The problem of "deep fakes"

This is not about selective editing or speeding up or slowing down real video. This is creating fake videos whole cloth that are nearly impossible to distinguish from real video footage.

So exactly the same thing the media has been doing for decades.

What's your solution. Dumb people are dumb. Heck even not dumb people or dumb sometimes. Always going to be that way. People fall for the really bad photoshops and lies on the internet. It getting ratcheted up a notch isnt a change. If anything it just emphasises that people need to be smarter about what info they consume.

It used to be we got our news from trusted sources. Now we're told we can't trust anyone, except, apparently, our Facebook feed.

Have fun sorting that out.

Really weird to see people who loose their lunch because Google is "manipulating" its auto complete field when you type in a search acting like it's no big deal that artificially-created videos will very soon be almost indistinguishable from the real thing.

Guess we'll need a few fake videos of Trump talking about the fun he had with minor girls for the light bulbs to finally switch on.

Seems like the cure is to have trusted sources. Not to remove/call out new tech

It's good advice but the vast majority of people leave the ability to discern trusted from fake. For example, the number of posts we deleted during the coaching searches that quoted an obviously fake source was mind blowing. I'm not taking about someone claimed their BiL knows a guy, I'm talking Twitter, Facebook, VQ, etc

People will just see what they want

Exactly. Not an issue of tech. But people.

Re-upping this thread.

This is what we have in store. While this one is comical and obviously fake, a lot coming down the pike won't be.

This is why we need something like the Disinformation Governance Board. This will only get worse. Canā€™t just let this kind of stuff float around.

EL must be waiting on some nuggets on DeSantis that Maddow hasn't spilled yet.
