The Power of Defensive Backs

i have not seen a bill bates highlight reel from tennessee that i can recall. he did his best when in the nfl. like i said i am glad he is a vol and hope to get to thank him for that one day. but most seem remember the one play he got abused on. it's like ainge i remember him for beating fla, bama and the windmill throw in the endzone against lsu in 05.

He was a freshman AllAmerican and twice 2nd team all SEC. I remember the cat making plays all over the field and blowing people up in the secondary and on special teams. Guess we just have different memories.

His "getting run over" by Herschel was a minuscule part of what I recall of Bill while at UT....it appears that's all you remember.....you missed a helluva college football player.

So I've got a question.....

Suppose you were in incoming, highly touted, freshman WR coming into fall practice. Its August and you're trying to make a name for yourself with the coaches.

The QB calls a play which will entail for you a 15 yard slant across the middle and the QB winked and said "Be ready".

The DB who tackles you (corner or safety) in question is a sophomore who has made an impact.

Which one(s) of the above would you rather not "lay the lumber" to you?

My choices:
1) Berry
2) Carter
3) Bates
4) Lott

My choices:
1) Berry
2) Berry
3) Berry
4) Berry
* no disrespect to the others, of course. My blood pressure spiked just imagining the hurt he would put on me.

I know....this one has me scratching my head. Don't get it.

These people bashing Bates need to meet some of us at the strip for a little history lesson about Vols that were great before they were born, PUNKS!

You're really confusing us here 105. Nobody's accusing you of hating him. Just don't understand why your only comments about an all-time great Vol are at best insulting, autograph notwithstanding.

As the professional lurker of VN. I have come to learn that 105 seems to have the foot in mouth disease. :)

it's just what bill is remembered for at tennessee it seems. i don't hate the guy i am glad he was a vol. and thank him for playing us. but what happened to him can be a lesson to all current DB's in the sport.

So tell us how exactly you'd lay Herschel Walker out :eek:lol:

poke him in the eyes three stooges style, then strip the ball pick it up and run it in for a TD!!!

or go for his ankles and tie his shoelaces together strip the ball pick it up run it in for a TD.

the bates getting running over comment was some what of a joke for me at least. i just wish it had not happened to him that's all. but mentioning it over and over won't make it go away. it's just i get irritated hearing folks mention it all the time like he did nothing else. this is the same as folks bashing peyton cause he didn't beat florida. no different. i do it to it's just a fact. i was wrong at what i said about him getting run over i admit that. but he might have who knows in todays world.:peace2:

yes i might not completely think before typing on here. but it's a message board. and a long off season to boot. i might be  but i aint dumb nor perfect.

Dale Carter was the best athlete on the field no matter who we played. Shutdown DB and let the nation in KR yardage...consensus first team AA...he was like Deion Sanders in that he would give receivers a step to bait QBs into throwing his way. He was freaking unreal. I don't remember him being a bigger hitter tha EB but in every other facet of his game he was the best in college football, not just UT or the SEC. He went on to be a perennial Pro Bowler in the leagueas well. I'm a huge EB fan but he still hasn't accomplished in his career what DC did when I was a kid. JMO flame on
