Butch Jones couldn't have been hired at a better time.

Landing top, once in a decade instate talent like Vic Wharton, Todd Kelly, and Jalen Hurd within three months of being hired got the 2014 class off to a huge start.

CBJ is also going to benefit from the weakest SEC East in years in 2014. Georgia loses Murray, USC loses Shaw and Clowney, and UF loses a ton on D and will likely be starting over on O with a new QB and offensive coordinator. Not to mention Bama loses McCarron.

Meanwhile, we'll be vastly improved over 2013, with key upgrades at starting positions (RB, LB, WR, DB) and improved depth.

It's all setting up for CBJ to take a huge step next year and win the East. And if he does, expect to see new head coaches at UGA and USC in 2015.

Like the way you think!

Also, whether it's Worley or one of the freshman, I think we will see vastly improved QB play next year as well. Not knocking Worley, but one would expect either way we will be better at that position.

Richt is not going anywhere soon. Remember the years after Stafford when Joe Cox was their starter? Richt will find his QB and it would take three losig seasons back to back for him to get fired.

I also thought about everything other schools are losing...Murray and Shaw leaving is huge. We will have a shot. Very excited about the new talent coming in this recruiting year and hope Jones continues it.

Even if we don't get it next year, if Jones can continuing recruiting so well, it's just a matter of time.

Who's going to play on the offense and defensive line? even a slight drop off there makes the team worse. Don't know that next year is "the year"

We can talk about being #1 in recruiting, great coaching staff, studs on defense and beast on offense, but as your topic points out, the level of competition has as much to do with winning championships as all of the above. We were amazing in the late 90s and early this decade, but Alabama, Georgia and Florida as well as others were going through some down cycles. Only time will tell, but it seems we will be set up to have some major success.

I'm tempering my expectations for next year. Brand new O line. Losing Neal might hurt a little too. Don't get me wrong, I like Lane but it seems he's got health problems or grade problems just about every year. There are also some questions on D. I'd love to win the East next season buts it's a long ways away and a lot of things need to go in our favor. Let's focus on this year and get to a bowl.

I wish Neal was sticking around also, but we will have Jalen Hurd. :)

I like your positive attitude I really think we contend next year, but a side note....we are losing our entire offensive line with over 150 combined starts and our top run stoppers on D. 2014 is our year...until we beat Florida we shouldnt even have this conversation. We always have to navigate Bama and will probably have LSU a&m OR ole miss on the schedule all teams that are on the rise and getting top talent on the recruiting trail as well. Butch just needs to keep doing what he has been doing and we will be deep enough to contend in 2014+ I think we might be a little to thin for next year development wise.

I truly believe the SEC East in 2014 will be a battle between us and maybe Missouri? Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina are going to be down down down and we'll have the Legacies.

I'm calling BS on this negative BS. Look at the east this year, it is as weak as ever. Now, look at the West. Who is 2cnd best after LSU has been upset and A&M has been upset. Ot looks pretty weak by SEC standards too.

No doubt Bama is a really good team but to say our 90s team could not have dominated the SEC today except for Bama is rediculous. And I'm not saying we wouldn't beat Bama.

In the 90's we always had at least one top 10 team to contend with in the SEC East, Florida. Florida was not down in the 90s. I think they won 2 national championships. Also, we played Arkansas each year which had top ten teams throughout the 90's. In 98, Arkansas may have been the 2cnd best team in the nation. UGA had some good teams too.

I would argue the SEC in the 90s was at least as strong as now.

Good points but remember we will lose our offensive line & our defensive line. So, we will have our own areas to improve upon....

You mentioned several teams but you didn't mention Missouri. They could be the East representative in 2014.

Patients grasshopper. Next year we are legit contenders. Same the year after that. Then comes the SEC Championship and BCS hopes. Worley isn't our guy. He is a building block laying the foundation for "the guy". "The guy" needs one year as a starter to develops. Then we are back to our old winning ways.

Appears CBJ is on the verge of loading up with the top ranked Juco DL and OL prospects. Hard to believe, but they may not experience the huge drop off in line play everyone expects with all the senior departures.

Can't wait.

Look, Worley has shown much progress as a pro-style QB, but, he's still not who Coach Jones wants to run his offensive scheme. I still believe Dobbs, or another dual-threat QB, will be in the future of UT football, with Coach Jones at the helm.:good!:
GO VOLS!

UGA may be healthier, but they wont overcome
Losing Murray to the NFL... I think its a UT/Mizzou and depending
On how many leave UF for the NFL battle... The Grier kid coming
To play qb for the Gators is the real deal...

Definitely like your thinking. Not to mention Z.Metternberger will be gone, No way Manziel returns it will be alot of turnover at the QB position in particular. Wouldn't shock me if we are starting a new QB either but if not we have a serviceable guy in Worley. Just ready to see more explosiveness at the QB spot, especially with all the beasts at WR and highly rated TE's plus Lane and the talented RB's we got coming in, cant wait to see Hurd running over Defense's

Hopefully Tennessee can send Will Muschamp out with a loss to Tennessee in K-ville in what I think will be His last season with the Gators.

I like your optimism, OP. Going into this season, I thought next year would be a bigger setback. However, seeing all the improvements thus far, and knowing our East friends will be losing a lot as well, it could be a big year for us next year. Worley has improved every week. Our WR group is very young and very talented. I think the additions of this class will help patch up the key losses on defense. The East will be wide open.

My picks for SEC West in 2014

1)Alabama(New QB but same 'ole Alabama)
2)Ole Miss(Tremendous wrs,Team on the rise)
3)LSU(Losing Mettenburger will hurt LSU,Defense still good)
4)Auburn(Auburn getting better,Defense has a ways to go)
5)Texas A&M(A&M falls back to earth after Johnny Football goes to the NFL)
6)Mississippi State(Miss State languishes around to a minor Bowl in Dan Mullan's last Season at MSU)
7)Arkansas(UA just doesn't have the talent to compete anytime soon)

TN beats UF, UGA, and USCjr and all three coaches are fired or retire after 2014 leaving the SEC East open for Butch Jones' domination for decades to come!
