Personal observation. Last year teams were afraid of the deep pass and played five or ten yards off the receivers at the line. This actually gave the receivers time to move and actually get open, even for the deep ball. Last year Georgia did not do that, they jammed the receivers at the line. Everyone hits the receivers at the line, and the refs allow it all the way down the field. Look at the Bama game last year. The receivers were wide open many times, not because they were faster than this year's players but because the way Bama defended.

The reason is simple. Last year, Hendon Hooker. This year, Joe Milton.

Its a combination. Different QB, Different go to receivers, dropped passes are abundantly more this year, inaccurate throws ( Hooker had them too ), many many DPI not called. Hard to catch the ball with T-Rex arms.
Something I've noticed though, with the exception of BRU it doesnt seem that our receivers go after the ball and snatch it out of the air. I've always felt the greatest receivers do that. They don't wait till the ball gets to them. You win more challenged catches that way. I still think we have a very dangerous passing game. Drops which end a series, ( catch would be first down) kill this kind of offense. Every game so far has had this happen more than once.

If DPI is not going to get called by the book, maybe the players should take acting classes as their electives from here on out to make it more obscene looking.

When your slowest receiver runs a 4.57 a year ago everyone is open and that was Bru. Tennessee needs speed next year
Tillman wasn't a 4.3 guy so the only speed we really lost was Hyatt. Thornton is faster than Tillman, and Squirrel is pretty fast himself so I'm not seeing the speed drop off if anything they got faster. Its the drops keeping them from big numbers. Thornton has dropped at least 2 TD's and who knows how many yards. Keyton has dropped like 3 TD's and at least 200 yards. U add in the other 15 no DPI calls on the season and they might be on a record pace in the passing game if we're honest.

No singular cause...we have a different QB, different receivers and some different OL blocking to go along with a different OC and of course different rosters for our opponents...we played Florida and Bama on the road vs at home last year...plenty of variables to consider

I have seen Alabama’s QB throw 2 long TD passes, including the one against us. He arcs the ball, and the receivers adjust their routes to run underneath the ball. Joe is so proud of his arm that he throws a low, straight ball. If the receivers even see the ball, they have no opportunity to adjust to it. If we can go 8 - 4 and a Music City Bowl berth with Joe at QB, I think the team will have done all that we can expect.

Better QB and WR’s last year. Probably a better OL too?

Also, another year of tape and an entire offseason for SEC coaches to watch, learn and study it. You also have a good % of opposing SEC players who are playing against it for a second or third time. They have experience and understanding of the tempo and tendencies.

Tilman ran 4.54 at the combine. And besides that, he runs very good routes and was physical. He created separation.

Thornton has had to have dropped half the passes sent to him this year. Just ridiculous. That's 99% of your job as a WR and you can't even do it?

Hooker and 2022 receivers > Milton and 2023 receivers

end of thread
Yeah, last year we had a QB at least in the running for the Heisman most of the season prior to injury and the Biletnikoff winner not to mention another WR drafted. Now we don't even have the most accomplished of what's left with Bru out. Squirrel is actually quite dynamic but he's limited due to stature. We simply don't have the talent we did last year.

Thornton has dropped so much he is on the bench now. The one pass thrown at him against Bama was a straight in hands drop. And he said he was coming here to take over for Hyatt lol. Squirrel is a dog and the best receiver on the field .

Personally, I can't wait till Nico gets up to speed and takes over the reins.
I think our offense is due for a resurgence.

Even Squirrel is an issue, on his deep pass TD...he hardley got any separation from a lber...that is because he ran a poor route instead of sharp cuts he rounded them off allowing a slower guy to stay pace...that is so much more an issue then Joe's occasional Fastball or inaccurate throw
