”.

The USC Trojans will be in the playoffs.
They'll be Top 4 this Tuesday and win the Pac 12 next Saturday.

I hope we draw a team with struggles at QB.

So....Clemson.

So you want to see DJ pass for 600 yards and 7 touchdowns? 😁

Ohio St out for “bad loss” just like us. It was their worst home loss to Michigan since 1976. And TCU has actually played a harder schedule than Michigan. Struggling with 1-11 Northwestern didn’t help.
