What do the Big 10 and Pac 10 want to see anyways?
Who knows? It may sound crazy, but I actually like the old system best. The NCAA has no reasonable way of determening a "true" national champion so they shouldn't even try. If it's a four team playoff, people will say it should be 8. If there are 8, people will say there needs to be 16. Do you think a team that finishes 15th in the polls deserves a shot at the title? Or even 7th or 8th team? Many people said after USC lost to UCLA last year that USC lost their shot at the national title. Even after that, USC would still have made it into even a small-size playoff, and likely play Florida for the nat'l championship instead of Ohio State, who went undefeated during the regular season. Doesn't shake out straight to me. The regular season, conference schedule and bowl game is all there should be. You play a big non-conf game or two, you play your conference schedule, if you win, you go to the Rose Bowl or Orange Bowl or whatever.
Is there really even anyone important that's in favor of a playoff, anyway? I know Florida's president changed his tune and is now supporting the BCS. He's the only big proponent of a playoff I've heard lately.
Presidents and AD's would love a playoff. More money. Coaches would hate it.
Milo don't you really wanna say the Big 10 affirms and validates the pac 10? Without Michigan, OSU, and possibly Wisconsin the PAC 10 is as irrelevant as a tired old rose bowl?
Tired old Rose Bowl? It's been one of the major bowl games in this country for almost a century now. As long as USC is a national powerhouse, the absence of the Pac-10 from a national championship system invalidates it completely. I will admit that if USC does go into a decline for whatever reason, the Pac-10 in its current state will have little to no sway. Michigan and Ohio State are consistently great, so the absence of the Big Ten from a national championship system would invalidate it unquestionably.
In short, like I said, as long as USC is playing the way they are, the Pac-10 holds enough clout to put the BCS to ruin if they pull out.
They are a weak conference and they know it. It's a total bluff, but let'um walk away if they want to. I won't miss them. (sorry Droski)
Read above post. As long as USC is bigtime, there is no championship system of any sort without the Pac-10's involvement. It probably sounds sickening to you SEC guys, but you all know damned well that its true.
