The real reason so many wanted Gruden so badly...

I think the real reason so many wanted Gruden so badly was because getting him was a competition, a race, a game to be won. Everyone wanted him and since our program could not win on the field, many felt that winning the Gruden battle would show that Tennessee is still a winner, still an elite program. To lose him would only verify that mighty UT is that much closer to falling from the ranks of the elite. They put all their eggs in one basket, now where are they?

If they were up your a$$ you would know.

I wanted him because he would be able to recruit like a boss. He would put together an impressive staff. He has a winning record in the NFL and has a superbowl ring.
Barely a winning record, a super bowl ring with Dungys players, fired from last job and definitely not missed by Bucs fan base, poor player/coach relationships that would not work in college, lowered discipline level on team, and a real arrogant arse in person. Never was able to put together a cohesive unit in his own (a coaches primary objective). You would think by some fans untempered obsession with him he was the second coming of Vince Lombardi. Im just glad this chapter is over so we can move on to more credible candidates.

Grudens coaching issue was his constant non satisfaction with schemes and qb play that never allowed for consistency. For those who say I dont know what Im talking about Im friends with one of his former O Lineman.

I wanted him because I think he's a good coach.

I think his name recognition and Super Bowl ring would boost recruiting as well.

I still think Hart is recruting a coach that is coaching this weekend. It seems that hart never met with Gruden and probably never really saw it as a possibility. I am speculating that Hart has been after two people for this position and not Gruden.

So the fans may have put their eggs in one basket, not sure if anyone actually doing the search has.

We're getting either Fisher or Smart. At this point, we need to pray to God it's Fisher, or the program officially dies.

Fisher would be OK. I think Smart will be an excellent coach, but I do not want to lose him in 2-3 years when the Ga. position becomes open.

Maybe so, but ANYTHING JG could do, Tressel can do, and probably better!! I think Hart has to at least consider him with Gruden out, and our program so desperately in need of a HUGE hire... Tressel is a proven winner and needs a huge stage to make his comeback..enter The University Of Tennessee baby.. his sanctions are tiny and his upside is better than Gruden..We need this guy now!!

I think the reason we wanted him was to show the fans the ad was willing to spend theoney it took to fire up the fan base. I wanted gruden as a coach, but really wanted ut to show me that we are willing to spend the money to be elite. I think the utad is alot like the titans franchise. Not willing to spend the big money to keep the fans excited, instead just trying to put the lowest cost product on the field and hope it works. This really pi--es me off and I for one will be very upset with the options I am hearing. I don't care what coach the utad hires as long as it is very expensive. I want to see the ad make an investment in the fans that support them. I am tired of "waiting till next year" an spending my money on a product that shows no fan support nor cares what I think, just jack up the prices and elliminate seats. Burn away!

Thanks JohnBoy! You are the first voice of sanity I have read. These Gruden lovers haven't asked themselves why this greatest of all coaches hasn't previously been snatched up by a Division I school or NFL team.

What makes everyone think Gruden would bring in the best recruits? Has he ever really recruited at the college level, especially in the SEC.

I wanted to get him because all the bammers down here in Huntsville said that there was NO WAY he would come here. I told them that they were wrong. I just wanted to get to rub it in their faces. They win again. What hurts so bad is that Grudens agent flat out said that Gruden at UT was a fantasy.

I wanted him because he is the only coach on any of our lists that has some kind of Tennessee connection, all others may have a reason to bolt at any given moment. Plus I think he would at the minimum win us more than 5 games a year.

This pretty much proves the original point of this thread.

The thing is, all a rival coach would have to do would be to convince a recruit that all of the above is true and any edge in recruiting we think Gruden might have would disappear pretty quickly. If that isn't legal, certainly it would be a discussion in the public domain. Would hearing this make a recruit think twice about following Gruden to UT?

I think most believe he would be able to come in here and recruit a top five class. I think his actual coaching abilities probably are no better than the other leading candidates but getting the players in 3/4 of the battle. You are no longer gonna win the SEC without a top five class of two.

That seems to be the major reason everybody wants him they think he can recruit. His coaching record is not that impressive he did win a Super Bowl in 2002 but also finished 5 and 11 and was fired. I have no clue why he is supposed to be such a great recruiter since he has never recruited a player in his life.

I feel like he would have made more money at UT then anywhere else.. He obviously
Didn't want to be at UT that bad.. Lets also not forgot he was fired from Tampa. If Jon gruden really wanted to be here, he would've made it happen. There was talks of paying him and staff $9 million... Nick saban makes $5.5 with 3 national championships... We honestly don't need him. He might be great on film, maybe a big name for recruits but I think that's it. He will probably be the next John madden.

Also, I'm hearing gruden may be the next eagles coach if he coaches at all... But Andy Reid is currently making $3.5 a year there so gruden won't get much more if not less. We all should realize how much of a jackass gruden really is.

Exactly, as well as instant success. Anyone that does not realize what Gruden would do for this program does not know much about football.

And you actually believe his agent? There was interest on both sides, Gruden as well as UT. Hart didn't do what it took to make it happen. Total Fail on Harts part.
