So I've got a question.....

Suppose you were in incoming, highly touted, freshman WR coming into fall practice. Its August and you're trying to make a name for yourself with the coaches.

The QB calls a play which will entail for you a 15 yard slant across the middle and the QB winked and said "Be ready".

The DB who tackles you (corner or safety) in question is a sophomore who has made an impact.

Which one(s) of the above would you rather not "lay the lumber" to you?

My choices:
1) Berry
2) Carter
3) Bates
4) Lott

Berry , DUH..That man right there came with intent. Surprised that some warrants weren't issued on some of the smackdowns he put on folks !!!

Now I'm wondering if Herschel would've ran over Berry the way he ran over Bates

Luke Stocker runs them all over consecutively, no questions asked

Nobody runs over our current DBs: they take the wrong angle and never get close enough to get in the way.

it's just what bill is remembered for at tennessee it seems. i don't hate the guy i am glad he was a vol. and thank him for playing us. but what happened to him can be a lesson to all current DB's in the sport.

No doubt Berry delivered The Hand of God many, many times during his time here. Man was a Ball Hawk on top of that. IMO Eric Berry is without a doubt the best DB to ever wear O&W

This what I remember Bates for ...

At the end of 1979 he was honored by being named to the Freshman All-American team. He also won the team's "hardest hitter" award on several occasions throughout his career. He was named second team All-SEC as a junior and senior.

Appears your one of the few that remember him for that single play as the overwhelming majority remember him for his vast contributions over 4 years.

I'd sure hate to have you as a boss or father if this is an example of how you focus on a single failure out of his thousands of successes.

in govols105's defense, my high school coaches told me "folk will mostly remember you for the bad things you did. moreso than all the good things you did".

not saying it or he is right, but that's just how things are

Tell you what....with all this nega-Bates talk.....why don't you bring up how "weak" his father was to Bates Jr. somewhere on the strip - perhaps during his senior year? That should be fun.

i have not seen a bill bates highlight reel from tennessee that i can recall. he did his best when in the nfl. like i said i am glad he is a vol and hope to get to thank him for that one day. but most seem remember the one play he got abused on. it's like ainge i remember him for beating fla, bama and the windmill throw in the endzone against lsu in 05.
