Just to throw out an observation I'm not familiar with Maher enough to speak with any depth on his stances but he's consistently described himself as a "classic liberal". Just saying Left (or Right for that matter) isn't particularly useful by itself. If I said West what would that mean? West of what? Nashville? The Mississippi? The Rockies?
What I've seen of Maher's stance is that he considers himself the type of liberal that once made up a large portion of what was once considered the mainstream Left. He now looks around at the current political climate and sees a paradigm shift in what had constituted mainstream Left into the "progressive" Left. More to the point what would once have been considered "hard" Left or even "Left wing crazy" is way closer to center now. That, IMO, is what Maher is describing.
Just to keep it thread relevant it was not long ago at all when the idea that a person packing penis being be nominated as NCAA Woman of the Year would sound ridiculous but here we are.
