Just to throw out an observation I'm not familiar with Maher enough to speak with any depth on his stances but he's consistently described himself as a "classic liberal". Just saying Left (or Right for that matter) isn't particularly useful by itself. If I said West what would that mean? West of what? Nashville? The Mississippi? The Rockies?

What I've seen of Maher's stance is that he considers himself the type of liberal that once made up a large portion of what was once considered the mainstream Left. He now looks around at the current political climate and sees a paradigm shift in what had constituted mainstream Left into the "progressive" Left. More to the point what would once have been considered "hard" Left or even "Left wing crazy" is way closer to center now. That, IMO, is what Maher is describing.

Just to keep it thread relevant it was not long ago at all when the idea that a person packing penis being be nominated as NCAA Woman of the Year would sound ridiculous but here we are.

You claimed he’s changed. When he first came on the scene politically, the T was almost never mentioned. I state it as pro lgb to show how the conversation on the topic has changed.

Once again, he was pro gay marriage 20 years before Obama was.

Aren't you making the very point being argued here or did I misread the conversation? If what Maher "is" hasn't changed but what it means to be Left has then doesn't that expressly support Maher's contention?

No. “Classic liberalism” primarily refers to a time period three centuries ago, not the 1990s. The parties have changed since 300 years ago, sure, but most of the people who use that term to define themselves now are just right wingers who want to pretend it’s more nuanced. That way they get extra adoration from people like those in this thread for being “a LIBERAL with these opinions”

Even with my doubts about much of your description here let's run with it enough to focus on your use of the word "most". That need not include Maher if one is bothering to investigate. What helps with Maher is he has a long and public record. The vast majority of that time was spent incontrovertibly on what was at the time considered the political Left. To argue otherwise is either disingenuous or uninformed.

You yourself have now cited how parties can change and I agree. So does Maher. A belief system he's held for decades and prevalent on the Left he's arguing now isn't mainstream Left precisely because that description has shifted (as I described earlier) even more "Left". I think you might be making the mistake of assigning a right or wrong to Maher's (or indeed anyone's) stances relative to the political collective at any given time. If person X believes Y and not so much Z and that was mainstream with their political party only to have the mainstream of their party get lax about Y and more supportive of Z what changed?

Nothing about being against the Me Too stuff, or acting like sexuality is a trend, or using the N word when speaking to a senator, has been a "mainstream left position" at any time recently. Even his first show was called Politically Incorrect lol, his whole thing is being edgy for attention and clearly it's working
