The PUSS-10

I don't blame him. A plus-one is step one toward a playoff, which I don't want. I have no interest whatsoever in crowning a "true national champion" because it would ruin the regular season. The thing I love about college football is that every game counts, so teams never, ever have an excuse to take any game off because it could make or break an entire season. You lose that with a playoff.

And don't expect the Pac-10 and Big Ten to let go of the Rose Bowl any time soon.

A playoff, with a max of two teams per conference, would still keep the regular season relevant.

That's asinine. The regular season wouldn't be diminished by a plus one. If you stumble badly, you're not going to be in the running for the title anyway. Let the Big 10 and the Pac 10 do whatever they want. They both play garbage football and are irrelevant.

Why would they be against this? This way the Rose Bowl could have the Big 10 vs Pac 10 champion like it is supposed to be. I can see why it would hurt the Pac 10 because they will not be getting 2 teams close anytime soon, so if USC blows it, they get nothing. And as for the Big 10, well you saw how bowl season went for them.

Unfortunately, this probably won't make it through with these two conferences against it.

I never said a plus-one would ruin the regular season. I said it would be the first step towards D-IA using a playoff, which I am 100% against.

I can't see the BCS surviving without the Big Ten and Pac-10. Say what you will about the football played in the two conferences (they are better than every other conference but the SEC), but if there is a national championship system in place that doesn't involve them, nobody will ever take it seriously. The BCS must have the backing of the five major conferences to implement a plus-one.

I agree it won't happen, but if it did, eventually the Pac 10 and Big 10 would probably give in when they realize no one is paying attention to them.

Also, why would this diminish the Rose Bowl? This way the Big 10 and Pac 10 champion could actually play each other in the Rose Bowl like they were supposed to.

in a short season, every game counts when you're trying to distinguish yourself from the pack, playoff or not

While the guy comes off in the article as a blowhard, I think he does have a point. Based on the system that they are talking about, they do nothing more than push the final BCS standings until after the bowl games, and add an extra bowl game for the national championship. I would think that doesn't really accomplish anything. You still will have the problem of possibly having 3 undefeated teams, or having one undefeated team with 3 or 4 deserving teams that only have one loss. All that does is give an extra game for officials to hope the BCS sorts itself out.

Name any recent season that ended with three undefeated teams.

I was mainly referring to the second part of that sentence. Name how that proposed system relieves any of the complaints of the current system.

Supposed the rule was in place last year. Michigan would have exposed they weren't good enough....

Name a year when the and one would not have alleviated any questions.

People not paying attention to the Big Ten?

Either way, if the Pac-10 and Big Ten pull out of the BCS, what you're left with is a group of people trying to determine a "national" champion without USC, Michigan or Ohio State. Won't work.

Yes it does, and it will continue to be that way in a plus-one. I don't have any problem with the plus-one in and of itself, but I believe that it will eventually lead to something like a sixteen-team playoff. That will allow underachieving teams a shot at a national title.

How long do you think it would be before USC decides they want to be in the title race?

It will never get started that way, but if it did, eventually the conference commissioners would have to give in to everyone else. And has the Big 10 said they would pull out, or that they just didn't like the idea of the +1? I can see why Michigan would hate it, considering they would actually have to win 2 bowl games in a row.
