The Rock/Metal Thread

Serious question, those of you on this thread who actually like these harsh sounding cookie monster death/black metal vocals, what exactly do you find appealing about that sound? Did you like it right away or did you have to make yourself acquire a taste for it? Can you actually understand WTF they're saying or do you rely on lyric sheets? The reason I ask is I've tried! I have tried at various times in my life to "get" this kind of metal and I've never been successful. What am I missing? I just find that vocal style irritating at hell and after a few songs I have to turn it off. Musically I think a lot of it sounds badass but the minute the "singer" opens his mouth I tune out and immediately want to wash my ears out with some Judas Priest or Iron Maiden or Sabbath. And its not for a lack of trying. I've tried listening to everything from In Flames to Amon Amarth. From Gojira to Mayhem. From Slayer to Slipknot and several others as well. I've exposed myself to enough of it where I can honestly say it's not from a lack of trying. It kind of frustrates me actually because I've always prided myself on being a musically open minded person and I can usually find stuff I like in all genres of music. However this is the one genre where I have flat out been unsuccessful.

It actually varies for me because I find different qualities. Like Gojira and Slipknot and even Slayer.....I dont' really seem them in that that genre or at least they are milder about it. Slayer maybe not so much but Gojira and Slipknot have some melody in some of their songs. But bands that every song is screaming/growling I'm really not into. Like Lamb of God is a popular one and I've never been able to get into them.

A friend of mine is a huge Amon Amarth fan and I went with him to one of their concerts. Swear to God, I honestly could not tell when one song ended and another one began. Every song had the exact same fast tempo. Every song, the singer sounded exactly the same, belching out undecipherable lyrics at a machine gun pace. There was absolutely no ebb and flow to the show at all. It was like one gear from start to finish. For me, that starts to get irritating after a while. I don't know. I may just have to admit defeat here and accept that I'm never going to understand or get into this style of metal.

Yeah Slipknot has at least evolved some over the years. You can tell that Corey Taylor has allowed his Stone Sour side to spill over into his Slipknot side. But even still, it's that vocal delivery that I cannot deal with beyond a song or two.

The voice is an instrument just like anything else and different vocalists produce the kind of timber (musical term) and vocal intensity I want to hear with it. As a whole the sound is cathartic. Add in words and it has even more meaning and impact. I sometimes have to rely on lyric sheets but that’s not a turnoff, I can’t always understand what people on the radio say either.

It’s such a broad genre though and if you need more singing there’s always power metal, prog, or melodeath.

Lamb of God opened for Metallica back in 2009 and I felt the same way about them. Every song sounded the same to me. I consider myself a fairly decently large metal fan and I just couldn't take it. I went to the lobby at Bridgestone and drank beer until they turned the lights on to set up for Metallica.

Have you ever checked out Amorphis? That’s one band that does actual singing with occasional death metal vocals and does it well.

I'll give them a listen

The closest I've gotten to liking a band with these kinds of vocals is probably the early In Flames stuff, mostly of course for the music. Their album "Clayman" in particular just sounds ferocious as hell. Their guitar tone on that album is one of my absolute favorites. And unlike most other death metal singers, I can actually understand a lot of what he's saying. Too bad they went to **** after that album and never got back to what they once were.

This gets stuck in my head a lot

The closest I can get to it is Acid Bath and High on Fire.
Growling vocals always seemed like a cop out to me. Anyone can hold a mic real close and grunt, just a way around not having any vocal talent. I didn't get into early Clutch for the same reason. Luckily, Neil Fallon evolved his style and made better music later on.
Call me old fashioned but I'll take John Garcia or Dax Riggs over any of that grr waahhh gerrr wahh wahhh stuff.

You’re wrong on the “anyone can do it” part. You may not like that vocal style, but it is indeed a skill.

I like this guy, if you haven't heard anything from him, he's good. "Leo Moracchioli" Frog Leap Studios. Enjoy. I'd post some links but youtube is blocked here at work.

The first song I ever heard from Leo Moracchioli was a Christmas song (It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas), and I thought "OMG he Metal Murdered a Christmas song and that was awesome." So that lead down the rabbit hole and I like most of his remakes.

1987 was such an awesome year for live music...if I could only pick 3 off this list have to be Pink Floyd, The Cure, and Depeche Mode 20210623_184610.png
