Maybe we'll see Holcomb and Leach change positions in the lineup next year, with Leach hitting away more from the 2 hole. The thing is, Holcomb hasn't show the propensity to walk as much as Leach does, for whatever reasons--but Holcomb is in many ways an ideal leadoff hitter--as, of course, is Leach.
We really need Seggern, Weimer and Rowland to come on as hitters. I think they all have potential. Seggern faded as the year went on but she's got a good stroke and is likely to be in the 5 or 6 spot. We're desperate for a good middle of the lineup /right hand/ hitter, and I think Weimer has a chance to establish herself as our designated hitter. The only other possibilities are Lockman and McSwain. Lockman is a good catcher, and I have to think will be a regular in the lineup at that position. She improved some this year as a hitter, but is still a considerable distance away from being a dependable/productive hitter. I think McSwain will have to show early that she can make good contact more consistently--and by good contact I don't mean the high popups that her her stock in trade--or she could spend a lot of time on the bench. It appears that Rowland and Bearden will battle for the first base job. With a year under her belt, Rowland can be better next year--needs to be better for us to have a better hitting team. Bearden did some nice things in spot duty this year. Can she do more? Can she drive the ball or hit for power? I don't know--didn't see any power from her this year. She is a big girl and doesn't look fully fit to me. Maybe I'm wrong, but you want someone with her height and build to be as lean and fit as they can possibly be.
Actually, now that I think about it: we maybe have a bit of problem next year. We need someone to play right field. If Weimer were to be the designated player, then that would mean that Vines would play first--meaning neither Rowland, nor Bearden nor incoming freshman Morgan can play first. Not ideal. Maybe Vines can play the outfield. Not sure. Not sure about Weimer out there, either. Maybe incoming freshman Ayala will claim the RF position--but she herself will be adjusting to SEC pitching. We've got a potential log jam at first base and not a lot of potential players for right field. That is what it comes down to. I don't know it for a fact, but I'll bet Ayala and Morgan are left-hand hitters, which means that we've got a very unbalanced lineup. Too many lefties.
