Not sure if this is a debate you have over here. But i know on TOS, people are always complaining about how TN is so backwards, because the coaches and prospects dont like the in-state school. People say it is a just something that exists, and fell that the prospects are snobs for feeling disrespected. People also say that the reason HS coaches here dont like Tennessee is because we didnt take their fringe prospects. Here was my response, and i thought i would share it.

It really starts with the HS coaches. Here is what happened during the Fulmer era that made it bad.He never went to a HS. People say that coaches had an issue with Fulmer not recruiting their mid-level prospects. But that is not accurate. The issue is not that Fulmer did not take the kids, it is that he never looked at them. Every state school has to turn down prospects, and you dont see HS coaches becoming this upset. What Fulmer would do was literally only go to a school if they had a prospect that everybody was all over. If a school did not have a no-brainer that year, you would not see Fulmer or generally any UT staff member. Then he would show up years later when the school had a big-time player and act like he was going to come in and pick him away. The reaction was, where were you for the last ten years. Literally schools would go 10 years without seeing a Ut assistant, and then they would waltz in and try to land a national recruit. This rubbed a lot of people the wrong way, and i really dont blame them. It made Fulmer look like a user. The idea that if a school does not have a player that is very well known we are not even going to show up, is elitist. Then when they finally have a player you just show up and we may be Tennessee fans, but it is elitist.

Why the hell do you think we found out about Montori Hughes through an opposing coach? If they would have evaluated all the siegel kids, and watched him play, they would have seen what is obvious. What other school finds out about Haynesworth-esque in-state talent through SR all-star games? and it is not like Siegel is a football no-mans land either, you can get kids from there.

Look at what this staff does. They go to High Schools. Even if they dont have a kid that year who is good enough to play here. They go to the High Schools. They shake the hands of the coaches, and who knows, maybe they discover a kid who just got called up from JV who can play. All this Tennessee hate, it did not just appear out of nowhere. It trickles down from the coaches to the players, and they are right. Nobody was asking Fulmer to sign their player. All any of them were asking him to do is come watch, evaluate him and then tell em that he cant play. That is all they really wanted. It is recruiting 101 and he could not do it. Ask Tennstud, he had coaches tell him how weird it was seeing Tennessee apparel watching practice, heck some had never seen it. Dont act like the Tennessee hate is inherent . It is not, there is a reason for it, and it is a pretty good one. This staff knows how to recruit, you wont find a smart person who is one the inside of college football who will tell you they dont. So just look at how differently they are treating this matter. That alone should let you know who was wrong.

All they had to do was watch a practice, and most times they would not. As a prospect i would feel disrespected if i felt they were short changing my HS and my teammates. No coach felt that their kid automatically deserved a schollie because he was from TN, but he does deserve a look. As an in-state school you have the responsibility to go and evaluate in-state kids, we didnt do it. In short, you wanna know why kids and coaches feel disrespected? Because they were...and for many years.

I don't think that we should actually take those "fringe prospects", but I think it would be good to at least go out to the high schools to meet the coaches, blah blah blah, and if you can maybe send the kids film out to some other schools where he would fit, and that'll build relations that are just as good, if not better, than if you take a kid to warm the bench.

Seems like we're doing that now though.

Yeah, these coaches making their rounds to the HSs in the state is good. There is some talent in TN, but ya just have to find it. The last staff really burnt bridges with coaches, we need to rebuild them.

Yep, good writeup. I've said it before and in not so many words, Fulmer got lazy and rode that championship until kids finally forgot we even had one. He should have had a pipeline in TN to backup any miscues nationally. He failed, period. Thought his name alone was good enough to get talent.

There's also tons of kids around the state that just grow up hating Tennessee for whatever reason - and not just a small number - happens here way more than in Bama or Georgia... and this starts before high school too so that's not the answer to it all. For whatever reason it's the "cool" thing to do to cheer against Tennessee in areas outside Knoxville. I can't imagine what it's like in the Nashville and Memphis areas - Chattanooga is bad enough.

It's very bad in Nashville. More people pull for whoever UT is playing that week than for UT.

I'd say in general Nashville is Big Orange Country. Now Brentwood on the other hand is a different story. Its like the melting pot of the SEC. You would not believe how much Auburn, Bama and LSU stuff I see here.

My college roomate was that way...he grew up hating what he considered to be "blind" Tennessee fans (he was from East Tennessee)...he didn't appreciate the program, and didn't like the teams....just one of those things that happens...

I can see your argument and this argument.

The truth to matter is that we aren't going to get every kid from Tennessee to sign, but if we are geniue to the HS Coaches they will be for us ! I grew in Memphis I loved Tennessee cause we were winning and that represented my state, but if you show no love to the kids and HS coaches there won't be any love return back! we have some talent why is bammer coming to our state ,and he said himself we have 5 150 watchlist players they only have 4.: LETS BUILD THE FENCE!!!!!!!!!! salute:

You're absolutely right about that. There are a few more bama fans than i care for around here and you always got the vandy people. Tennessee rules though, period. Hell, they take the majority of vandy's tickets even in their own stadium.

For the record and its been said many a time. Memphis may as well be in another state, a lot of good recruits come out of there and we're not going to get them all. All i want is our fair share.

Depends on the neighborhood you live in, here in East Nashville where I live its the total truth. Inner city kids around here feel as if UT is for the rich kids that go to the various private schools and the bigger schools that are in what they considered the "better" areas of the town.

Metro is not crawling with talent like other big cities (namely Memphis) but there is normally a handful of kids who can play at the D-1 level and a lot of times they simply do not care for UT and never grew up wanting to always play for UT.

Hopefully the new staff will turn this around, starting out with Stone from Maplewood for this coming up class.
A pipeline into Maplewood,Hillsboro, Hunters Lane, and others would be a good thing for the future.

I live in Nashville and there are plenty of Vol fans here. Just visit Commadork stadium and see the Orange Hue! As far as Bammers living in Brentwood, thats an outright lie. A degree from Bammer would't buy you a porto potty in the Wood! HAHAHA! Memphis? I thought we gave them to Arkansas. Memphis is a basketball town and always has been and thats the reason we (UT) have struggled in that hell hole! There are still many Vols fans stuck in that place as well! The deal with Nashville is the Titans have taken some fans away as well as the media attention that used to be directed towards the Vols. GO VOLS!

I said Dance Bammer!

How are you gonna tell me that? You don't even live here. There literally are 2 other families that are pro-UT in my whole neighborhood of 200 houses. Probably half of them are Alabama and Florida fans. Governor's club across the street is even worse.

I lived in Memphis most of my life until I finally got out. The thing about Memphis, I feel, is jealousy. They've sucked for so long and feel Tennessee gets all the money and all the breaks. It's a classic case of the have-nots hating the haves. It (Memphis) is still mostly Tn fans though. Every time they play in Memphis, they sell out the stadium. It's the same at Vandy. I have several Memphis "fans" at work. They have all of the hats shirts etc. Yet the home games only average about 30-35,000. In my opinion, I don't think they like Memphis as much as they hate the success of the Tennessee program.

Part of the problem here is UTK is the top ranked in state university and unfortunately there is not room for all of the student or athletes who seek admission to be accepted. As a result many students seeking admission each year get denied for academic reasons. This form of resentment occurs at many in state university’s around the country. I cannot get admitted to this university so I dislike the school. I agree the new coaching staff has a good opportunity to correct mistakes made by the previous coaches and I know more contact with in state high school coaches will help this situation. It would be a good idea to get all of the high school coaches on a mailing or email list and make sure all of them are receiving information from coach Kiffin and the UT on a weekly basis. This would at least keep all of the in state high school coaches informed about the University and demonstrate UT interest. Hopefully this is already being done.

Lived in Franklin for 7 years, just moved last summer...it was pretty much big orange country...you would get kids that would go out of state because there's money in the franklin/brentwood area, but the UT presence is enormous. I went to Centennial, and a huge portion of us went to UT.

Those people will be hard to find when Bama has its next losing season or even if UT beats Bama this year. I have a nephew who was raised a Vandy fan. Now he is claiming he has always been a Gator fan. Some people are just like that.

Do you live in Southern Woods? I know for a fact the neighborhood across from the Gov Club has plenty of UT fans.

I also love you how know the college allegiances of all 200 houses in your neighborhood.
