The Running Backs

Wright has better top end speed but Small definitely is a load to bring down.

I think it balances it out perfectly.

I love to arm chair QB from my living room leading up every game. I predict what they will do and I predict what we will do ... No, I did not see 44-6 beatdown coming. (I had us at 45.)
However, since we are 8-0 and what the coaches are doing is working to perfection ... I'm going to keep my thoughts and my mouth shut .... winning keeps my 2nd guessing ...more in the area of "I wonder ....."
Predictions:
On offense, Georgia will try to do what every single team has tried to do ... run the ball. AND they will throw to the TEs a lot. They will go for a grind and pound game - keep TN off the field and keep their defense rested!
On defense, Georgia will try to get to Hooker before he puts the ball in the air AND stonewall the run. If they are able(?), they will put a spy on Hooker to keep him in the pocket.
On defense, Tennessee will continue to try to do what they have been doing...make the QBs beat them...by slowing the run and keeping the ball in from of the defenders, begging the QBs to throw....enticing them into an up tempo game (the poison pawn).
On offense, Tennessee will spread the field and take what Georgia gives them ... drop 8 and we run the ball ... otherwise we will exhaust your defense with a hurry up that has defenders guessing who is covering whom.
Outcome .... I see this game looking more like the Alabama game .... TN 48-45 ( I think/hope we come out on top. I hope I am wrong and it looks more like the Ky game.)

Side Notes:
I think our defense is improving due to 2 factors:
  1. We have played a ton of players attempting to keep them fresh
  2. We have played our 2nd (and 3rd) string a lot to facilitate development, foster competition and mentoring, and get them on tape in order to coach them up. (It's working!)
This is the time of the year when playing lots of snaps has started to wear on players ... they are becoming a step slower, nicked up, and injured.
I bleed ORANGE, but I am not a homer (sorry). Check out these two articles .... hope springs eternal.

One of things we need in recruiting is a breakaway back and a power back for short yardage.. Not talking about anybody on this current roster....
That’s the thing with Wright. He’s a breakaway threat speed wise. We are just starting to see his potential.

I love how the coaches rotate these two guys in and out for that one-two type punch.
Also, love how both guys are so football smart that I've seen them swap in and out from one play to the next - like Small is heading off the field as Wright is coming on and the very next snap Wright is headed off and Small is back on...it's been fun to watch.

As much as we all love the go down the field, big play, explosiveness of this offense, it doesn't work without the running game.
Coach Golesh himself has stated "It's not a passing offense, it's a running offense".

I agree with Amsler that Wright gives you another threat. Tennessee will need it this game. I expect Ga to drop 7-8 and trust their DL to control the run game. Ga knows Small is a good back but hes not going 70 yards on you. If Wright holds the ball, he'll get 10-15 carries this week if Ga defends the way I expect them to.

I expect to see Hooker run alittle more this week. Especially in critical situations and red zone opportunities. GA back defense isnt real good and could be burnt all to hell if they chose to gamble.
Nervous about Georgia taking cheap shots at hooker. They are going to try to decapitate him if he doesnt slide in time

I list them as RBa and RBb. Not choosing either over the other. Both have been steady performers this year. Small seems to be running with more lean and aggression and Wright can hit the hole and scamper for extra yardage. Two plays in particular stand out against Kentucky; the first one where it looked like he was going to be tackled but regained his balance and gained about 20 more yards. The second one was when he got hit and the hit spun him around, then he regained his balance and once again had a big gain out of it.

Those were both plays that separate star RBs from good to average RBs. Wright gets more than what is blocked and is a threat to make a big play at any time. Small gets what's blocked and can move the pile forward in short yardage.

Small is an average SEC back, not flashy, but gets the job done.

Wright comes in when the opponents are a little fatigued from our fast attack...His fresh legs pay dividends...Also, the young man has great balance....

They work well together.....
