The Section 103 Postgame Report

Is there any one on the bench that can shoot the three? If someone could step up and make a shot the whole attitude of this team would change along with everyone else. We have enough athletes on the floor to find a little white kid on the wing or corner to knock down a shot or 2?
Someone who could defend and knock down a occasional
wide open three would be nice. Help on the way next year, not going to help this year though, it is what it is at this point.

That doesn't mean the flex itself is all about aimless movement. Which is what you said.

Well maybe next time I will have to put "our" flex. Because the "flex" we are running right now is full of aimless movement...

All offenses look pathetic when people lazily cut and pretend to screen. We look like we've never v cut on a screen or read the defender and cut according to his reaction.

Call our offense whatever you want. We waste what movement we have. When you give up the ball you should not forfeit yourself as a threat for the rest of the shot clock. We move around without rhyme or reason.

Disagree with number 1. Other than the the first 2 minutes, the last 5 minutes, and when the new football staff got introduced the crowd sat on their butts like usual.

By no means am I a basketball "expert," but my amateur eyes see nothing on the offensive end of the court to suggest even a tourney berth, at this point. Like Hat said, 20-25 seconds of lazy passing and weaving screens at the point, while Tyler and Wayne or Bryan float around like they're waiting for the men's room to open up, followed by either an ill-advised three or an uncoordinated push to the basket. I really just don't see much changing with what we have at guard and the quality of our outside shooting.

I will say that our defense looks much more aggressive, yet again. Of course, that has to be tempered by an acceptance that the last two teams we have faced are not very good with the ball.

I guess Im not an expert either, cause I see the same thing.

I don't think anybody who has watched this version of the Volunteers is going to argue with that. The point I was trying to make is that the problem is with execution of the offense, and not the design. There is a lack of tenacity, a lack of penetration, a lack of crispness, and a lack of physicality in all of our perimeter players.

No offense is going to work as designed if you don't screen and cut and penetrate. The Flex isn't the problem; the way we run it is. We would be having the same discussion no matter what offense Bruce scribbled on the white board.

2. I am thoroughly stunned that Pearl didn't extend the floor defensively and force the pace when Evans went out of the game with his second foul. Failing to do that allowed Memphis to grind the clock and get to halftime essentially even without much production from their best player.
3. The regression of Bobby Maze continues. The idea that Tennessee's point guard play is any better this year than last is rapidly being exposed as a fallacy.
5. I'm amazed that a guy whose father was a pretty good basketball coach has so little feel for the game. JP Prince makes at least two plays a game comparable to those someone who has never played the game before would make.
8. It is imperative that Tennessee sweep the home games next week. Lose one or both of those and a full scale malaise will set in for the team and fan base.
10. Wayne Chism continues to confuse. He wears Memphis out inside, then wanders the perimeter on the biggest possessions of the game.

Correct me if I am wrong, but do not these and BPV's post all point at least in part to our coaching not making game time or practice time corrections?

why you gotta bust my chops?
If you are not being sarcastic (sometimes you hide it well), I didn't intend to do so. Do you not think the play you described reflects a lack of coaching?

This post was made before I read yours.

I was kidding and yes, I believe many of our issues stem from the bench.

I think he's still about where he was. He hasn't shown enough improvement in his perimeter game to boost his stock, but he's continued to do what he does well consistently. I think if he believes he's got a shot at the 1st round, he'll go. This is going to be a very weak draft. If a player is looking to sneak into the first round, this is the year.

Hat where do you see us finishing in the SEC this year? My guess is 3rd possibly 2nd. I don't really see us making it past the 2nd round in the tourney this year either. What would your assessment be based on what we've seen so far?

Likely 2nd or 3rd in the SEC, out in the second round of the NCAAs. If they lose Wednesday, which I don't think they will, they'll finish fourth in the SEC.

Our guard play is just horrible. Maze, Hopson, and Tatum were 2/16 from the field, 0/4 from 3, and 1/4 from the line with with only 4 assists. This will only be magnified during tourney time. Until we get more production from our backcourt (don't even know if that's possible), this team is not going anywhere. Tony Jones said that teams are just packing it in and keeping us from driving and posting up. The next big adjustment is that teams will start doubling down on Chism EVERY time he gets the ball down low. If we can't make people pay for this, we can't win.

that, sir, is right on the money, IMHO.
