The Reasons Why We Struggle

If you have this many 5 star recruits and you are only 15-10...AND you are blowing 11 pt leads with under 3 mins left in multiple ballgames....AND your future recruiting prospects are dismal....it IS a coaching problem.

If u compare the "star ratings" of LV and UCONN we SHOULD be competitive with a team like that...but we all know LV would lose by at least 40 points to them. It's not like UT is churning out a new HC every year. We've had TWO in like 20 some years. There's no shame in making a move. Continuity is one thing....but losing like this and recruiting falling like it has...this is not the type of continuity you want. The future of the program is at stake.

That happened with the football team but no one wants to fire Butch Jones.

Russell should be playing fewer minutes and Moore should be playing more. Moore hurts us defensively at times--but she is a better offensive player than both Russell and Graves, IMO. Runs the floor well. Truthfully, Warlick should go small and have our team play as fast as possible---play Jackson, play Middleton, play Moore--press full-court, and see what happens. Our coaches and our players are hopeless in a slow tempo, half-court game--pathetic, really--so try a different approach and lean more on our athletes and push tempo. It cannot hurt--and it might help.

It all boils down to poor coaching, plain and simple. No adjustments made during the game. Holly should start Russell, Graves, DeShields, Carter, and Reynolds....and stay with them. If Pat were still able to coach, this same team would only have 2 losses at the most. It is a shame to see what is happening to this once feared program. What it took Pat 30 something years to build, Holly has tore down in 3 short years. If Holly isn't fired by the end of the season, I would be shocked!

AMEN!!! to that. Who knows what Dave Hart is going to do about Holly. I ECHO your thought. She needs to go. It does not mean her loyalty to the program is not appreciated, she is simply not a good head coaching material.

...at least not a good head coaching candidate at an Elite program....a smaller program is still to be determined for her.

Anybody who doesn't recognize that D.DeShields has an attitude issue is not paying attention. She acts EXACTLY like a lot of other kids who've been told how talented they were from an early age and play like spoiled brats. DD had bad body language from her first game of the season--immediate red flag--and has played poorly most of the year. DD is erratic in the way that Simmons was erratic--but Simmons had a great attitude and busted her tail most of the time and was never benched. I think one of the few good things Warlick has done this year is bench DD. Warlick may be the biggest problem with this team, but she's not the only problem. Last year's team played pretty well most of the time, and had a couple of good leaders in Burdick and Harrison, who played hard all the time. They left and were replaced by DD--and suddenly the team's chemistry is a disaster. Coincidence?

If you say that her body language was bad from the start, then to me that means that there was a problem before they even laced them up. Which, to me, is a chemistry thing. Why would she leave UNC and come to UT bitter or spoiled? She had to sit out an entire year and watch and I don't know any player college or pro that wouldn't be chomping at the bit to get after it unless there is something going on off the court and even on it to an extent before the games were even played.

How do we know that Nared is not just as spoiled as DD? After all, her dad played pro ball too, he works for Nike and she grew up near Nike.... Spoiled kids can come from any family. From what I hear,
DD's Mom, A former UT all-American track athlete, is really down to earth and not some uppity, psycho mom like I've heard some of the other mothers are of some of these high profile athletes.

Nope on the bold part. Agree on the rest.

No way should Russell and Graves be on the court at the same time as they have demonstrated repeatedly all season. That is a half court style line-up you proposed which loses game after game against even just reasonably good teams. They cannot play against a zone defense with a double post or against man to man when playing the best teams.

This is a full court, transition style roster. You have one of Russell and Graves subbing for each other. You have Cooper and Nared running with DeShields and Carter. First subs in are Middleton and Dunbar for the threes with Reynolds at point.

Graves had been the only consistent one I would say all season. When they actually feed her the ball. It just seems like all the team focus is to get it inside to Mercedes and Bash role has been relegated to cleaning the boards. Because that's the only way she's able touch the ball that or she has to go outside the three point line.

Bash has been more consistent this year. And she is more willing to stand in there and fight for rebounds or to shoot, which I appreciate.

can come from any family: I would not argue with that. I have played sports, watched sports, been around sports for most of my life: It was obvious from game 1 that DD is a bit of a princess on the court. Mind you, I'm not saying she's a bad person; I'm saying that she plays like someone who's been coddled and told how good she is for too many years--and who doesn't have the work ethic and toughness that you need to really excel AND lead your team.

I'm also not saying she's THE problem with this team--we have many--but I think she's been a significant problem, both because she's not played well and because she does not have a great attitude. She has a very casual playing style, for one thing: Watch how she tends to loaf on defense--standing straight up, jogging around the court, not really getting after it. On offense, I don't have a problem with her effort--but she tries too many unnecessarily flashy passes that become turnovers, and she simply has missed too many shots. I hoped that she would be a leader of this team, but I haven't seen it.

People say, let DD do her thing. That's the problem: She HAS been doing her thing. Warlick is a player's coach in many ways--too soft. DD needs a coach that will get her kitchen and demand that she crank up her effort and enthusiasm levels. Even so, one can't blame bad player performances on coaching. I've complained about the crap coaching at UT longer and more than anybody--but at the end of the day the players must also take responsibility for their performance AND their attitude. And maybe DD has, I don't know. I know this, more enthusiasm and hard work from DD would surely improve her play--and that in turn would improve this basketball team.

I wanted to go back to this thread for a review:

1. Diamond is starting again and playing awesome. She does a lot that does not show up in the box score with her defensive pressure.

2. The shooters seem more confident in the shots they are taken. They also seem to be taking better looks. They are not poor shooters, just look at the ft%. IMO the shooting #s will continue to improve, especially from 3.

3. Jordan Reynolds ... Tooting my own horn... Believe I nailed this one. Too bad she's dinged up now. She's our best pg by far. She gets us better looks by getting us into the offense more quickly, she passes very well, is a scoring threat, and is one of our best all around defenders.

4. Russell's minutes are down and her production has been better when she's in.

Holly, my consulting invoice is in the mail.
