1. People will freak out about the second half defense. It was a team that was looking towards the next game. Should that happen? Nope. Is it a valid reason and happens all the time in college basketball? Yup. One half of bad defense means nothing since this team has played great defense throughout the year. The intensity should have been there however.
2. I thought UT's passing was the best it has been all year. They only had six turnovers, and PC put up a couple different defenses. Didn't matter. UT was able to make crisp passes, got the ball around the court, and did a good job filling lanes on offense.
3. Two interesting things about Stokes' free throws. 1) He was quicker. It was three dribbles, then shoot. Usually Jarnell does a spin with the ball, takes three dribbles, and then spins it again. That wasn't there tonight. 2) I thought it was smoother. Not as many moving parts, and the elbow stayed tucked in. 6-6 from the line is great.
4. According to espn.com, PC shot 44.4% from the field. Considering the second half defense, it just goes to show how good UT was in the first half. They were so active.
5. However, one distrubing trend I saw in the second half was lazy closeouts, especially on corner three's. Not sure if UT wanted to force outside shots, but they did not recover well on ball rotation in the second half. Knowing Coach Martin, that will get fix by Friday.
6. The Bernard King Player of the Game: Tough choice between Golden and Stokes, but I'll go with Golden because of this stat: 8/0. That's assists/turnovers tonight for Trae. He's doing such a great job protecting the ball. He went cold late, but took great shots also.
7. Nice game from D'Montre Edwards tonight. 11 points and 5 boards solidifies his spot in the rotation, at least in my mind. When you have a guy that can shoot from the perimeter at the four, the spacing is so much better, and that will only help Jarnell too.
8. Tennessee guards continue to rebound at a high rate. Golden/Richardson/McRae had eighteen rebounds, with eight from McRae, a career high. For a team that relies heavily on defense, having guards rebounding at such a high rate is quite impressive. It also helps when you get those opportunities because of your defense.
9. The team needs Kenny Hall just to help affect shots in the lane. His length and athletic ability helps out players on the three point line because they don't have to worry about the drive so much. Hopefully Kenny gets the hamstring healthy. He doesn't provide much on offense, but they need his length and athletic ability in the paint.
10. There's not a ton you can take from this game, other than they did a great job on offense, and the second half defense was lazy because UT knew they had the win. It's like in football when you get a FCS opponent, and you just run the clock out in the second half because you know you have the victory. UT's D was lazy, and that can't happen anymore, and I highly doubt it will with Coach Martin. Western Carolina comes in Friday and they gave two top 20 teams in Illinois and Georgetown tough games. UT has to come out prepared and ready to play.
Go Vols!!!! :hi:
