The reason the passing game is not as good this year

The wide recievers were completely different last year. None of them from last year played Saturday. None of the guys who did play this past Saturday really got open. Keyton was not a super star last year and he was not expected to be one this year. McCoy is not a first round type talent either, and now he's gone. You don't have anything at tight-end. You also lost your best linemen to the NFL. That's a completely different offense. No position got an upgrade in talent from the previous year. Recruiting will be the key to this resurgence. As (most) everyone knows.

Thornton has dropped so much he is on the bench now. The one pass thrown at him against Bama was a straight in hands drop. And he said he was coming here to take over for Hyatt lol. Squirrel is a dog and the best receiver on the field .
He’s been a big disappointment this far. Surely he can be a contributor at some point

Better QB and WR’s last year. Probably a better OL too?

Also, another year of tape and an entire offseason for SEC coaches to watch, learn and study it. You also have a good % of opposing SEC players who are playing against it for a second or third time. They have experience and understanding of the tempo and tendencies.
You are correct. The OL is part of it too. Much better last year

Hooker and 2022 receivers > Milton and 2023 receivers

end of thread

Hooker > Milton, for sure.

With the wide receivers, it’s been a Murphy’s Law thing. Thornton so far has been a bust out of the portal. Which is a big deal. Bru had the devastating injury. Keyton has regressed. Squirrel really wasn’t involved in the game plans until last week (which is mind-boggling, because he’s a baller). You really need Thornton, Webb or Nimrod to step it up in the second half of the season and Keyton to assert himself and take that #1 role.

I have seen Alabama’s QB throw 2 long TD passes, including the one against us. He arcs the ball, and the receivers adjust their routes to run underneath the ball. Joe is so proud of his arm that he throws a low, straight ball. If the receivers even see the ball, they have no opportunity to adjust to it. If we can go 8 - 4 and a Music City Bowl berth with Joe at QB, I think the team will have done all that we can expect.
I think you hit on a big reason for the drops and some misses. I think JM has heard so much of the hype of his " canon arm", and you can see when he's in the pocket , he pulls the ball back before he fires it like a rocket . I've seen other QB/s do this----they just lack the ability to know when to take some off. Hooker was good at putting it where they ran under the ball and keep running in stride.

Tillman wasn't a 4.3 guy so the only speed we really lost was Hyatt. Thornton is faster than Tillman, and Squirrel is pretty fast himself so I'm not seeing the speed drop off if anything they got faster. Its the drops keeping them from big numbers. Thornton has dropped at least 2 TD's and who knows how many yards. Keyton has dropped like 3 TD's and at least 200 yards. U add in the other 15 no DPI calls on the season and they might be on a record pace in the passing game if we're honest.

Boy has hands liken to frying pans

Speed isnt the problem. Its the hot routes and route running. These WRs are not physical enough at the point of attack. We are 7 games in and these WRs are still running the wrong routes and fail to create seperation. PRIME EXAMPLES. 4th down conversion against Texas A&M. Joe rolls right and just runs out of bounds. He had 2 WRs in the same area. 1 of them ran the wrong route. Against Bama, Joe's sack fumble, he was looking at 2 WRs that were in the same Area. Something is not clicking for these young WRs.

Tired of hearing about the receivers! Bru and Keyton were clutch last year. White really came on at the end. So your telling me all 3 went to sh_t. Two main reasons for the piss poor showing this year. New OC and Joe.

Bru was good this year. Keyton has been bad. Watch the games. He has had a lot of drops. Way more than last year. Everybody has talked about Joe disappointing the WRs have been. AP, Hubbs, Hooker, Swain, Fred White and Jonathan Crompton have all said how the WRs haven’t been good. Milton hasn’t been really good either but if the WRs had hands like last year things would look different.

Heupel is calling most of the plays.
