The Real Difference Next Season

It's never a good sign whe fans are counting on the strength coach to be the difference.

Give me a Juco QB or something like that.

With 28 seniors leaving, plus juniors leaving early, how much better can we be?

These seniors can't get our fast enough IMO.
I am greatful for them but we need new leadership. Bates and crew are coming! Go Vols!!!

If they're a whole lot worse we're really screwed. This bunch of seniors have accounted for 6 combined SEC wins in 4 seasons. There is still possibility for a 7th come Saturday but i think you get the point..

Hmmmm... I don't think you quite understand how critical a good S&C coach is to the program. :peace2:

Yeah sometimes it is simply good to wipe the slate clean. It is easier to program fundamental great habits and a fighters mentality than deprogram bad habits and a quitters mentality. Much props for all the seniors that have suffered under Dooley's tenure and chose us over other programs...thanks for giving your all!

Now let the rebuilding process begin.

Before we start to rant about how well the vols will do in 2014, we need to keep in mind what players we have to work with. We have to have a min. of 55 SEC caliber players. Breaking down to 22 on offense 22 on defense 11 special players for kickoff and punting ,field goal, etc. So with that in mind can you identify the SEC players on the current squad?

If Butch signs 35...give or take a GS...then you can add THAT number to the plus side...ain't no Dooleyesque dogs in this bunch :)

Poor conditioning leads to poor fundamentals on the field, injuries, mental errors/break downs.....yeah there is a reason fighters work out like mad men....they need to go watch a Rocky movie or something

My point is, and the OP was implicit in his title that he is talking about next year, is that we need better players to make a step forward next year.

A great S & C coach is absolutely needed, but how much effect can he have between now and next season when nearly half the roster is turning over?

Can a strength coach really turn Worley into a better passer and prevent the drops with our receivers?

If they're not cramping up and fatigued...it helps

The proof was on the field this year. I cannot recall (from a drunken game day haze) of many of UT's players walking around with hands on their hips early in the game or at all. Saw a lot of other teams doing it though. (probably cuz their offense scored so fast).

I'll take it another step. There were very few conditioning/fatigue related injuries this year. Look at how many of our opponents were heading to the sideline because of the way we got after it. Our strength and conditioning this year were miles ahead of years past. Just imagine what it would have been like if we actually had depth?

Not too much better...but 6-6 would be a good showing.
One way to look at this ...next year is really the beginning, the 28 seniors leaving is quite a number. So Butch gets to put his stamp on this program with buy in from those that remain, and can shape the young guns coming in.

Finally someone who gets it! If you are not conditioned as an athlete, your body will fail you. You won't be able to give 100% you'll be at 80% and that will be all you can give. Combine that with the workload some of these players were doing and you get what we got. This is one of the reasons that the players looked tired, listless, and could never get back into the last 3 games. Younger players (the EEs) will be able to spend 7-8 months in the S&C program and could put on 20-30 pound of muscle easily, get quicker, get stronger and be more physical. We play in a very physical league and being physically diminished and lacking strength and conditioning aint going to cut it.

28 Seniors leaving, we have been starting true Freshman all season and praying for a win against Kentucky.

Doesn't speak well for our Senior abilities.

Yes, there is an old saying that "fatigue makes cowards of us all."

And then when you're gassed even more lifting, pushing, tackling, and more cardio. They're not going to be Body building training these guys like Dooley did. These guys are going to be trained like Crossfit athletes. There will be lots of 20-50 reps or timed rounds of 10, 15, 20 minutes with power lifting and olympic lifting in their weights followed by shuttles, intervals and more shuttles. They're going to be able to play out and finish games.
